Crunchyroll: HTML5 Coming This September

I know thats why I thought support would at least respond saying its flagged, it is a joke that CR pretends to be WW but is very america centric I mean american peak hours is when I mostly dont get problems.

I have the HTML5 Player given to me (so I'm probably one of the 25% of the users who got it this week). It works at least.

Thanks to Geoff on Discord, you can in fact turn off the subtitles for any screencap stuff:

Anything else us unfavoured peasants and the unwashed who have still not cancelled their premium need to know? How does it compare to the old player, you know, when it worked?

It’s a bit better not great having to turn off the actual script to screencap is stupid and a joke. My main problem it always selects “auto” so I have to choose 1080p to ensure it’s 1080p

  • Player is able to start the episode.
  • While it's set to Auto it does go straight to HD if your connection can handle it. However if you try to change it to 1080p HD, the player will constantly buffer and not start the video properly.
  • Subtitles are clear and readable.
  • The mouse icon will get in the way when you watch the episode in full-screen mode.
  • You can jump straight to a specific point and back without too much hassle.
  • You can turn off subtitles by going into the webpage 'Inspect' section for those who want to screencap frames without the subtitles getting in the way (this is for those who want to make use of reaction memes or need screenshots for article/review purposes).

  • You can jump straight to a specific point and back without too much hassle.

This is actually my biggest bugbear with it - there doesn't seem to be any way to see what point timewise in the episode you are skipping to before you actually do it. Which makes it a real pain trying to go back to a specific scene, or trying to skip OPs.

Aha HA! didn't get the new player before due to having to use Opera (chrome had malware) but I've fixed that and they've given me the new player! I'll check it out more another time, very close to work o' clock atm

Crunchyroll have posted a new update on the HTML5 video player status.

So far 50% of the users now have the updated player. Upon feedback, Crunchyroll plan to add more features to improve their video player. The following below are planned updates:
  • Volume settings will stay the same when switching between episodes.
  • Fullscreen mode will exit when switching between episodes.
  • Subtitles will not show up stacked one on top of the other.
  • Subtitles will be displayed when casting from the Chrome browser.
They're also working on a new version of the Subtitles Selector. In the original Flash version they were located under the description for each episode. The new version will allow folks to change subtitles and also turn them off during playback.

Hello everyone!!

A few months ago, we started testing out our new video player to a small sample of the Crunchyroll family and received positive feedback. Over the last month, we’ve made various fixes and improvements, as we increased the percentage of users who were given the new player. We’re pleased to share with you that as of today, we’ve hit 100% — the new player is now available for everyone!!

In the two weeks since we began serving the player to 50% of users, we’ve addressed the following issues:

1. Volume settings are now preserved between episodes.
2. Subtitle rendering when casting / mirroring via Chromecast has been fixed.
3. Cursor now disappears when in fullscreen mode.
4. Improvements on progress bar for better rewind and forward operation.
5. Accurate time index when scrubbing the progress bar.
6. Keyboard shortcuts support added (i.e. “f” for fullscreen, “m” for mute).
7. Support for video playback when returning to a previous page using the back button on the browser.

Thank you to everyone who reached out to us about these and other concerns - your feedback has been incredibly helpful to us, and we’re not done making improvements yet! We are currently working on the following issues and will be releasing fixes shortly:

1. Font style correction: some subtitles are losing styling or being changed to Arial.
2. Subtitle selector: this will provide an ability to choose subtitle language within the video player, or turn them off entirely if desired.
3. Typesetting: issues such as subtitles stacked on top of one another or spaced incorrectly in some videos are being addressed.
4. Support for iOS mobile web.

If you have questions about our new player, please check out the FAQ that the CR Support team put together here.

If you couldn’t find your question there, or wanted to give any feedback on the player, reach out to us directly at this link. Thank you again for your support, and please let us know what you think!

The new update means that the player now works both on the Chrome browser on Android and the PS4 browser (useful if the app goes wonky, I have used the Funimation website on the PS4 browser before when the app was struggling).
As an aside I didn't log in when testing and boy have the ads got even more obnoxious. There was one before the episode started then 6! after the OP which included 2 for Golden Kamuy and another 2 for Overlord!
