Listen to some of the artists listed here or check out J-Pop forums and see other people's recommendations.

Also alot of the OPs and EDs of anime are by J-pop/rock singers. If theres one you really like find out the singer and go from there. Thats what I did ^.^

I've recently become partial to Asian Kung-Fu Generation, that 'Rewrite' song they used for FMA makes me want to jump around!

My copy of Dir En Grey's Withering to Death arrived last week. It's at the heavy end of the spectrum but if you're bored of the usual faces staring out from the covers of Metal Hammer and Kerrang they're worth a listen. Dead Tree and The Final are my favourites at the moment.
