In a Nintendo Direct presentation last month, Nintendo revealed that the video game publisher Atlus USA will be releasing Attack On Titan: Humanity In Chains, Spike Chunsoft's Nintendo 3DS game based on the hit anime series, in Europe and North America as a digital download exclusive in May. The publisher has now confirmed a 12th May release date for North America but unfortunatelly, on this day, European fans received a grim reminder.

Due to a copyright claim in Europe, the game will be released in the continent as Shingeki no Kyojin: Humanity in Chains and its release has been delayed, with no word on when the new expected release period will be.

When the game is finally released however, everyone who purchases a copy from the Nintendo eShop will receive a Nintendo 3DS theme (pictured above) for free; a theme that won't be available outside of the deal!

Manga Entertainment UK released the hit anime adaptation on DVD and blu-ray in the United Kingdom, while Kodansha Comics USA have been publishing the original manga and its various spin-off series'.

Will you be buying Shingeki no Kyojin: Humanity in Chains?

Man Attack On Titan sure has it hard in the UK doesn't it. Between Manga UKs botched DVD/BD release, the lack of TV exposure compared to the US where it was a big success on the Toonami block and now this. I'm surprised it's even lucky to be available in the UK at all

How is the Manga release botched? I was planning on buying the AoT blu rays at some point. Should I avoid the UK release?

They removed the extras from the second Blu-ray and put them on a DVD. Called it a Collectors edition. There was also some issues with the subtitle translations.

If you can't play A locked discs get the Australian release. Same disc as the US just with Madmans logos and trailers instead of Funimations.

I'll keep that in mind, thank you.

In regards to the game. In the game news thread I said I would be suprised if it got released in the states and Europe at the same did. Atlus stirkes again.

You mean at the same time right?, actually I think since Sega bought them the gap between US and UK releases of Atlus games has decreased significantly

I wonder if the copyright claim is anything to do with Titan Attacks. PS Plus was offering it free a few months ago and I thought it might have been an AoT game, but it clearly isn't. (http://www.puppygames.net/titan-attacks/)

Wouldn't have thought so as Attack on Titan and Titan Attacks are different; (same words but presented differently).

I think the Humanity in Chains part was the reason it got a copyright claim put against the title; either that or its just an excuse.

Anyone else find it amusing how the DVD/BD release of Attack on Titan got a 15 yet the game will receive an PEGI 18 (saying that even the two episodes available for FREE on Nintendo eShop say PEGI 18 as opposed to BBFC 15)

It's also rated PEGI 18 for 'Extreme Violence'.
What?

I own a Japanese copy of the game (albeit without the latest update that the international version will have) and it's actually pretty tame (even compared to the anime). I'm guessing this rating was made because Scandinavian Europe gets offended by everything.

If it was, then that part is what would have been changed instead of reverting to the series original Japanese name, but if there's a copyright claim on attack on titan then how did the series get through without being challenged.

I wonder if it's because one of the franchise's various European licensors also has the merchandising rights for that region and are blocking the use of the name in that country, which as a result of how digital game releases work (especially for small publishers), has resulted in a continent-wide change?
