Anime You wanted to like but don't

Full Metal Panic. It's like watching two different series. One minute Sagara is a deadly serious battle scared and experienced genius. And then he's a thick as pig-sh*t naive twonk. I actually like both bits, but just not mixed up in every other episode doses.

the second series..TSR is not so much like that..its far more darker and serious than the other series(not gonna include FUMOFFU). The only reason sagara became kinda clueless was because he had attended a school before(or been part of a 'normal' way of life before), but as he is a pro at combat..he knows whats what.

erm on topic: i can't really say..i tried FF:U..god what a waste of time that was. It was alright at first..then it just got kinda sickening and now i wonder why the heck i bothered to even watch it.

erm i liked Spirited Away..but in the end..i didn't find it as great as i had originally heard it was going to be.

I don't think there's any anime I've seen that I've wanted to like but don't except for Burst Angel and Kiddy Grade (I was kinda thinking it'd be crap before I saw it anyway ). I have all of both on R2 DVD from MVM, only things I've ever thought of getting rid of (and my brother's FFU discs, not even gonna watch those cause I know it's crap).

One Piece - just can't seem to get into it, the main character just annoys me, one day i shall try to get into it again.

Evangelion and all the Ghibli movies, Evangelion was a huge let down.. all the hype over it and once I'd watched it it was like the Power Rangers for the first 23 episodes (big baddies come and destroy everything, heroes go kill it) and the last few episodes were a complete WTF?? and the whole series turned into WTF??

I watched Spirited Away after all the hype too and was let down by that too, was just plain boring, Mononoke was okay for parts but was still only average at best and I attempted to watch some on film four but was just bored to near death.

How can some people be so critical of the ghibli movies.
Unless you wnt into watching them with the hope of seeing guns and action.
Obviously you dont have to like them all but spirited away was anything but boring..
It was a great movie and one of my faves.
And I think comparing eva to power rangers is just plain crazy.

It deserves alot more credit than that.
But I dont blame you for having your opinion,I just love these so much that I didint like what you said.
But thats life.

Because some people will hate anything thats popular, i don't mean him, but there are fans who will just trash something because its simply popular.

DEAD.
Even speaking as someone who likes it, it's a very slow and overlong movie. My closest friends who nonetheless don't have interest in anime suddenly wanted to watch it, and my reaction was: err... you know what, I'd rather we watched something else.

The 'hype' surrounding Spirited Away is pretty much the animation oscar and the validation that gives to people to hold it aloft as a 'superior' film. Really, people just have to ask themselves whether they would seek out every other big prize winner and love it: Oscars are not an indication of universal applicability, just undeniable worth to a certain group of people that may or may not extend beyond the room where a handful of judges cooked up the idea of handing out the award.

But Princess Mononoke. Now, if you can't enjoy that, you are dead inside :p besides, I hardly see where the perception of 'hype' is with the movie.

I just found myself wandering off, I was watching it and the whole time thinking, hmm I must put up those shelves or such nice weather I should go for a walk or well this is a splendid series but maybe clawing my eyes out with a philips screw driver would be more enjoyable

Sorry to all the Lied fans but for me the series was weighed, measured and found wanting..... thats right I said it

Now, screw you guys... I'm going home

I actually prefered Spirited away.
I found that I have re-watched that far more times than Mononoke
And when a movie is as beautifully animated and with such amazingly detailed backgrounds as Spirited away a little overlong isint the end of the world.
But thats my opinion.
Oh and I agree with your assesment of what oscars are and the effect they have on what people buy, but Oscar or not there arent many more Universally appealing movies than Spirited away.

But thats my opinion.
Not arguing or anything.*grits teeth*

Some people seemed to have got the wrong end of the stick about this thread. It's not about anime you hate, or anime that failed to live up to the hype. It's about anime that ticked all the right boxes But failed to grab you. eg GitS had mecha, cyborg's, macheavellian politics, (semi-)plausible physics, and a large and intresting cast, which are all things i really like, yet despite this found the series to be fairyly uninspiring. It had it's moments, and there were parts i really liked but as a whole... no.

I think it depends if you have a respect/adoration for animation as a whole.

For someone who just likes movies, they wouldn't really care if it had won/been praised by a certain group of people, they simply wouldn't hold an interest to it because they don't like that whole genre of movie.

Voices of a Distant Star and Place Promised in Our Early Days (or whatever the name is). I've mentioned not likeing them before, but I'm rpetty passionste about it. They pretty I'll admit, but they're also boring and populated with characters I can't tolerate.

Spirited Away was alright, it just has 45 mins worth of random stuff in the middle which didn't make here nor there in terms of the central plot. (that said I don't dislike it or hate it in the least)

Oh and Love Hina can burn as well...
