I'd rather go down the Eva route though, is there anything along those lines available for a reasonable price?
There are both Bandai and Kotobukiya kits available. I haven't built any of the current Bandai kits, but the Kotos look great. I wouldn't recommend the Kotos for beginners as they are double the price of the Bandai kits and the hands are awful to assemble(a common thread with Koto kits).

The Bandai kits are usually between €30-€40, the Koto kits are around €70-€80

The engineers told me it was a technical impossibility to keep adding missile pods to a mobile suit but I made a discovery in the original plans that allowed this by simply telling the engineers to shut up.
