Big Brother at London Expo

The Boss
I've received this email:
Dear Anime Uk News
I am writing to you about the appalling article and treatment towards anime fans and cosplayers at London anime expo. The owners of the convention allowed channle 5 and daily star to label the sub culture as freaks and oddballs . If a newspaper wrote a article about race or religion they deemed unpc and write a retort and written apology . So why do they have to write such blatant slander towards our sub culture
Sincerely

blogger of Geek media Centre

The article in question is http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/19 ... es-batty-/

and the offending piece:
Staff hoped London’s Comic Con event would offer up some of the nation’s biggest oddballs.

I didn't see this show, as I avoid TV altogether, but from the comments on the daily star, it seemed quite a few people find very offensive the way they portrait cosplayers in it.

I've contacted the Expo's organizers and I'll post what they say about this. From my point of view, if they used the language people say they did in the show, then as Ofcom letter must be sent and even a lawsuit should be considered for exposing expo-goers to ridicule under false pretense.

That could explain some of the cameras i saw around the place. Still, that's hellish, and i do hope there is some people willing to fight back against that. If what we like and do is "odd" then they really are of a closed mind. Thankfully, it is only the Daily Star(and channel 5), so it will be overlooked a fair bit. Gossip papers are always hilariously bad anywho.

It's a bit weird, but I guess it's there job to spot weirdos who want to be put into the Big Brother house. I didn't see anything hugely wrong with it bar some persnickety details.

Also --
Celia Mitchard, 25, from Bath, who dressed as a joker-like harlequin, said she wanted to bring mayhem to the show.
I really really hope she was Harley Quinn.

Fight back we will. It's a hobby, so it has no other practical purpose other than entertain people. Belittling a hobby is foolish, but we have to make sure they understand how foolish it is.

Yes, I agree that the sweeping generalization of comic and anime fans as some of the countries biggest oddballs is unacceptable and borderline discriminatory.

The only problem is that they probably found them, so it will be hard to argue the case.

lawsuit? Oh come on, that's an over reaction and a half.

Leave the pretend journalists to their own devices, getting all bent out of shape about it will do us, and the Expo no good.

I just read the article...they could have at least tried to be subtle. Rather than an article, it seemed more like a rant from a 10-year old.

Also, I'd rather cosplay 365 days a week than watch Big Brother. I love how the article seems to think that people went for Big Brother xD

And lastly, as a freelance journalist; the writing in that article horrifies me.

Absurd that they made it sound as though people cared about their presence :p

But as an attendee (not a cosplayer) I don't mind being called a freak/oddball, especially when it's a publication of that quality doing the labelling!

R

Yeah, I've never been to the expo nor have I cosplayed. However I imagine that if I were a cosplayer I would have thicker skin than to be insulted by the Daily star calling me an oddball

Oh my god... how dare Channel 5 make a reality show that makes anime fans look like crazy obsessive nutjobs.

...they're totally ripping off Tokyopop's idea!

this is why i dont watch big brother. people say dont judge others on appearance and these B******S are saying that. uneducated closed minded a******

....the phrase "don't feed the trolls" springs to mind.

Well it's only going to be read by two groups of people- incensed fans (who will obviously not have their opinions changed by it), and daily star readers- who lets face it are already a load of closed minded racist bigots.

This is a paper that openly supports racist group the English defense league, so really calling expo attendees oddballs is quite low down their list of crimes
