The Nikkei.com website reported on Monday that the Japanese government is working with the private sector to set up a 10 billion yen (about US$110 million) fund to support the spread of Japanese anime, movies, and music abroad. The Innovation Network Corporation of Japan will provide the financing for the new fund, which will be used to secure ways to distribute content overseas.

The goal for the project is to boost the foreign revenue for Japanese content from 1 trillion yen (US$10.69 billion) — the level in 2008 — to 2.5 trillion yen (US$26.73 billion) by 2020. Heading the panel that is drawing up the strategy is Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, along with the Intellectual Property Policy Headquarters. This panel was expected to approve an outline of the plan on Tuesday.

In an initiative to also promote foreign studios shooting films in Japan, the government is also considering instituting tax breaks on costs for domestic production.

Police storms into Mohawk's room and demands, "Where are you hiding all the fern?" :p

Not believing a word of it. Anime's "liquid gold" to Japan, but there wont be such a bit haul to get it out the country.

I've been meaning to, but--damn it all--if you could only see the look it gives me each time I try to get started.

I'll hire an assassin in the morning. It's the kind thing to do.

If they really want to make Anime more popular aboard the first step would be subsidizing certain series to make them more viable to license abroad. Manga Ent really want to license One Piece but Toei simply want too much money. That great example where a subsidy would really help and there's load more of animes which could benefit from Subsidy.

Really? I thought 4Kids still had the license for over here...

They probably only had the TV rights otherwise we would have seen some cheap DVD'S of edited One Piece over here as they did with several DVD releases for Digimon. Even if they did have DVD rights they probably lost them now or be willing to do a fair deal for them now.

Also subsidy idea would not just be for One Piece but other shows as well i.e. Dragon Ball or Gintama as few examples where it could really help.

That's all well and good, but I get the impression most of the benefits will be to US anime/manga market rather than the UK's. I suppose at least import options might improve though. We'll see...

It said to spend 10 billion yen fund to support the spread of Japanese anime, movies, and music abroad. So imagine the money would be spent more widely than just USA. Partly subsidizing One Piece & Dragon Ball UK DVD releases would barely dent 10 billion yen they are planning spending.
