How to avoid being ripped off by dodgy traders at the Expo

As fascinating as the creepiness is...:) it's not really helping not alienate people reading the posts. Please separate the power play from the point you are trying to make, or it will be difficult for anyone to agree with you. I'm going to stop myself if this silliness continues.

I'd be prepared to report dodgy things to Trading Standards too if I went again as I was genuinely very pissed off last time seeing art books I wanted then noting that they were bootleg printings. Ultimately whatever Expo say getting some actual enforcement on the backs of the parties to blame is going to be more effective in the short term. It's a shame the Expo staff don't put more care into doing things themselves but given their lack of organisation, it's not terribly surprising. And there's not much of an alternative for fans in need of some socialising and trade these days, so it's not surprising that people are resisting biting the hand which feeds them even aside from those who just ignore bootlegs (or partake in them).

I suppose the easiest way to make headway would be to get Manga, Beez and the other legit companies on board with a protest; they'll have contacts with the rights holders as well and as exhibitors/sponsors they'll have far more clout with the Expo staff. Will any of the bootleggers be greedy enough to bring along bootlegged items relating to the companies in attendance? I would think it's very likely.

I'm pretty sure we have an idea on who you are, now actually(only IRC users know White-Rabbit), but "who everyone is" is besides the point in this topic, so please keep that outwith the topic.

Just set as a warning, try to keep the attitude down as well please. I've no real problem with this debate/informative topic, but like all of them, try not to just insult or otherwise badmouth people's opinions on the matter.

There must be a term for when someone outside of a clique/group gets jumped on by numerous others because of how easy it is. It's always fun; seeing people act all aggressive because of the weight of numbers. It's like how kids act on the street when they're with friends and see someone they dislike. Herd mentality?... Well, whatever.

As Ayarse said a number of pages back, no-one gives a hot wank about R1 DVDs being sold in the UK. Why should it matter to UK buyers that the BBFC haven't had their cut and put a a fairly random age rating on the spine? As long as the merchandise is officially licensed and in English, no-one cares whether the DVDs are R1 or R2.

Manga don't have to go through the grading process, and import stores such as Amazon and TBD have always stocked books only available officially in the US. I'm sure it's still technically against the law to sell goods licensed for sale only in America in other English-speaking countries, but there you go - it happens. And no-one cares because, aside from the spines being a little different, the content is the same.

If I were to remove myself from my basement and attend one of these expos - ruining the dreams of my fangirls by doing so - the only thing I'd care about is the bastards selling chink goods, burned DVDs; clear fakes. Those are bad, no matter how you look at it, and you're a complete ******* idiot if you can still smile - knowing you have a soundtrack or whatever that's worth pennies because its an imitation of the real product.

Bootleg DVDs have horrible quality because of 26 episode fansubs being squashed into like three discs. And the subtitles are Chinglish. Only the ignorant would be pleased with such 'quality'. That said, it's best to read-up before attending such events if region 0 DVDs are sold frequently so as to not get stung.

This thread isn't really needed because a person without common sense has to learn the hard way. An idiot evolves through suffering; not advice. If someone has their knickers in a twist over the sale of R1 DVDs in the UK being technically wrong, then let the person be upset - there's no need to show your electronic manliness to each other. Grow a pair of virtual balls and walk away instead of A backing himself into a defensive position and B-Z trying to pick A off.

Nevermind what I said previously about it being wrong to gangbang - this quote proves Mango is in fact CitizenGeek:

PS. I had a good laugh at the poor attempts at flamebait trolling earlier in the thread. Try harder guys, you might win that internet argument that you are having only with yourselves. ;)

Note the ****ish smirking-winker smiley usage.

I can see the resemblance to the person I assume your referring the typical sarcastic typing/writing styles to.

Nice to see your back out from under a rock somewhere,

There's that, yeah... and how the OP isolated himself from the entire forum and refused to back down, no matter what. Very few individuals lack e-social skills to such an extent AND piss people off so easily - me being one of the few, elsewhere. (That time where I convinced a nasty forum that I was some kind of child rapist who's brutal to animals and hates women/may be a serial killer was pretty bad, man...)

If he ever expresses his undying love for Advent Children, Evangelion and the latest FF offering, he's Irish - 100%. My 'nose' is never wrong, as my 'Roy' insight has proven previously.

1. Please don't sour things with personal witch hunts Aion; I don't want to ban you so soon after you've returned to us.

2. Wasn't the trademark smiley which drove you mad more of a ;] anyway?

1: I thought we'd already established I can't be banned?... well, whatever: I'm not giving you Casshern Sins now. Or Shana. Or Melody of Oblivion. Or any of the other wonderful titles I have the pleasure of owning.

2: You're right; my memory wasn't. My desire to interact with CG while I'm still here got in the way. I've got Maes... but he just isn't CG.

 And why do i think of 4chan when the above "list" is ever mentioned?

As CG has disapeared from the forums, probably dwelling in a dark hole somewhere. will your return be short lived or are you considering a proper return? This place has been quiet.

No induendo's in there at all....

I must say I'm finding this thread most entertaining. Though in defence of Captain Justice, he was just listing "advice" I don't see why you all jumped on him just because you disagreed. He seemed pretty blasé about whether anyone followed it or not.

All of you seemed to get more worked up attacking him than he did, so I'd say that's pretty competent trolling if nothing else. He didn't even put any fake outrage into it.

I guess what I'm basically saying is everyone needs to chill =P

edit: I am not saying that you should listen to him, I just think you all overreacted.

That was arguable for a while, but he's outed himself as a 100% definite tool with the bizarre B-movie villain act surrounding "who he really is".

Fair enough. But people seemed to have fun guessing =P Everyone loves to play detective once in a while

In my vast experience, people who use 'tool' as an insult are douches, in American terms. And my experience with you suggests that statement is 100% correct.

People pick-off easy, isolated targets to empower themselves. That's true in any 'community'. If a person can get away with throwing around insults at someone without suffering in return, that person will do so. This thread is an example of that.

The OP was stubbourn and showed little in the way of social graces by not conceding any ground, but it was others who acted immature by insulting him.

I am quite shocked by the calm, measured profundity of this statement. You're a hard man to pin down Aion I must say =P
