Kick-Heart sounds to me like a very fun project with an unquestionably talented team, but with it's sights set pitifully low.

I think this thread deserves a big bump, with two weeks left on the countdown.

For those who haven't been following the project's progress, it's currently two thirds of the way there. They've added incentives in the forms of stretch goals (if it can raise enough money, they'll extend the running time substantially; it doesn't look as though this will be possible at the moment unless someone convinces a wealthy maniac friend to help out). They're also accepting submissions of fan translations to add more subtitle languages, with French confirmed alongside the English already.

As they've identified that this is a relatively niche short film, they're sweetening the deal for their pool of existing supporters by adding some extra rewards. There are a lot more physical extras available now, from posters to soundtracks to a DVD edition for those strange folks who want to own Kick-Heart in lower resolution. I recommend that everyone who is already a supporter checks out the full new list of rewards - some might tempt you to increase your bid :)

Due to the extra rewards and the fact support seems to be flagging I've bumped my pledge up to $100. Would love to go $250 in for the signed print but I just don't have the cash spare. Come on everybody, you can gett he film for $5 now! Bargain!

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

Decided that I'll give I.G. Productions a Pumphandle Drop, in respect to the D-O-Double G, and the Barret Barrage.
I like how they named the packages too - Wish I could give them the Michinoku Driver, but I cant be fined $10,000 for stealing his move. XD

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

I've just visited their campaign page again, and now they have new targets - 400k for 40mins and 1M for a featured film.
I don't think they can get the 1M, at least not in one go, and I'm still wanting to get the 10k reward.....

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

Scared they might not make it. Certainly don't look like making the stretch goals. Should I up again to $250? I'd try to promote it but I don't know many fans of this stuff, wish ic ould make a bigger difference!

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

While there are no guarantees from what I've seen on the gaming Kickstarters I'd be very surprised if it didn't make it.

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

Yeah, Kickstarter projects tend to get a big boost in pledges near the end. With less than $18,000 or so to go, it'll make it (though the stretch goals are waaay out of reach).

When Chaos reported on a Kickstarter project for an anime named Kick-Heart, a 10 minute anime short which is being helmed by director Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, The Tatami Galaxy) and backed by Production I.G., the forum burst into more life than is usual. Here's what inspired the conversation:

On Sunday, the staff updated the Kickstarter page with a background image and announced a live Q&A session with Masaaki Yuasa who took questions posted in a Reddit thread. Here is a sample:

Hi, I'm Masaaki Yuasa and I'll be here to answer your questions live at Production I.G’s office in Tokyo, Japan from 9 - 10pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on October 21, 2012.

Thehybridfrog: Does the industry in Japan consider the foreign audience important to the success of anime? What about in the future?

Kickheart: I make my animation for the whole world, not necessarily concentrating on the the Japanese market only. I make anime that I think is interesting to me. And I will probably not change that idea.

691175002: How do you think the success of kick-heart will affect the industry? Will crowdfunding become a common way of funding animation? Will anime studios begin to take western fans more seriously as customers? Are other studios/directors interested in, or even aware of kick-heart?

Kickheart: There will probably be more anime creators using this type of crowd funding in the future. And it is a great thing to be able to communicate with the fans directly.

Yuyucow: Hi, thanks for giving us all this chance to ask some stuff. As a fan I really appreciate it. How is it to work with a group of people with very distinct styles? TV anime productions where individuals are allowed to handle single episodes and go crazy with them aren't very common, but that seems to happen in most of your series - especially in the markedly episodic Kaiba. Is there a reason you prefer this way of doing things?

Kickheart: That's how I grew up as an animator and director, so I want everybody to enjoy it like that. Good animation comes from happy environment and if that makes everybody happy, that's all I want.

Kickheart: From Eunyoung-san: It's sooo much fun working with Yuasa-san. I've worked with many people before but I enjoy working with him the most

For more from the Q&A, visit the Reddit page. Of further interest are the new images from the project which Anime News Network revealed yesterday. The project is the first time that an anime studio has raised funds in this manner and despite the nature of the anime, there are some heavy hitters from Production I.G. on board including Mamoru Oshii who is a project consultant and Michio Mihara, an animator who is designing the characters. Other names include Eunyoung Choi who is the colour key artist and Kevin Aymeric who is handling the backgrounds. The project aims to raise US$150,000 by the 31st of October. Why not continue the conversation in this thread.

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

I just locked in and performed a Pumphandle Drop...WHAT A MANEUVER!!

Great to see it hit the fundraising Goal, Looking forward to it.

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick

The 175,000 stretch goal was reached so now Spanish Subs will be included and even more awesomely The feature run time has been extended from 10 to 12 minutes long!

There have been some things added recently, including: Paypal as an extra source for payment and a special "backer" dub if the 200,000 stretch goal is reached where a Backer has the chance to actually be a part of an additional English dub version alongside the Regular dub at their own expense.

Also, two last minute payment rewards have been added which include: a $70 reward which adds a Digital Download Version of the Soundtrack to the previous $60 option and a $2000 reward which enables you to Hang out with the Kick-heart team-- Masaaki Yuasa, Michio Mihara, Eunyoung Choi, and Aymeric Kevin for a live no holds barred DDT Pro-Wrestling Match in Tokyo during the cherry blossom season! (Transportation and accommodations not included).

Really tempted to upgrade to the $70 reward, need to check my funds to see though.

EDIT: A Second Backer has performed a Michinoku Driver, which now means less than $10,000 til next stretch goal!

Re: I.G, Tatami Galaxy's director Yuasa Raise Funds for Kick
