Can anyone recommend me an entire anime series?

Shiro Yui

Brigade Leader
i'm looking to purchase an entire anime series box set, but i'm stumped on what to get.

i'm thinking among the lines of the Kino's Journey or Serial Experiments Lain sets. Can anyone recommend any shows that have been released either here or the US which are mature in conetent and context that have been released in either a thinpak or box set?

Zero No Tsukaima finished this last night and enjoyed it
Genshiken is a must own for all anime fans
Any of the Tenchis especially GXP are well worth watching

Kino's Journey is one of the best value thinpaks available at the moment!

You could try Wolf's Rain, although it's released in 2 boxsets.

Mezzo DSA is worth a watch, although it's action based and not a thinky job.

Arjuna is a very nice anime, quite mature, but you'll have to be able to stomach the environmental issues the story throws at you.

Mezzo DSA... did that have a plot line? XP

Wolf's Rain is either love or hate.

If you haven't seen it... watch Evangelion. >_>

Mezzo was fun! It was more episodic than deep meaningful plotline, but that doesn't mean it was bad! I loved Forte - even without the sex scenes  and enjoyed watching DSA just as much. A bit more gore would have been nice!

Wolf's Rain I'm enjoying and it's definitely worth checking out if it's boxset/cheap titles HiroYui is looking for.

Evangelion has never been released in a cheap boxset, infact every release gets more and more expensive and I've never bothered updating my videos or VCDs because of that! (Even 2nd hand someone wanted £50 for the basic boxset!!).

There is the US platinum thinpak box of Evangelion if that is still available.

As for mature anime boxed sets there are UK boxed sets of Serial Experiments Lain and Paranoia Agent due to be released this month, which are two of my personal favourite anime.

sorry, i should have been more clear, i've seen evangelion, saw bits of wolf's rain and wasn't too impressed. also, i've gone off the action/shounen attractive male/female protaganists, just want a well paced, well told show that dosn't rely on the above traits.

maybe it's Lain after all........................

If you are interested in R1 boxsets/thinpacks go to http://www.up1.co.uk and search specifically for box sets - its actually a very good resource for what is available. After that you can refine your search down. UK anime boxsets are a bit easier to list due to the lack of them.

The main thoughtful or more mature anime UK boxsets would include Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Paranoia Agent, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne (Warning! quality of escaflowne boxsets is weak).

In the US there are freaking loads. Many of which are only availabel in single volumes such as Kinos Journey that was already mentioned, and I will second it, its a fantastic series. You start getting great examples like various Crest/Banner of the Stars series, Last Exile, Full Metal Panic, Noir, Rahxephon, Gunslinger Girl, Planetes and Witch Hunter Robin

Theres also good titles that are completely unavailable here, such as 3x3 Eyes, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Patlabor, VOTOMS, Key the Metal Idol, Midori no Hibi, Outlaw Star, the good Gundam mini-series like War in the Pocket, Stardust memory and The 08th MS Team, you also have classics like Lodoss War, Utena, Saber Marionette J, Slayers TV

Most have been mentioned so, if you like Kino's Journey, look out for Mushishi in the near future, unlicensed but it should be soon enough :)

I collect up the discs so eventually I have the whole show to watch, they sit on the shelf patiently waiting for me to get around to them, one I was putting off was Last Exile, started it the other week and watched the whole thing in 4 days, it was far better and moreish than I expected

Mushishi unlicensed? Never mind that, super-popular, super-famous stuff like Ouran High School Host Club, Haruhi Suzumiya, Air Gear, xxxHolic and Nana are all unlicensed.

I know FUNi (IIRC, maybe Media Blasters) has registered a mushishi domain name, and Del Rey licensed the manga recently.

But yeah, Mushishi is too arty for them yanks indeed. Certainly the mainstream anime market in the US, is massively unadventurous when it comes to anime. This is especially the case with anime on TV - US TV anime is a boys, male teens and young male adults demographic.

Haruhi is under discussion and will likely be announced before the end of next year. Nana is part of the "slice of life" genre which often gets overlooked. Air Gear will probably get licenced as will Host Club and xxxHolic. In some cases it seems that licensees wait for absolute numbers of episodes and series to be available before taking the plunge.

They are *all* under discussion. And personally there is no real discernable pattern between number of episodes released and license announcement. It varies by licensee, property holder, title everything.

The one thing that is true is that discussions start way before the airing date.

You can say 'probably' a lot, but there have been many extremely popular shows that get mentioned at cons a lot that nobody has licensed yet.

The major trend for the last 2 years is barrel scraping.
