Howdy! I've not been in to anime for very long. I first started buying anime movies this Christmas, starting with stuff like Spirited Away and Ghost in the Shell. Since then I've become a massive fan of all Studio Ghibli films (or at least, those released by Optimum over here) and I would rate some of them amongst my favourite movies of all time.

My question is this: Do you all enjoy anime a great deal, but when it comes down to it, are your favourite films of all time live action films, or would you put anime films in amongst your top tens and top twenties?

In amongst my top movies would be Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell and a possibly a few others, but I wondered if the same applied to many other people. Admittedly, asking this question on an anime discussion board is going to lead to some skewed results, but it'll still be interesting to see.

As I'm quite new, some part of this might not work, but I'll try and add a poll to this topic as well.

I don't watch that many films live-action/anime or otherwise (I much prefer an anime TV series). But Princess Mononoke and Perfect Blue definately make my top 10 films of all time.

(Anime) Princess Mononoke
(Anime) Kiki's Delivery Service
(Anime) Grave of the Fireflies
(LiveAc) Aliens
(LiveAc) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
(WAnim) South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
(Anime) Tokyo Godfathers
(Anime) Millenium Actress
(WAnim) Monster's Inc
(Anime) My Neighbour Totoro

I'd say that's my top ten. 6/10 Anime.

I dont count any anime in my top ten films, because I dont particularly like any anime movies (I much prefer series) or I dont like them more than I like my top ten movies (I like films as much as I like anime, they both interest me equally).

I'll try and think of a top 10, I'm extremely picky

1 ) Heavenly Creatures
2 ) A Tale Of Two Sisters (Korean)
3 ) Voice (Korean)
4 ) Memento Mori (Korean)
5 ) Perfect Blue (ANIME)
6 ) Red Eye (Korean)
7 ) Battle Royale (Japanese)
8 ) Kill Bill vol 1
9 ) A.I.
10 ) Death Becomes Her

Those that did not make it: Ring, Aliens, Serial Mom, X-Men, The Others, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice

The only anime film worth considering is Perfect Blue in my opinion - it blows the rest out of the water. But when I look again at my list, I realise I have sadistic tastes. Oh well! :D

I'll list my top films I suppose

The Crow (USA)
Edward Scissorhands(USA)
Swingers (USA)
Battle Royale (Japan)
Hana-Bi (Japan)
Casshern (Japan)
Cable Guy (USA)
Nightmare Before Christmas (USA)
Versus (Japan)
Oldboy (Korea)

Probably the only anime movie that comes close to penetrating that list is End of Evangelion, but I still dont love it more than the above films im afraid.

Ah Ill list mine too I suppose to show where Mononoke and Perfect Blue fit in.

1) Memento Mori (South Korean Live Action)
2) A Tale Of Two Sisters (South Korean Live Action)
3) Wishing Stairs (South Korean Live Action)
4) Pefect Blue (Anime)
5) Alien Resurrection (American Live Action)
6) Princess Mononoke (Anime)
7) A Nightmare Before Christmas (American Animation)
8 ) Pulp Fiction (American Live Action)
9) Battle Royale (Japanese Live Action)
10) Pocahontas <-- no idea how to spell it (American Animation)

1. Chungking Express (l/action)
2. The End of Evangelion (anime)
3. Cowboy Bebop (anime)
4. Howl's Moving Castle (anime)
5. Keep the Aspidistra Flying (l/action)
6. Lost in Translation (l/action)
7. Whisper of the Heart (anime)
8. Naussica (anime)
9. The Twilight Samurai (l/action)
10. Rocky (l/action)

I couldn't say what order, but this is a list of my favourite 10:

Aliens
Memento
Perfect Blue (anime)
Ninja Scroll (anime)
Ghost in the Shell (anime)
The Matrix (tho the sequels were mostly pretentious crap)
Shawshank Redemption
Goldeneye
Leon
The Crow

There are probably others I can't think of but thats pretty much it!

This is hardly a definate list; more or less what immediately come to mind:

Ping Pong (Japanese live action)
Fargo (Canadian live action)
City of God (Brazilian live action)
Nausicaa (Japanese anime)
24 Hour Party People (British live action)
Old Boy (Korean live action)
Run Lola Run (German live action)
Evil Dead 2 (American live action)
Dawn of the Dead (American live action)
The Thing (American live action)

Obviously not much anime in this list. Most Ghibli stuff and Satoshi Kon moviesa are good enough to be up there, but these are my personal favourites.

Anime doesn’t even factor in my top ten -- Patlabor and Metropolis come close, but I still wouldn’t place them above any of the movies I’ve outlined below.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) (American live action)
The Station Agent (American live action)
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (South Korean live action)
Dead or Alive 2 (Japanese live action)
Dog Day Afternoon (American live action)
Delicatessen (French live action)
Garden State (American live action)
Sonatine (Japanese live action)
Last Life in the Universe (Ruang rak noi nid mahasan) (Thai/Japanese live action)
Sleepy Hollow (American live action)

Infernal Affairs (Japanese live action)
Akira (Anime)
Streetfighter the movie (Anime)
Ghost In The Shell (Anime)
Downfall (German Live Action)
Infernal Affairs 2 (Japanese Live Action)
Battle Royale (Japanese Live Action)
A Bittersweet Life (Korean live action)
Ninja Scroll (Anime)
Batman Begins (American Live Action)

This is my list so far but it's always changing lol.

yes anime films are in my top ten

Star Wars (Live action)
Ghostbusters (Live action)
Dawn of the Dead (Live action)
Death and Rebirth (anime)
Kung Pow enter the fist (Live action)
Dragonball Path to power (Anime)
Shaun of the Dead (Live action)
Batman (Live action)
Sleepy Hollow (Live Action)
Wayne's World (Live Action)

I love anime but even though Akira and the original Appleseed movie got me into anime, I wouldn't put them in my top ten. No anime movie has ever had me watch it so many times that I know half the script like Spaceballs, Star Wars or the Princess Bride.

That said, if they were to ever release a Full Metal Panic Fumoffu movie then my opinion would surely change.

Interesting how so many anime fans watch (and like) films in pretty much every other language. I could probably stick one or two anime titles in my top ten, but most of it would be non-anime.

My 'top ten' varies from day to day depending on mood but it's usually a 50/50 mixture of anime and live action. Since I've got into anime I've been drawn more towards world cinema than I used to be but that could just be attributed to getting older, more cynical and picky with what I watch!

I agree most of the nation don't really like reading subs during their movies but I have no problem at all with it.

I have a friend with such a problem, he can't stand subtitles. Obviously not much of a reader.

Its got to the point with my DVD collection where I have more foreign language titles than I do english/US ones. Perhaps I should be ashamed of my unpatriotic behaviour lol!
