Anime on TV shocker (It's Metropolis on Film4)

Oh, I was interested in that. Was about to buy it, but I'll watch it on Film4 now.

Has anyone watched Metropolis before hand and if so, what was your opinion on it?
 
I watched it a year ago on DVD at University and I enjoyed it alot considering it had been a while since I watched an anime back then.

I don't really know how to descibe it, I guess its an action/drama with some fantastic art.

Also in one of the later scenes they play a Ray Charles song which did surprise me.

I'll second that; I actually really like those older designs, it's just feels slightly odd when they're placed alongside modern CGI. Think I owe this one a rewatch anyhow, it's been a while since I last saw it.

I think the older character design was giving it an older feel trying to be some kind of homage to the original Metropolis film.
 
It was an Osamu Tezuka manga originally (inspired simply by the poster for the Fritz Lang movie), and was created way back when, hence the old fashioned character designs.
 
Note that the film is very different from Tezuka and Lang's works. Certain themes and motifs naturally descend from their original creations, but the main narrative thrust, viz that involving Tima, is very much of Rintaro's doing.

Yeah, I'd heard something about this. Its just a shame that the retro vibe is interrupted by CG buildings and such. Had they used conventional animation for the whole thing (even if it were digital rather than cell based) there would have been a stronger sense of cohesion to the animation. That said, for a film centering around the consequences of our technological advances I suppose it's strangely fitting that the clash between old and new be represented in the visuals.

The computer elements aren't bad. In fact they're extremely impressive, but their distraction prevents comfortable involvement and suspense of disbelief.
 
Not really a fan of the movie, and it's been on TV plenty of times before. Ghibli complainers should note that it's only on because it's Otomo, who was Ch4's anime sugar daddy well before Miyazaki.

The one-shot Manga is really rather strange and almost completely unrelated. At least, they did well to drop the 'Mikimaus Waltdisneus' evil rat (main) plotline and the apparently pointless sex-swapping abilities of the robot girl. But I really didn't care for the robots versus humans stuff that replaced it, and the mix of 3D animation with 2D doesn't work as well as the making of on the second disk claims.

They're not "old fashioned", they're just Tezuka's style :p

I already own Metropolis on DVD (it's fantastic!) but it'll be nice to see it on TV as I switch between channels :]
