Kurogane

Chuunibyou
This came up after a discussion at college on Friday (been meaning to post this since for further insight, from you lovely people); the everlong bashing of the opinion that women can be funny.

From my experience, I've found that 99% and higher of women can't tell a genuinely funny joke that appeals to both genders, without it being so downright juvenile or just plain stupid.

In fact, I haven't heard a clever schtick or funny comment from a women in so long, I'm beginning to doubt it ever happened, making the above percentage redundant.

Before the testicle bashing begins, I'm not saying every man is a Connolly or Carling, but EVERY class clown, or acclaimed 'funny guy' in a certain group of friends or class, is always a man. It's just not up for debate. No sir. Nuh uh. No wai.

Women who make their female friends laugh just don't count, as women couldn't tell a great joke from a self deprecative opinion if their live depended on it.

Thoughts, you foolish piss wizards?

I love you all really. srsly.

That just sounds like a ridiculous double standard to me. You're clearly biasing your first statement towards groups which are male dominated, and even if mixed, girls are still as likely to take a 'seen and not heard' approach to what they say as they were 50 years. I also basically disagree with the idea of the 'class clown' or 'funny guy' because every man in the history of ever has thought they were this person and because should by any miracle he actually exist he is:

a) Considered a bit of a prick by everyone not won over by his 'humour'.
b) A lot more 'tragic' than he is actually 'funny'.
c) Only the 'funny guy' through virtue of having soul-less friends, or being the guy who can regurgitate TV and Stand-up quotes faster than anyone else.

Anyone who measures hilarity by looking at 'class-clowns' is as credible as one who says that Women can neither tell jokes (and while I'm at this point, I'd like to ask: who actually can? If you can label something is 'a joke' it's inevitably so formulaic that it isn't funny. You put Jokes in crackers, not stand-up routines) nor understand them.

Now if the question was 'Are Men Funnier than Women', I might actually agree with you. But I'm puzzled how you can say "women couldn't tell a great joke from a self deprecative opinion if their live depended on it" when the self-depreciative edge is what has made so many Male comics successful. It doesn't even need to be vocalised, it's just part of the charisma that the best guys have.

I was handing out the most obvious and known example, as then everyone would know would have to know what I'm talking about.

Instead of arguing semantics, how about actually contributing? As far as I'm concerned, a joke is something which makes you laugh, be it somethign a person said, or something as crude as a toilet humour: joke, got it chachi?

People who are appointed as funny or hilarious are dubbed that by other people. If someone went around blowing up their own ass saying how awesomely funny they were, it wouldn't count for ****. Where'd you get that?

It seems genuinely funny didn't register with you. There's a massive difference between some ass telling a recycled 'your mom' joke or recieving a somewhat seconded applause when letting one go in in the middle of Math, to someone who can make a mature audience laugh with his or her--probably not, originality and character.

You seem to have the sense of humour akin to most house ferns, so, next.

To answer simply: no.

A lot of women seem to laugh when they think they've said something funny. It's like they suddenly burst out for no apparent reason with laughter mid sentence. Also, from other observations, when these events occur, it's ONLY ever the other women that laugh back (it's just safe for a man to acknowledge it, even if bewildered).

I guess that's why so few women (at least compared to men) are comedians, eh?

 Since humour is something everyone responds to differently and there are many different types, this question seems pointlessly divisive and like it's trying hard to start up a one-sided debate. See, if I say they are, your comeback will be that it's because I'm a woman and therefore stupid female humour works on me. No woman can actually answer your question without opening herself up to a witty rejoinder that invalidates everything she says. And so far when someone who hasn't brought their gender into it has tried to disagree, they were labelled as having no sense of humour. Enjoy your win:win topic.

I don't particularly like any comedians that you'd likely rate so won't bother saying more. Yeah it's probably because I don't have a penis, because naturally everything comes down to that.

Oh geez, people... Kurogane, I think this topic would of been better with just the question, cuz it seem like everyone has a 'chip on their shoulder' atm. I'm usually agreing with Rui and such, but I was hoping for a simple thread with simple answers instead of nit-picking.

I think women can be funny though, but not as straight-off joke, like knock-knock or stand up comedy. They just gossip 1st and then one of the group says something odd but relative to the topic (purposely or not) and it becomes funny. That's how I've found it, having main female friends compared to the odd male every so often.

Ignoring the huge banner that Kurogane seems to be waving saying "flame me women!" :p i'm gonna say yes, my best friend is a woman and one of the things that drew us together was our similar humour. I'm not going to say every woman is funny however, just as not every man is a rational logicmachine who fights bears by day and creates science by night.

I can see what you're saying about popular comedians but has no-one thought that perhaps because of the stereotypes you're pushing - there is no chance for women to get into comedy? The few woman comedians i've seen have been very good but maybe its really hard for a new woman comedian to get on the scene because "women just arent funny"

Like Rui says it comes down to differing tastes of humour between men and women. Men like violence, sex and laughing at other people's expenses - something which 90% of the popular jokes are about.

Yep, I agree with that. I once went to a comedy act at Uni, and it was a female comedian on stage. She wasn't big news, but I found her funnier than most other (male) comedians. She was the only female act I saw, but I remember it better than any other.
Maybe the stereotype is weighing them down, and that's unfortunate.

Attempting to bite my tongue and try to avoid the obvious this time, I will say that I've seen no difference in quality of scripted comedy shows based on the chromosonal make up of their writers. Likewise with manga/anime, I have laughed at series penned by men and women alike as well as having jokes fall flat from both sides.

I don't like stand up at all. Class clowns usually made me want to facepalm rather than laugh no matter what they had in their pants. I do like non sequitur humour and particularly sharp wit. I freely acknowledge that I get less enjoyment out of comedy than average though I can make my [male if it matters] friends laugh when needed, and they me.

I know a lot of women who are extremely funny and I also know a lot of comedy shows with actresses who are also very funny. So yes I'm going go with that woman can be just as funny or unfunny as men can be.

Should've mentioned before that I actually have a slightly biased sense of humour, in terms of if I've heard it before, or it's just downright retarded (like 90% of it all is) then I just won't laugh, and will objectively make that person feel like a twat.

Plus all comedy shows that I can think of at the moment, minus Veronica's Closet (probably more, but no one cares), are written and directed by males, making any female actor who pitches some hilarious line, void.

Hell, maybe I'm slightly misogynistic; I don't know, but maybe, and secretly feel that woman cannot be funny in any way.

I have a good judge of what is funny, as I can make anyone laugh; ANYONE. Anybody who knows me in person, or has talked to me in some shape or form for a considerable amount of time, has larfed a good 'en. Whereas some people are goofy assholes who laugh at anything, just because they have no personality.

Catherine Tate isn't funny. Just before any sad sack mentions it.

Double post, but who gives a ****.

Humour is definitely subjective in a large area, but there are many things that will make anyone with a cheerful sense of humour laugh their tits off, it's non debatable.

If you told me something hilarious, which is a lot more probable considering you're not a teenage airhead, damn right I'd laugh, I'd have no reason not to.

I'll end with there are ZERO female comedians that have consistent funnies, and I've seen my fair share of them; if I didn't, I'd be an ass for starting this thread right?

Taking the most obvious example, stand-up comedy, I can think of several really funny commediennes - Victoria Wood and Jo Brand for instance. While 'being funny' isn't affected by gender, I often wonder why there aren't more female stand-up comediennes - most funny females are actresses.

Maybe it's some sort of discrimination (in this day and age, probably subconscious) in the comedy industry?

Jo Brand is the pinnacle of boring. Can't say I've even heard of the other women you mentioned, so I won't say anything.

Must agree with Kurogane, Jo Brand isnt great. And im not too fussed on Victoria Wood

I'm going to have to agree with the thread starter.

Most girls/women I know, aren't funny. Most of their jokes have to do with the situation, and even then, they aren't exactly funny.

Even in the odd occasion when they are funny, its not really funny compared to male jokes.

I prefer male comedians, and always will.

No. Simple as that. No woman has made me laugh. I'm not sexist. It's just that I've mever came across a woman that has made me guffaw merrily.
