That's a bit strong and totally not what I got from that scene:
The fella was into Mari and then suddenly finds he's got no chance. He only says it's not easy for two women to get married (very true in Japan BTW) in a lame attempt at trying to put off Arisa (who he's only just met and doesn't know about their relationship because Mari's been hiding it) out of jealousy.
He then sees them hug and accepts he's beat and joins Arisa in watching Mari working and then says that he's got Arisa's back and will chase off any other guys!
