Just learned Anime still isn't mainstream in the U.K

American here ive been looking through threads on reddit and it seems the U.K still views anime as a thing for "virgins and nerds" there which surprised me since Manga entertainment a U.K company was the biggest anime distributor in the 90s and anime is incredibly popular in France and Italy is it like this for other nerdy interests down there?

I'm (woman) def not a virgin and nor are the snackly dudes I watch anime with and have sex with, where are they getting this information? :p I mean, has one truly lived if one hasn't watched the wholesome antics of Assassination Classroom prior to bumping it... tbh I thought that was what everybody did? 🤔

Also tbh if there are some anime fans who are virgins that doesn't necessarily reflect negatively on them or the community as a whole, like, people have all sorts of different experiences and priorities in life and that's actually ok :) ❤️ I'm also wondering if "female anime fans don't exist" is a subcategory of this stereotype trope, considering the common gendered assumptions made in online communities about who is and isn't getting laid? 😅

I'm a yankee myself and would like to know where you got that idea from. It seems to me that the term "virgin" is being used to mean somebody who is new to anime-right or wrong?

I could see that misunderstanding occurring if OP's first language isn't English tbf?

I guess you are talking about youngsters. You occasionally see them appear in posts on Reddit /r/AnimeFigures, where they use Tiktok lingo especially 'gooner' if the figure is sexual in nature. People just mass downvote them and move on with their day.

Anime is niche, CR has just 15 million paid users worldwide (well, regions its offered in) however its also a growing niche. This stereotyping from OP is gross. People are people and some of us enjoy anime which is kind of preposterous to lump together anyway because anime is a medium.

Pick two random anime fans from anywhere on the planet and there's a good chance they do not enjoy the same things, heck how many self professed anime lovers don't bother with anime films? Loads!

Polite reminder that marching into a UK anime forum and declaring that everyone is backwards isn't a great way to arrive on the scene. Also, 'virgin' and 'nerd' haven't been functional insults since the 90s.

Anime/manga are more mainstream in mainland Europe, it's true, but it's really exploded in the UK over the last couple of decades. If I read manga outside I'll get people of all ages coming up and chatting to me about it, if I wear a nerdy t-shirt I'll get compliments. A huge amount of adults love Pokemon a lot. We have anime-themed restaurants and gachapon/merchandise shops in big cities. Our cons are so popular that they're overflowing. If I take a bus ride anywhere in the capital I will see at least half a dozen people dressed in nerdy hoodies or with DBZ backpacks or something.

Everyone knows what it is, and the 'anime/manga = sex and violence' stereotype has largely died out around anyone younger than 50 since a ton of big mainstream shounen shows have penetrated the mainstream. Your Redditors are probably out of touch.

Just wanna say sorry if anything I said sounded like a diss on people who are less sexually experienced than me, was just trying to address the topic lightheartedly but yeah really don't wanna virgin-shame anyone or anything :)

Don't feed the troll, people. I'm surprised the admins didn't delete that account after the first post.

Yeah you're prob right. Tbh I posted what I said more for like, anyone else who reads the thread and just might learn something, than for the OP.
