DreamWorks to Make 3D Live-Action Ghost in the Shell

I really don't hope this turns into reams and reams of negative opinions on the whole matter, as like, every single other Hollywood adaptation has. I think people should just be happy this is happening. Undoubtably this will turn into a "oh noes it's going to be the worst thing evar!!!", "THEY ARE GONNA RUIN IT OH NOES!!!1111" situation.

EDIT: I mean when more news comes out about the case, etc, as has been mentioned. It seems positive at the moment.

It probably will. Also I just don't think it will go well. Also 3D? Why?

Because you can do a hell of a lot with 3D. We don't know what kind of 3D it will be yet though. Could be something similar to Beowulf with the real life actors getting a 3D form, etc.

Have Dreamworks ever done a full 3D film before? Pixar isn't a Dreamworks group is it, it's Disney, so I don't know if that owns itself or someone else owns it.

"DreamWorks has purchased the rights to the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell.

The company will adapt the futuristic cop thriller into a 3-D live-action movie, according to Variety.

Written by Masamune Shirow, the plot follows the lives of Japanese National Public Safety Commission workers, who battle technology-related crime.

Steven Spielberg was behind DreamWorks' bid for the project. He said: "Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite stories. It's a genre that has arrived and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

Jamie Moss will write the adaptation, while Avi Arad and Steven Paul are expected to produce the film.

Ghost in the Shell, which was first published nearly 20 years ago, has already spawned three anime films and a trio of video games. " Digitalspy

Spielberg was behind the bid, so I wouldn't be suprised if he had some sort of creative role behind the movie.

This is going to be one hell of a film. Just it better get a seriously massive advertising campaign!

Dreamworks have done 3D films before (in the animated sense and not the oh-my-god-its-coming-out-of-the-screen! sense) And they have done good stuff with mixing 3D with live action like all the aftfore mentioned Small Soldiers (that film was awesome :p ). I'm not worried that much by this announcement, the people involved seem capable of pulling it off.

Still awaiting more information on them Monster movies, though. ;/

That's an adaption I'm actually looking forward to! Monster has potential to work very well indeed in Live action. With Ghost in the Shell, it's not that the potential isn't there, it's just that I can't see Hollywood realising it as effectively.

I think that is called retroscoping. Most likely it will share with Beowulf is the 3D glasses thing. That's probably what 3D live action means.

Hmm, they really are looking towards anime / manga for their ideas on films a lot. Not that I'm complaining of course (assuming they dont screw it up...).

Yeah, they ran out of ideas a long time ago, which is why we have seen so many comic book movies, I guess Manga is the next inline.

I just hope it gives Anime & Manga sales a big boost :D

i think this could appeal to people that dont like manga or anime or dont even know about it. as long as they dont make it cheesy or stary away from the what its all about.
i cant wait, id defo go see it. lol

Hollywood keeps getting less original, well ever since the mid 90's. First was the re-makes of classics, then came re-releases of old movies with 'New Special Effects, Woo money', the constant sequals to comedy movies, then comic book movies, then cartoon movies, now Hollywood is biting at the manga and anime areas for movies for quick cash.

Its okay to make these movies, as long as they don't completely ruin them...which is a distinct possibility.

I just hope they focus more on the investigation and detective nature of the franchise more like Innocence and Stand Alone Complex rather than bombarding the viewer with something overwhelming philosophical. Unlike the first movie the thing about Innocence is that although it had those qualities still very present there were other things like the subtle (and more effective) touches of relationship between Batou and Motoko and the investigations processes.

I think if they went in that direction then they would be heading on the right track because all I'm worried about is that they might lose sight and have it either become too pretentious or just focus on the action sequences leaving it feeling like a Matrix clone, which it is obviously not.

Also the guy playing Togusa must have a mullet. ;)

hehe I'm more concerned about Motoko... Altough I believe they would have the names changed. Motoko, Togusa, Batou, Saitou, etc.... don't believe your regular wester audience can "bond" with characters with those names...

Heh that would be horrible - especially thatit was the matrix which copied GITS - the directors openly admitted it on camera!

Oh dear i can already see it now. Reviewers and movie-goers saying "It was cool - but such a matrix clone"

Ok, ive lost all faith in this conversion, regardless of how it is presented, be it philosophical or investigative it will be touted as a matrix rip-off.

ARRRRGH!!!! I hate humans!

Sounds like it could be a good film, especially with Spielberg backing it.

Let's just hope it doesn't become a Matrix clone though.

Hopefully it's the new REAL D than the old red and green tinted glasses, the REAL D glasses feel like high quality and Beowulf took my breath away, the REAL D was great, MUCH better than the old 3D.
