Anyone here learning Japanese?

is anyone here learning japanese here?

simple enough question i guess.

i was just wondering about the demographic of anime watchers who are learning/have learnt japanese, when, to what degree, why etc.

---

after starting to teach myself for a while i decided it to be the best option at university. i definately played way too many fighting games growing up and still do, which are primarily made in japan. coupled with anime, i decreed japan sufficiently kakko ii (cool) enough to learn the language.

it seems to be the most diverse first world country in the world.

I wouldn't call Japan the most 'divese first world country in the world'. They're really old-fashioned.
I like Japan's animation & videogames etc, but I don't like their politics and culture.

Started learning more than three years ago. Passed the JLPT4 about two years ago, and have been returning intermittently every few months. I've recently embarked on learning Italian, so I doubt I'll be returning to study with heart until I discover I'm visiting Japan/living there/encounter a Japanese woman who wants to sex.

I've really just started learning, and after studying various(completely unrelated to each other) things after leaving school I've also ldecided I want to plunge in a study it a SOAS next year, which means I'll have to work extremely hard this year in order to insure I make it.

I wouldn't just say its just the anime related stuff though that led me to make this decision, I personally just find the whole culture in general fasinating, the good and the not so good. Modern Japan is a very interesting mix of old fashioned and modern, and its also just so different from over here! I done enough studying to know that I don't just want to study something that will lead to a secure and good career, I want to study something I have real interest in and just go with flow, in the end combining the various things I love together!

When you say diverse though what exactly do mean? I don't think Japans particularly ethnically diverse, and this actually slightly scares a mix raced person like me, although I would have thought it should be getting a bit more better these days.

I'm studying Japanese at Dublin City University, along with International Business. It's a horrible language to learn, really. Extremely difficult at times, and many of my lecturers (who've been studying the language for 30+ yeas) say they still have substantial difficulties with the language. It's satisfying once it all clicks together, but getting to that stage is hugely frustrating at times.

Also, the idea that Japan is a diverse country is pretty hilarious. Japan is all about conformity, probably moreso than any other first world country ... which would make it the LEAST diverse country, not the most diverse.

Looks like the conversation is over but I've been learning it for the past few years. Took a break recently and I'm heading back in September.

I could not disagree more strongly.

Maybe "horrible" is too strong a word. Learning of any kind is always satisfying to some degree, but do you not think Japanese is frustratingly difficult to learn at times?

Classical, perhaps, but modern Japanese is a wonderfully logical language. Learning English I wouldn't fancy, however!
