AnimEigo's next kickstarter: Otaku no Video Blu-ray

As an isolated consumer sure, races to the bottom are great.

As a participant in the kind of economy that results from races to the bottom, the outcome is not so great. Driving down prices ultimately drives down wages. Perhaps not here, but somewhere. That's why outsourcing is a thing and all our cheap stuff is produced by poorly paid people and few consumer items are produced in the UK any more.

For licensed properties, a race to the bottom is fine provided the drops in price are always met by at least a commensurate increase in sustained sales. If not, the profit margins become squeezed to the point that releasing anything other than the most popular properties may cease to be viable.

Anime is not in a boom period and there is no exponentially growing audience. Everyone wants a good deal, but people have to realise that a race to the bottom, to the same extent as we've seen in the general DVD market, would probably just end with English language anime publishers either going out of business or withdrawing from the market in the long run.
