UK Anime Distributor Crunchyroll/Funimation/Manga UK Discussion Thread

Germany will receive a Sailor Moon Season 1 Steelbook Edition in November. It's quite possible that the UK release will be around the same time, as they could save costs (manufacturing, approvals,...) by using the same packaging (but different discs)

Remember that leak several years ago about a Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya blu-ray release in Europe?

Depressing to be a Haruhi fan sometimes.

I at least have Disappearance on AUS region blu-ray and got Melancholy S1 and 2 on Region A USA bluray.

Did Crunchyroll ever indicate they wanted to bring over the later Parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? Or is that one of those licences that is just not up for grabs anymore?

It's probably available but since they closed the UK office there's no one to negotiate for the licences. When Manga were bought by Funi they were still allowed to operate autonomously and persue their own acquisitions.

I managed to get the highly sought after CE Box set that funi released in the us 7 or 8 years ago.

I'm wondering if the Manga UK BD of Gargantia is better than the Viz release. The listings on blu-ray.com suggest that they're different discs (supposedly the audio on the Viz discs is 16 bit DTS, while the Manga UK discs are supposedly 24 bit PCM). This review claims that the UK discs were authored locally and has unlocked subtitles (did the Viz release have locked subtitles?).

Can someone with the UK release confirm these details? Also comment on the picture quality and subtitle legibility (the Viz white subs can be hard to read and tend to blend in). If these discs were done by Manga UK, and aren't just a copy of the Viz release, I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance that the video quality is significantly improved (the Viz release is known to not be that good). But I'm not sure what Manga UK's reputation was for their discs back then, so if someone could comment on that, it might also be helpful.

Not asking at random; I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble to try tracking down the OOP Manga UK BDs or not.
I can't confirm anything regarding quality, but Just Passing Through has done a review of the Blu-ray on myReviewer. But if you're after any extras, including the Petit Gargantia shorts, I wouldn't recommend the UK release, as it has no extras at all.

From what I can remember, Manga UK's release of Gargantia had better picture quality compared to the US release. But it doesn't include any extra features, & it doesn't have the proper chapter stops either.

Whats with all the steelbook releases? Plenty of titles what can be released but instead opt to resell same stuff in a steelbook

People (not me) buy them. As long as it helps keep companies in business making physical media in this era of declining sales I'm ok with it. Hopefully they don't take the place of new releases.

My objection is when something is available only in steelbook form. I really dislike steelbooks and when that's the case most of the time I just don't buy. I don't think this happens often with anime, but it's happening with some studio releases of live-action films.

I just got an email from AL about these, and they are all releasing 20 October. Hopefully that isn't the only thing Crunchyroll is releasing in October. As this is kind of an unusual time of month for their announcements I think, maybe this is just a special secondary announcement.

I dont get the part where they release the series and then few months or years later same release but in a tin, why not release them along side the standard versions?

In the case of Overlord, I think steelbooks weren't a big thing at the time.

But I imagine the main reason is there's a significant number of people who will buy it twice by them doing this. An example of that is the Ghibli films in the US. GKids released them in regular packaging, then later they did those weird book-like packages, though I think only a few came out in that form, then more recently they've done them all as steelbooks. I would imagine a significant number of the steelbook buyers already had the original releases.
