Hetalia: The Axis Powers

Will-O'-The-Wisp

Cardcaptor
I keep meaning to make a thread about it but end up getting distracted half way through! It's 1:25 am so I will most likely update it with more info later on after I've actually slept. :D

It's basically a comedy take on World wars 1 and 2 were countries are represented by individual characters. The episodes are usually about the characters "fighting" each other, arguing, grab-assing etc while playing out their countries typical steretypes i.e England, being sharp-tongued, well mannered, but a terrible cook... As it's set during the 2 world wars, real life historical events are sometimes shown in a much more mock "not to be taken seriously" sort of light. It was originally an online webcomic, so the episodes are about 5 minutes long each to keep with the style and there are about 56 episodes in all.

The Characters: (There are over 40 so I'm just going to target the main nations)

The Axis Powers:

Italy - The main protagonist of the series, despite Italy being directly descended from the Legendary Roman Embire, he's a bit of a coward and likes to keep white flags at the ready while his two comrades Germany and Japan lead their way into battle. Loves Pasta, Pizza and various other Italian food.

Germany - The leader of the Axis Powers, Germany's serious, hard working and takes it upon himself to frequently train Japan and Italy in the art of war. Quite a Tsundere, being slowly taken in by Italy's air-head personality while acting as his mentor and occasionally saving him from capture by America. He's sometimes spoken down to by Austria who often plays the piano to him to "show his anger" when something doesn't go according to plan

Japan - Similar to Germany, Japan's hardworking and is usually very serious. Throughout the series, he's often prone to culture shock and is uncomfortable with the Western world's customs like absolutely refusing to take his clothes off during one heat wave while criticising Italy and Germany's lack of shame. Has the generic black haired, dark eyes trait common among Japanese people. He also has a soft spot for Rice balls with sake

Allied Forces:

America - America's a Fast-talking and headstrong character, often placing himself as the leader of the Allies and often using the line "I'm the Hero!". He has a strong fear of ghosts and grey aliens for some reason and was brought up as a child by England untill he eventually takes his own independance. During meeting's between the allies, he's the character who usually comes up with the absurd plans while eating hamburgers and drinking slushies

England - The Tsundere of the Allies and an ex-pirate, he's well mannered, polite (just as long as the person he's talking to isn't America) and takes it upon himself to correct other people's mistakes with basic terminology. Has a strong rivalry with France despite being Allies and is known for his terrible cooking skills and his "ability" to see imaginery friends. He has also mentioned his big brothers Scotland and Wales a few times during the series.

France - France is very romantic and carefree, with a passion for his cooking. He often goes through a long lists of defeats against other countries believing them to be jokes from God. Probably the most popular character used in dodgy pairings as he often hints at sexual passings towards characters, England in perticular. His most distinguishing features are his shoulder length hair, Fluorescence appearence and wine glass usually used to cover downstairs when he's walking around naked. He occasionally shows disdain for Spain when ever his name is mentioned

China - Probably the oldest of all the nations despite his youthful look, China's often called immortal. China discovered Japan when he was just a child deep in a forest and took him under his wing teaching him calligraphy but raging when ever Japan tries to convert it to Hiragana. He's a huge fan of Chinese trends such as Hello Kitty and often ends his sentences with "aru", a Japanese stereotype of how Chinese people speak. He has a strong distrust for Russia relfecting the "Sino-Soviet split".

Russia - Usually quiet, friendly and docile, Russia is a Yandere character, meaning he can often turns violent and frightens the other characters at a moments notice, especially Lithuania and Estonia. Like all Russians do, he enjoys Vodka and the winter, but is mentally scarred due to his bloody past. Russia also has siblings, Ukraine his older sister and Belarus his younger sister. He's identified by his large duffel coat and thick scarf which hides a large portion of his face

I'm up to episode 22 and I've surprised myself by loving this as it's not my usualy preferred genre, but I'm glad I tried it and I'm more than willing to expand my wings a bit more with other series! Anyone herd/seen/planning on watching this? Let me know your thoughts :D

True, true. I just can't get behind the idea of watching such an overtly "for girls" series. Even though I'm watching, er, Hakuouki and UraBoku atm. >_>
