That's a good little trick chaos, but what I really meant was that if someone wanted to know about Gundam:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4189 their brain might very well explode.
Whoever wants to learn about gundan would deserve that ;D

Gundan is a massive franchise, so It'not really fair. If it was a particular gundan series / movie / OVA, then the trick works. If not, well, you're better off on wiki or animenfo.com then....

I'd suggest Monster.

Its got everything you asked for dark, non-mecha, psychological and drama.

Exactly what came to mind with me. Aside form that you could check out 'Welcome to the NHK', the animation may not be so great and it does lean towards comedy a lot but at the heart of it is quite a dark psychological drama I'd say.

I've noticed most modern anime costs a bomb.
Does anyone know of such a place where these dvds come cheap at all?
Now there's a question and a half. Really, I find it's a game of chance. I'm always looking for cheaper deals. But looking is half the fun. Mite help you if you have multi regional DVD player also, as you maite find that you can get a lot of DVDs cheaper on American Websites like Amazon for example. I'm not a multi regional buyer so I stick to sites liek PLAY.com (have sales quite often however selection can be limited). I'm sure others will be able to give you better examples of websites, I'm a bit rusty at the moment ^_^

So come on guys I'm now putting you on the spot....

If I said recommend something thats dark, non-mecha, psychological, drama... something like to me, what would you suggest?

Oh and perhaps something else thats simular to 'Voices From A Distant Star' - that has the romantic element but no kiddie humour....?

Hope your brains feel picked

Picked indeed. You've already been told the big names like Lain, Paranoia Agent and Welcome to the NHK (awesome series IMO). Monster is a very good choice also by the way, watched that recently. But looking at past posts, you got a lot of good animes to choose from.

As had been said previosly, Wikki is a good source for information but it can spoil a whole series for you in it's first paragragh giving to much info away. Think this has already been mentioned but ANN is always gonna be my first choice. It's like reading the back of a DVD summary.

There's a thread somewhere where people post good deals, that's useful too!

What I do is maintain a list of what I'm looking for and when I catch wind of a good deal, grab those items. Of course there are still some essentials I simply have to pick up on release at near full price but I'm mostly careful :)

Play and Amazon regularly seem to cut prices on some shows so if you're patient you can pick things up neatly there. The prices on Paprika and Millennium Actress at Amazon at the moment are incredible (they're two of my favourite films if you can't tell!).

Does that have anything to do with the amazing Susumu Hirasawa soundtracks by any chance? I love all Satoshi Kon's work, but these two stand out for me for that very reason.

Yes. I love him, though my partner if possible loves him even more. He's dead set on having The Girl in Byakkoya playing at our wedding :D

I love all Kon works in general too. Hope they keep working together as long as I have money to see their lovely productions!

If you enjoyed the themes present in Voice's, you should check out The Place Promised in Our Early Days and 5 Centimeters Per Second.

They don't feature as much sci-fi as Voice's, but they're both by the same bloke, longer and a pleasure to watch.

A few people seem to dislike the ending to Place Promised though, but it's still generally excellent IMO.
Yes. Go. Now. Watch both of these.
There both brilliant! Two of my favourites!

As the link explains, its genres are exactly what you asked for, and it is actually really good:

Genres: drama, horror, mystery, psychological, thriller

I quite agree. Never got round to finishing it myself, but it was an excellent series from the 8 or so episodes I caught. I hear rumours of a live-action movie but it seems like there's too much in Monster to be able to do that.

so you like slow paced shows =) you should watch only yesterday and whisper of the heart as well. Great movies from Ghibli. Wait, great movies from Ghibli is kinda redundant...

He means that *all* movies from Ghibli are great. I second "Only Yesterday" and add "Grave of The Fireflies".

I dunno, Howl's moving Castle wasn't great, and I hear rumour that Earthsea isn't brilliant either.

Grave of the fireflies I've seen twice only. The first time, I've shed a few tears and it left me feeling really depressed for a week. The second time, it left me feeling even more depressed... That's how powerful this movie is.

I did like Howl and Earthsea, I do reckon they are minor ghibli films, but I believe that if you don't look at them biased by all the previous goodness, you can enjoy both of them greatly.

Oh Howl was by no means a BAD movie, I'd still watch it above about 80% of the rubbish movies the anime industry feeds the world, but yes, compared to GHibli's previous stuff it's not fantastic.

I'd have to say that Mononoke (for all that people tell me it's too preachy) is probably my fave of theirs.

My point exactly! Mononoke and Nausica re ones that I keep watching over and over again...
I've realized that the one with the smallest replay value for me is spirited away.... Don't get me wrong, I love spirited away, but I've just watched that 3 or 4 times...

My two favourites :) I'm not a huge Ghibli fan myself though so my taste seems a bit out of whack.
