Getting Started on Manga

Voddas

Symphogear
I've only read bits of odd manga in my time and that was a long time ago too. Been wanting to get into it for some time but don't think my wallet could have handled it.
Basicly, I've thought sod it! If I run out of money it's my own fault. I really want to read some manga!
Bottom line is, you wise readers of Manga!! Can you help me and point me in the direction of my very first manga? My Manga virginity is now inn your hands..... ^___^

EDIT: (wow, I said manga a hell of alot!) :?

Well I have read quite a lot of manga and here are the ones I will recommend : Naruto,Bleach,Negima,XXXHOLIC,Tsubasa Resevoir chronicles and one piece

Am rather new to manga myself so maybe the series I have been reading and enjoyed could be of help. ‘Death Note’ was a really great read and very addictive, also enjoy reading ‘FullMetal Alchemist’ and ‘Mushishi’.

Hmm.. is there one particular outstanding one you can think of. What would be the first to come to mind? I want to be blown away like.
8)

I started by readin Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, both of which I recommendm other great mangas would have to be Genshiken and Air Gear

Where's the best place to get your Manga. Looked on the net but there isn't too many spots that really stand out. Prices seem to level out about £5.00. Is that about right? Any suggestions are welcome.

The prices are about right, i've seen cheaper but that's more down to luck (£4.99 for all three .Hack//Legend of Twilight manga in the works of all places). I normally pay £5.00 per manga thanks to forbidden planet's 3 for £15

I usually get mine online from United Publications. But I have bought stuff from Waterstones and Borders because of bargains.

Depends on how long a series you'd like. Mainstream manga (Shonen Jump titles for example) are like 15+ volumes of comic strips. There are a number of other series that are far fewer in volume numbers, but are worth the buy as much as any other.

Now a list of manga you COULD get:
Anything from Ken Akumatsu (Love Hina/Negima etc.)
.hack//Legend of the Twilight (As well as light-novels A.I Buster and Another Birth)
Chrono Crusade

Your best bet is to go to UP1 (United Publications) and scan through the manga, starting with big company stuff, like Tokyopop/ADV manga etc.
Otherwise, go to the nearest book shop (if you're lucky) and scan through the books. You only know what you may be interested in. ;) But I hope I've helped.

Depends on what you like & what you can afford. I would recommend largely shonen Jump If you are into bleach & Naruto & things to that style. Also if you are buying online amazon do a good price with many of the manga they sell

Huh, tough recommendation ^^

Well, I'll start off with, as always, recommending Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (Yokohama Shopping Trip) as the best slice-of-life manga ever made. Not a massive amount of reading, some chapters have no text at all, but Ashinano really gets across an excellent atmosphere and develops some very realistic characters.

Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) is a comedy/drama series with some awesome and hilarious moments. Although it's worth bearing in mind that the first volume is probably the worst, as the series doesn't quite find its feet til a way into the second volume.

If you're looking for a lot of graphic blood and violence, then Berserk should do you fine. The backstory is interesting, the main plot less so.

Either Monster or 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa are both excellent mystery/thrillers, although the latter hasn't been released in english yet.

Finally, for a damn good adventure story, check out the Nausicaa manga - it's vastly superior to the film.

Most Jump things have been said, and they are quite a blast to read for your "first" manga. I would like to add Negima! Magister Negi Magi to the list. It is utterly fantastic, if you can handle a bit of Akamatsu' fanservice. The artwork is very awesome as well. Also Also Also, The protagonist is from England, ooh ahh.

Thanks for all the input peops. Been looking into my local shopping area and Waterstones is doing a 3 for £15 at the moment. So I'll be heading there straight after work. Somehow I doubt there'll be a large choice like. Guess it'll do for now.
Been reading up on your suggested mangas. Very interested. I love the fact you all suggested different styles too. Coz I love them all XD When I do get my first, I'll post it here so you all know what I decided on. Obviously it'll mostly depend on the choice in Waterstones. Shame there's not much demand in my area.

you all forgot the classic Battle Royale shooting, killing, pervertedness all in one ^^
not sure if you'd be interested in yaoi so there go them....
Saiyuki is fab bout 4 dudes and a tranforming dragon on a journey heading west killin youkai as they go ^^
love hina is also a good one ^^

All sounds good Lee. Well I'm gonna note down your suggestions before I leave work so I can check them againts what Waterstones have in. I would just remember them but my memory is like a sieve, I'm always forgetting what... I.... w..a...s.... huh? What were we talking about again?

Went to Waterstones (only place that sells Manga in my area) and bought my very first Mangas. To my dissapointment/joy their Manga section was closed and only a few choices were available. To my joy however, the reason the manga section was closed was because it was being extended =D Thank god!
In the meantime I had to do with the small section available. So I bought Cowboy Bebop Vol 1-3 and the first Naruto installment. Looking forward to the re-opening though. Voddas needs more choice 8)

ps. Read first 2 Volumes of Bebop. I love it :)

I will be trying as many as I can like. Just waiting for the new manga section to be sorted in my local Waterstones. I'm ok for now. Keep the suggestions there though. I'm making a mental list.
:D

I'm not partial to any particular genre Lee. I could quite easily watch a gore fest followed by a love story. I quite open to anything. Well, most things, I'm sure there's a few I'd have trouble enjoying. I don't know what they are yet tho ^_^ .
