Ghost in the Shell - Lots of action and atmosphere

The Boss
Laeta Kalogridis, scriptwriter for the Ghost in the Shell adaptation spoke about the upcoming Dreamworks / Steven Spielberg project Ghot in the Shell.
"..the script for Ghost In The Shell will be drawn from Masamune's manga comic and that it has "a lot of action… lots of action." However, she then added, "there's still going to be a lot of atmosphere – [The movie] is about vast possibilities - all of this technology, the Internet – it's about the limitless possibilities of this technology."
Q: Is that a remake of the 1995 film or is that an adaptation of the earlier manga?
"LK: "Ghost in the Shell" was originally the manga. The anime came from the original graphic novel and then - and that anime, as you know, is a relatively famous, groundbreaking piece of material - also generated two seasons of an animated television show as well. And this is an adaptation of the original manga, the original comic book that sort of began everything."

I still haven't read the manga ("Twelve-f*ckin'-ninety-nine? Piss off!") but I think... this is a good thing. A live action, Americanised version of Oshii's masterpiece would have been a horrific thing to behold.

You should have a look at ebay some time, i got mine from there for £5, really good condition as well

Still a bit weary of what they are going to do to this, its a masterwork but the amercians will probably ditch the mind stuff and focus on action leaving us with something like that surrogates movie.

Did I mentioned it's Spielberg?

Anyway, sorry I should be more clear with what I mean there.
I'm sure it will look amazing, it will have breath-taking action scenes, BUT any attempt to add depth will be removed so it can have a 12yo age rating =(

I'm curious about the cast though.

The Dark Horse editions are cheaper than that, at least on Amazon. But unfortunately, and unforgivably, both they and the new Kodansha versions have been edited to remove girl/girl nookie.

Are you sure about that? mine looks to be the newest one and its fully uncut, with the full colour spreads of the *ahem* girl action.

You're right, sorry. The 2005 Dark Horse reprint is unedited but the 2009 Kodansha release is the same as the first Dark Horse edition, which was edited, so steer clear of that one.

Hmm, I should probably make an on-topic post.

...

Eh, I got nothing. Meh?

Did I mentioned that Steven Spielberg is signing it?
Was this sarcasm? Because even though he's the genius who gave us such masterpieces as Jaws, Close Encounters and Jurassic Park he also provided us with gems such as Transformers, Twister and Indy 4.

So, yeah? Is is a good thing? Is it already greenlit?

To be fair he was only the producer on Transformers, Michael Bay holds more of the blame for its failings (although i thought it was an enjoyable movie, purely a popcorn flick, given its source)

I've got a bad vibe about this, which makes me feel like it's another AI. Has all the reasons to be amazing, but ultimately fails.

I, for one, shall welcome the on-screen depictions of Major Molly Cassington and her Basset Hound-owning assistant, Bertie.
Together they endeavour to uphold freedom and honour their flag, whilst being supported by the best technology the FBI can provide.

Methinks my powers of subtlety are waning.

Now I don't mean to pick holes, but Molly and Bertie sound far more British than they do American Zin5ki (especially if the Basset Hound is named Fred).

Also, I want more of this story.

5er on eBay bro.

I actually have some faith in Spielberg to do a decent job of Ghost. Minority Report showed that he can handle decent, cerebral sci-fi, and juggle it well with some good action scenes.

My biggest concern is just that... well, Ghost is pretty much its own entity now. Having a live action movie, I think it's only ever going to be 'that live action movie they made out of Ghost In The Shell.'

Casting it is going to be a nightmare. To me, the characters are pretty much nailed in the Stand Alone Complex anime. I just wonder where they can go with it from there.

With all due respect for LK, but he, or she's a bit confused with his/her facts about this. Though the original movie was designed from the manga, it was a completely alternate story and plot, basically Oshii's own version of the franchise. It was the TV series that ran true to the manga.

I reckon that's forgiveable. If you look at either the original Mamoru Oshii film or Stand Alone Complex, both reference the manga in different ways.

There's certain scenes in the movie that are pretty much lifted from the manga, and the overall plot is very similar - it hits a lot of the same beats. The series picks up a few things and uses them as motifs, but I wouldn't say it bore a great resemblance to the manga.

And that's a good thing, right? We'd quickly get tired if every incarnation of Ghost if it was retreading the same plot all the time. From that angle, it'll be interesting to see what Hollywood does.

Just, in the name of all that's holy, don't give us another Innocence...

I myself was more than satisfied with Innocence.
Indeed, a plot in which the Major does not play a dominant role would be best suited to this adaptation project. (Personally, I would consider it to be a means of damage limitation.)

Innocence was just fine as a sequel for the original movie, but regardless what Spelberg decides on, I'm not going to be happy with the inevitable Americanisation of the whole story.
