Dragon Ball Z - Season 1

Not sure if any of you agree here, but from what I remember, the dubbing in DBZ was phenomenal. I just can't imagine the characters with the Japanese voices, no matter how hard I try. o_O'

Agreed, Gokus voice, no matter how many times it changed, was awesome.

I didn’t realize that there where so many different English dubs of DBZ out there (2-3 if I’m understanding it right). I am only really interested in the dub we saw in the UK (all those I know it did change at some point) on Cartoon Network. With these new box sets are they the dub we got the UK?

Yes and No. The short answer to your question is this release uses the same cast you saw during episodes 54 -107 when they aired on UK TV.

The long answer is that are two DBZ dubs namely the Funimation dub and the 'international' Blue Water dub. However, the first 53 episodes of the Funimation dub were originally outsourced by Funimation someone else (Ocean Group I think, but I could be wrong), with episodes 54+ being dubbed in house by Funimation using different cast. However, Funimation redubbed the first 53 episodes using their in house cast for this release and the earlier uncut release.

The Blue Water dub was created in Canada for international (non US) english speaking markets, including the UK, they also did the Dragonball and the Dragonball GT dubs that were shown on UK TV.

However, for DBZ the first 107 episodes shown on UK TV use the Funimation dub, for episodes 108+ the Blue Water dub was used.

As for your question about the cropping. I've seen one episodes of the new remaster but it didn't detract from the how that much. As long as you're not that fussy about video quality you won't care about it. Besides, the earlier 3/4 episode Dragonball Z DVDs would probably be a nightmare to get hold of and they're not all uncut anyway.

To be honest all I really care about it hearing Vegeta's voice the way I remember it. He had a great voice in the first part of DBZ which then changed part-way through the Frieza saga. It wasn't that different (sounds like the new guy is trying to copy the old guy) but the new voice was less distinctive and rather dull.

the original pioneer releases and funimation broadcast was edited, so some scenes and episodes were missing, thats why the episode count is different to what dub fans are used to. suffice to say, the dvd set is entirely cropped but at least the dubs are consistent throughout.

Vegeta was my all time favourite character, just because he was so badass and narcassistic.
The times when he always makes comments on Goku (or anybody's) inability to fight without caring about anything else; that's how things should be done

Then you're out of luck I think. During the Saiyan and Namek sagas Vegeta was voiced by Brian Drummond, who then reprised the role for the Blue Water Dub (which was used starting with the Androids Saga). I believe the guy you're compaining about is Christopher R. Sabat, who did indeed try and copy Drummond's Vegeta without really succeeding, I read elsewhere that he's redubbed some of his lines during the Frieza saga for this release but given that those episodes haven't been released yet, we can't really judge the difference.

Incidently, all my episode numberings in my previous post refer to the edited version. The edits only affect the Saiyan/Vegeta Saga, the Namek Saga, the Ginyu Saga and the Frieza Saga.

The DBZ fans must have been as pissed off with the cropping as I was with the UK Season 1 DVD of House MD being converted to 4:3. I understand their annoyance.

It was in 4:3? I never noticed...and I watched it with my TV set to wide-screen! lol Picture ratios used to annoy me (I send 3 TVs back to there shops because they didn't have all possible ratios!) but now I've sort of forgotten about it. If I can be tricked into thinking its wide-screen when its not I'm happy.

So are these new DVDs going to span the whole DBZ series?

Any word if they will go into DB-GT? (which I've never seen!)

Yes, they'll releasing the entire series this way. I've seen rumours that they're planning on doing the same thing for Dragonball, but I don't know about GT though. Nothing's been said about either series, bit it wouldn't surprise me if they did. You're not missing much though, the best episodes by far are the early episodes, which Funimation released as the 'lost episodes' and they are nowhere near as good as DB or DBZ.

If you didn't want to buy the new boxset (because of the picture problem) and you wanted to buy the whole DBZ series, what are your other choices? I saw the Vegeta saga was on sale in two parts and as singles as part of some other collection.

I’ve managed to do a bit of research and I find the Ocean Group dub to be superior to the Funimation dub (the one used on the new box set).

Is it possible to get the whole of DBZ with the Ocean Group dub on DVD?

No the Ocean group dub is not available on DVD anywhere.

The truth is this box set is the only uncut english language release of the Vegeta saga. Funimation's previous release of the Vegeta saga uncut was cancelled half way through to make way for this release. Madman will be releasing a R4 version of the same set with the problems. I have no idea how easy it is to get hold of either the earlier R4 or R1 releases of the other sagas.
