I'll just post a few from the 16-Bit era to get the topic started!

I can't add much here. The music and the visuals convey everything I love about this masterpiece.

I don't play Halo that much (don't own an Xbox) but I've always loved this theme.

I always thought that the 'Enchanted Woods' music in DCK2 was the best in the game - the way the music builds up to the final part and then the harmonica at the end... legendary.

Terranigma, theme tune of Crysta. Quite how the SNES managed this I'll never know. Also used bitterly during the ending (just to rub it in your face), where there's not a dry eye in the house:

Replayed Secret of Mana last year (was shorter than I remember), but this tune is always the one that stuck in my head:

The Super Famicom's version of Tales of Phantasia. The opening song was interesting start to proceedings. Thankfully the chorus was catchy, so it all helped:

Finally for now...

Blaze and Blade: Eternal Quest (or Legend of Foresia in French) for the Playstation. A terrible TERRIBLE RPG, but the music created a brilliant atmosphere. I eventually finished the game (through many hours of headaches and controller abuse

) just so I could hear all the tracks:

Generally RE has had good ambient/ atmospheric pieces, but this is the one 'theme' that really stood out for me

Also, most of the MGS scores apply. Love all of them. There's not a whole bunch of other themes that really stand out to me, besides the obvious Ninty classics of course, but I suppose in some ways the sign of a good soundtrack is that you don't notice it; it just compliments the action nicely. In that category 'Red Dead Redemption' fits nicely; no real stand out pieces, but all good tracks which fit the setting well.

Final Fantasy VI - Celes

One of the most beautiful character themes ever I think. Of course I can't mention Celes' Theme without Aria de Mezzo Caraterre:

Some great tracks in here. These are the ones that immediately come to mind as my favourites, but I'm sure there'd be plenty more if I gave it some thought.

Yuzo Koshiro = God, or as close to it as a mere mortal gets. I think SoR2 has a better soundtrack than SoR1, and there's no more memorable track than this piece of menacing techno.

Oh Sega, you so good at music. This track provides the backing to one of the most epic battles in the game, and it's worthy of it.

I could've chosen from any of half a dozen or more great tunes from Xenoblade, but this icy electro number is my favourite. I spent a couple of hours listening to this as I made my way through the area in which it plays, and I didn't want to leave.

'Enchanted Wood' was always my favourite too - loved the laugh those jacket spectres gave when they threw barrels out you. Honestly, few OST's move me the way that DKC2 did. Whether it's the sea shanties at the start or the melancholy masterpieces that played when I was scrambling through brambles and shooting web platforms in forest, these have always stuck in my head and heart (much like Acquatic Ambience from the first DKC).

Somebody mentioned Monkey Island... The Monkey Island OST's are also examples of brilliant game music (especially the third game).

I was going to come in here and post a few things but Fabby has said them both - one about Yuzo Koshiro being godlike and to post Mechonis Field from Xenoblade (in a game full of peerless music that one was my gold star, if you will).

There's console music in here, but I'm going to raise the flag for my little buddy the Amiga now.

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts had a conversation, which was atrocious, but the music was excellent. Levels 2, 3 and 4 were just like the arcade's, but the Amiga port's soundtrack was done by Tim Follin who changed level 1 (and used again in level 5)'s tune.

Instead of the cheery, bouncy number we had a creepy, menacing bit of a tune:

Lost Patrol. A strategy game involving getting your men across enemy territory, while also making sure you keep their morale and trust in you above non-murderous levels. It was alright, but the music (especially back in the early nineties) held an excellent atmosphere:

Finally Agony. Psygnosis turned their owl logo into the main character of a shump. Music ranged from the insane drum thrashing violent apocalyptic nightmare to a creeping menace. The title tune, though, was good enough for (one member of) Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir place a 'cover' of it on one of their albums... without seeking permission:

Otogi was such a great and criminally overlooked game. The whole soundtrack is fantastic with a relentlessly dark and haunting tone.

Nier offered probably the best game soundtrack I can think of in recent memory. It's incredibly epic! Not sure what language the singing is, but it only adds to the mysterious feel.
