Anime Limited
Hi everyone! Seeing as it's Friday & you all have been so very nice to us with all the lovely comments after our announcement of Gurren Lagann earlier in the week, we thought we'd give you some more.

With your copy of TTGL on blu-ray, you will now get the 2 TTGL movies AND the parellel works! That's right - we're throwing in all those extras with the set! These will be split between the 2 blu-ray sets. How & what will be where, we're still waiting on licensor approval. But rest assured, you'll be getting all the goodies with your blu-ray copy of Gurren Lagann! AND it won't be $500 ;)

Happy Friday everyone!
I want to have Andrew's babies.
The Japanese set is gorgeous, but £400? pushing it. Especially when KnK is coming out for £220.

That's a really nice incentive for me to double dip. I already have Parallel Works but I don't have the movies :D

Any chance the Gurren Lagann movies will be available separately? GL is a rare example of show that I think would benefit from having most of its runtime excised. There are some great moments but I almost fell asleep during most episodes...

Yeah or on the dvd release too? Maybe....please.
If they authored two sub only DVDs for the movies do you think people would actually buy them? I doubt it, especially when the movies are just compilations of the TV series. Being sub only wouldn't help it sales wise either. Either way it's about damn time we started getting some BD exclusive content anyway. Maybe that will 'encourage' more people to finally bloody well buy Blurays. They should do things the Kaze way when it comes to extras, except the other way round - any extras should be BD exclusive.

That makes sense. I'm all for sub only releases of things which wouldn't be viable to dub, and I hope the UK market keeps getting sub only releases.

Likewise - if a show is good then I'll go for that at least on DVD if I think dub is possible later down the line. It all hinges on how soon down the line a dub may come, Sentai for example are very efficient in dubbing quickly so it'd be stupid to release sooner and miss access to that.

How viable is it for a 26 episode show to make back $26,000? (obviously there's other costs as well, like distribution, BBFC etc) Considering most people don't even pay RRP for a set, I'd think it's probably quite difficult, no?

Well for starters that 26,000 is an advance on saying we think we'll sell XXXX copies at £59.99 a set for example and we'll pay you 20% of whatever we sell of that at the price it is sold to retailers at.

So the answer is it can be difficult - if you call the value of the property in advance you will at best break even, worst lose money vs what you said it would make. So if you're sensible and don't bid above your weight then it's all OK...so you can imagine that it can and does go wrong.

While we're asking Andrew stuff...:D

You mentioned lucrative simulcast platforms; I know that Funi in particular is very keen on developing this side of their business in the US. Are there any plans for getting the classic TV shows Anime Limited has been grabbing onto some streaming services to squeeze some more revenue out of them (even though, I presume, using a third party service to host episodes reduces the financial gains), or is that something that's a way off yet?

I'd personally really like it if I could point my less hardcore fan friends towards legal streaming to check out unfamiliar shows instead of lending them my discs, and in that respect something like Crunchyroll (best for me) or Netflix (seems popular) would be best since there's already a mobile infrastructure in place. Heck, I'm so lazy that I sometimes check episodes I already own on Crunchyroll to clarify some plot point rather than digging out the physical discs.

I have some irons in the literal fire on this front - you'll hear from me on it in due course I am pretty sure! My belief is for a workable simulcast system you need to control the whole chain of a property - from digital -> packaged to give people the best kind of value as a part of the package.

You'll hear from me more over the next few months - but definitely there should be a legitimate way to consume our digital content at an affordable rate and to show things to friends without rooting for a disc. Never hurts the market to have more people see it legally then know where / when they can get the physical version if they like it :).

I know some of you have commented on the majority of Anime Limited's titles being re-releases as opposed to new content and I really do support Andrew's comments on such, but just to break it down - every license so far is bringing something new to the table. Andrew, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or misinformed about some of the details, but isn't the release slate looking something like this?:
TV Series':
Cowboy Bebop - First time on blu-ray
Gurren Lagann - First time on blu-ray, plus all of those snazzy extras announced today.
Outlaw Star - Second time on DVD, albeit the first DVD release being too soon before Beez's demise (so availability was scarce). Has remastered video.

Movies:
009 RE:Cyborg - New title.
A Letter To Momo - New title.
Perfect Blue - Long out of print, on blu-ray for the first time.
The Place Promised In Our Early Days - Long out of print, on blu-ray for the first time.
Tiger & Bunny: The Beginning - New title.
Travelling Daru - New title.
Voices of a Distant Star - Long out of print, on blu-ray for the first time.

Yes, the majority of currently announced licenses aren't entirely new properties, but at 6 out of 10, it isn't a significant majority. Also, each and every license is bringing something new to the table - be it blu-ray or remastered video.

Personally, out of those, the only one I own is Cowboy Bebop on DVD and well...I was first in line on the Friday of London Comic Con for the Shinichiro Watanabe signing (and for the first 45 minutes, I was the entire line). So yeah, I'm getting that when it comes out. So I'll need to find a new job and then another job on top of that it seems, as I'm interested in all of these titles.

I 100% respect what Andrew has said in regards to the financing and such. I'm also amazed that so many licenses have been obtained when not a single one has been released yet! Focusing on AAA properties when starting up is an obvious logical outcome. In the future, I do hope to see licenses such as Bunny Drop and Wandering Son, but I do respect that they are very niche shows.

Oh yeah, fun fact Andrew - I'm not sure if you remember, but at Comic Con I mentioned that my brother named his band after Outlaw Star (I forgot to mention their name, but it's "Chasing Melfina"). They recently scored a record deal and their first single is due out exactly 5 weeks after Outlaw Star is being rereleased.

I remember Anime Limited's goal at the beginning was to be "The Criterion Collection of anime". I think that both the currently announced titles and the treatment they are being given shows that they are making excellent progress towards that goal. Giving a mixture of classic titles and contemporary titles first class releases on home media, but making them very accessible price-wise to help them reach an audience. I am completely behind what they are trying to do and hope that it's successful!

I think thats terrible and blu rays normally have more features then dvds anyway. Also these aren't extras technically, they're entire movies, a big chuck of Gurren Lagann story, standalone or otherwise. You shouldn't use this kind of content to force someone into buying the blu ray version. People with only dvd players are now going to miss out. People should be able to upgrade when they feel ready and decide they want the better audio/video, not because they feel they have to to get the movies.

I don't think it's fair to say "Upgrade or Miss out". All fans are equal. Are you saying people with Blu ray players are bigger fans and thus deserve to be rewarded as such?

Andrew, please consider putting the movies and Parallel Works on the dvd release too.

You can still buy the old movie DVDs from the US for a reasonable fee. I don't think it's unfair to add an incentive to the BD set; it's not the first time it's happened even when UK anime releases, and some titles are completely BD-only.

Obsolescence is just one of those inevitable facts of life and DVD's time is fast approaching. Presumably you don't think they should also be released on Laserdisc, VHS, Betamax and 16mm film?

BD players and discs are now no more expensive than DVD was at the same point in it's product life cycle. BD only seems expensive in comparison to DVD, which is now so cheap I have to wonder how any money is made from DVD disc and player sales at all.

I'm sold on the GL sets now, for sure. I'm in the same position as Rui re: what bits I own and don't own, so I'm looking forward to being able to pick up the movies in the same package.

if you're super impatient you can pay $6,000 - 8,000 easily / EP to dub it yourself. Which would be another $156,000 off the bat for a 26 ep series, something you can't hope to make back from the UK and profit.
You could ask for volunteers to dub it in their spare time. I quite like the idea of an AUKN dub cast...
I am in.

Is it because Yoko became too old for your tastes?
