Hollywood Studio wanted to axe Ryuk from Death Note?

i not watch all death note but my personally and i think it is right Hollywood studio decide should axed Ryuk because he is too weird and useless. He just help to light how to use death note.

The problem is he's also a catalyst for some of the other events in the story. Whilst he doesn't always play a big part, he IS a constant presence, one which to some extend affects Light's perceptions with time; not to mention his final act at the end of the story.

Even if he didn't physically appear, he'd need to be heard at least once or twice.

To put it into perspective, removing Ryuk would be like making a film about the Chernobyl disaster...but then taking out the Chernobyl disaster itself and replacing it with something less controversial, whilst keeping everything else the same.
And again, I'm not even that much of a fan of Deathnote, I though the first half was FAR superior to the second half, although the show does make an interesting look at human psychology and how perceptions of justice can be warped when combined with too much power over time as perspective becomes skewed.

Light's new background was apparently going to be vengeance for a friend murdered while he was young. So instead of him using the notebook to seek justice, he uses it for revenge? Luckily he opposed it.
Isn't justice just taking revenge on behalf of someone else?

I suppose it is in a way... in terms of Light's justice anyway. True justice should be balanced and fair, not just about punishing a wrong.

If the director is Shane Black of Lethal Weapon and the brilliant Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang fame then this could be good.

Agreed and he says he's a fan too (I mean all directors do but considering this guy is a proven comics fan I'm inclined to believe him)

If he wasn't a fan, I'm sure he wouldn't have gone out of his way to go against the decisions of the company who will be signing his pay cheque.

Aye, as someone who enjoyed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I'm vaguely optimistic for the movie, considering some of the changes he's turned down.
That said, I've seen enough bad 'based on...' movies to be sceptical until I start seeing it.

The recent Beck and Kimi ni Todoke movies (albeit it made in Japan) were actually quite good though, so we shall see.

Mmm, that's a good start. I'm a little concerned he might get pulled off to do Iron Man 3 if it doesn't go into production soon though...
