Autumn 2008 anime season: impressions thread

(Watched ep 1 of each)

Toradora - Funny at times, but very similar to other anime series.

Chaos;Head - Wow! I think I'll enjoy this series! I love the main character; He is hilarious when that girl is chatting him up.

I just watched episode 1 of Kannagi. I must say, it was awesome! The animation was incrediblely fast paced, the humor was fantastic, the characters are very likeable and unique. Along with Chaos;Head, I'm sure I will enjoy these :)

Also, I watched skip beat #1 which was very strange. I'll probably wait and watch another few episodes before casting my judgement on carrying on watching it or dropping it p_p. Although, saying that, it does seem very fast paced.

Gary: Zero -- 1-3

This series is a total mess. As someone else on MAL mentioned, everything wrong with anime is on show here, ranging from super-powered school girls with swords to elite special forces of youngsters (well, mostly) who happen to be the last line of defence the world has against evil. School girls need to be banned from any Japanese animation that isn't pornographic.

The first episode had a likeable (enough) cast of generic/copied characters, but it was all mindless (and physically impossible) monster killing until close to the end. The terrific ending saved the episode, leading viewers to believe the mostly average episode had been so average on purpose in order to hit them with a falcon punch at the end - it was the best ending to an opening episode I've seen. I was left eager to see more of the cast and the events that lead up to the finale of the first episode.

After the 'What the ****!?' ending, I had hoped the next episode would delve into the past of who I assumed to be the main character, going back to the very beginning of the events that lead up to his and his friends deaths. There had been more than enough flashbacks in the first episode to suggest that would be the case. But that wasn't what happened: episode 2 presented the viewers with an all new cast of generic characters, this cast being lead by a sword wielding school girl (very original). It ended up being even more inferior to the pre-ending sections of the first episode; it only offered completely uninteresting characters and poor to decent action sequences.

The third episode did manage to repair the damage a little by giving the series some back-story, with the relationship between the two sword wielding 'sisters' getting explained in detail, starting from the time they first met each other. It was a nice change of pace from the mindless action that had been shoved down my throat prior to the episode. But seeing a nice little story about how two female characters bonded (no, not like that - perv :/) and become close wasn't enough to make me forget most of the first episode and all of the second...and anyway, I know the boring action is likely to resume in episode 4.

I'm going to watch the 4th episode later. If it doesn't make me want to see what happens in the 5th then it's going to be the second winter anime dropped by me.

Shame about Ga Rei Zero; really felt like it had latched onto something good with that first ending. Too bad it totally destroys any chance it had in the second episode. As Aion points out; a pair of sword wielding school girls is just too much of a cliche to swallow undiluted.

What does the series lack? - In my opinion it's subtlety. If it had spent just a little more time developing backstory and characters at the start instead of immediately charging into the 'OMG MOTORCYCLE GUNBATTLE!' cliches it might have been servicable. Oh, and the music was awful too :(

One Outs. I only knew about this from Paul's blog, and it was quite a good first episode. Enough to keep me watching, anyway. Animation by Madhouse, so it's fluid as ever and it feels like a spiritual successor to Kaiji [And Akagi, even if I haven't seen it].

It hasn't given much away about where it's going in the story department, only intrigue about one outs and the manly men gambling for dollars a thousand is awesome.

A real GAR-fest... I love it. Just check the immense engrish opening

Yeah One outs does have a similar anticipation feeling of Akagi and Kaiji, but I didn't get as excited about it...a show really has to grab me to make me watch it if there are gonna be zero attractive female characters, lol.

Of all the ones started going with
Kurozuko - anyone get the impression that they wanted to do a series for the awful Highlander movie but didn't/couldn't so they made this instead? If this is the case the abandoned of the tenuous links to the Highlander mythos has helped it greatly, but not sure if it is enough. Will keep it up for a bit longer.
Gundam 00 - still hoping this series will blow me away like it seems to be giving everyone else huge mecha stiffies with which they are wanking all over the internet. While good hasn't displayed any god like genius yet.
Chaos Head - A win for What The F**Kery harem goodness. Loving the fact the more questions it answers it propagates another dozen like a quizical hydra, and teh fact it can keep you guessing as to what is reality and what is fantasy as you watch it, five minutes after finishing it and as you sit on the crapper 2 days later.
Tytania- Just wondering how they are going to get it all done int the number of episodes they have. I mean Legends of Galatic heroes was 110 episodes long and they rushed things a bit toward the end, This is only 26 episodes (unless this is just part one of many).
Michiko to Hatchin- if any more episodes come out
Ga Rei Zero- had me, was losing me, getting me back... maybe.
there are a couple others watching if there is nothing else on.

Actually, that's a point; I never even thought about the possibility of a second series. I've only seen episode 1, and it was enjoyable, but I did think about how big a story they are trying to tell [in comparison to LotGH].

I like it, but bad CG is very bad...
