I am quite, quite obsessed with René Laloux (and even more so with Michel Ocelot). I love how he can make such mesmerising films out of such low-budget, limited animation. In other people's hands, the way things slide and float about would just be just be bad, unrealistic animation, but he
utilises it, not hides it, to create that trippy, otherworldly atmosphere… However, I doubt that Miyazaki was influenced by him – rather, I think they were both very influenced by Hieronymus Bosch.

Princess are two films doing the rounds at festivals which are probably worth seeking out. And two anime which I'd recommend you get, if like René Laloux films, are
Taiyô no Ôji: Horusu no Daibôken (released on DVD in the UK as
The Little Norse Prince) and the Kihachiro Kawamoto Work Collection (
Tabi, in particular, is very
Planète sauvage-ish – shorter, but more extreme and more fluidly animated).

I like it (or at least, I was surprised to find that it was an informed parody of anime, rather than an imitation of it) and I'm already homosexual (well, a Kinsey 4 or 5). So what does that make me? :wink:
