Anime Network on the fall?

incase anyone was wondering where Emma and Stu were last night i have found the answer posted by Emma on the sites forums

Hey guys and so, so, so sorry for our silence.
As the keen eyed amongst you will have spotted - Stu and I were absent from tonight's show. Thank you so much for the sweet comments; you know how much we love you all, right? *hug*
Firstly, my huge and profound apologies for our recent silence. It's been a period of change for one reason or another at AN. If it were up to us, believe me, you know we'd have been saying more, but - as often with these things - it's not, and we have to of course respect the system. As such, our hands have been a little tied. ^_^
Okay, this is going to be tough to say, and I am deeply sorry that there's been no official announcement, but it looks like it falls to me to let you know (since the show has already gone out) that Stu and I will not be returning to ANUK
Well, we're of course here in spirit, and the anime lurve will never leave us - hehe...but not in the way that we have been up until now.
Before any conclusions are leapt to, I can't of course say much about the situation at ANUK at the moment (as there's only so much I know myself) but rest assured that we were not fired - no one has fallen out and viewing support has been great (thank you all SOOOOO much!)...more information should hopefully be posted soon by the people with the authority and knowledge to share, but I wanted to of course respond in some way to the questions about tonight as you all more than deserve some information.
You're all awesome and we have had such an amazing time sharing ANUK with you. Long live anime in the UK! RAWK!

so is this the end of AN in the UK? or just a new direction?

New presenters?, No presenters? or support to AC. I'd rather the latter to be totally truthful.

I never really watched AN, I found it awkward, For one I would have to record the entire block, And I got confused when it went Saturday and Sunday then it started airing every day of the week. =\

"Long live anime in the UK! RAWK!"

Hang on, are these the presenters they have? Because if they are I can't say I'm all that fussed about losing them. I never liked those segments anyway.

i'm more worried about

that says to me, some big announcement they can't speak of

maybe it's a good thing, like when they extended the show? but not being able to speak about it does make it sound like it could be bad :?

Maybe it has something to do with it been shown on Proppeller?

Im gonna be upset if emma and stu dont come back, i think they made watching it more intresting, i prefer AN then AC.

OK, this is sounds worrying.

It's either cost-cutting measures to eliminate any unneeded "expenditure" (clearly though, we need to be sensitive about this seeing as people have lost their jobs) or the first sign that AN is closing up shop for good. The whole deal seems to be that they are renting their time-slots from Propeller TV, so if they are renting on a monthly/three monthly basis, then we could just see them disappear once that contract expires.

To be honest, looking at this, you have to question either or not the launch of Anime Central has further diluted their audience to unsustainable levels. I know it's unlikely to happen, but it would be great to see the two channels join together and offer the best of both worlds.

Looking at it objectively, Anime Central has better series with proven mainstream appeal (e.g. Cowboy Bebop, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell and FMA). Other than Neon Genesis Evangelion, ADV are always facing an up-hill struggle to attract casual fans who aren't into "otaku" things like Azumanga Daioh or Pani Poni Dash!. I'm surprised they haven't gone for exciting action \ fantasy anime like RahXephon, Hellsing and Last Exile.

can i just point out Emma has said her post that they were not "Fired" so i assume they have either walked out themselves (Volentarly or otherwise) or are still part of ADV in some form or another

Also both are attending London Expo, so maybe our reporters can find something out then ^^

What worried me is the fact that as she said in her post AN have made no official announcement about it, sorta like it's "Carry on and pretend they never existed"

anyway if anyone wants to read the full post and see the responce check out the thread here

other things i've noticed of late was the fact that yesterday they decided to show a double episode of Azumanga instead of replacing Pani poni dash with something else, and that the website seems to have fallen out of interest lately (the "what's on" section hasn't worked in weeks)

I'm taking a wild guess because I know pretty much nothing about how licences work but it might have something to do with that maybe? In the UK Hellsing and Last Exile are in fact owned by ADV but in the US both titles are owned by Geneon. Maybe it has something to do with that?

hasn't Last Exile shown on anime network in the US though?

Further to that, owning a DVD licence for a region does not automatically mean the holder has TV rights. A good case in point would by Ghost in the Shell: SAC where the TV rights actually fell to Bandai (BEEZ) rather than Manga, who of course released the DVDs.

Stu has made a comment atlast, though nothing new, pretty similar to Emma's

Hi All
Well as you all may well have noticed this week marked the end of Emma and I's presenting run. I know Emma has posted her feelings earlier and to be honest I will keep mine short as I dont want to repeat anything she has said.
I would just like to say that for any presenter 37 episodes is quite an achievement and one that couldnt have been made without the hard work and support of a lot of people, I won't name drop as they know who they are, my heartfelt thanks go to them.
I would also like to thank each and everyone one that has shown their support to this project, you have all been fantastic and made working on this project incredibley gratifying on a personal and proffessional level, so thank you.
Over the last few days I may appear to have not been online but I have been and have been following your comments and one in particular has stuck out to me, "The Faces Of Anime in the UK". Whilst I must admit to being extremely flattered and touched by such comments as these, I have to say that the true faces of Anime in this country are all of you. By you, I mean those who watch the shows, buy them on DVD, Cosplay, attend events, all of you who do your part no matter how small to further the cause of Anime in this country. It is my belief that if all of you continue to do this and continue to demand the best from those who produce the product and also in turn get the word out, then it wont be long before the genre gets the boost it needs in this country.
Anyway before I get all emotional, I will wrap this up and say and at the risk of repeating Emma, we will both still be online and furthering the cause (www.dtrn.co.uk is my site featuring anime and manga reviews) whenever the opportunity presents itself. Oh and I have two more people to thank, Emma and Hugh, thank you doesnt seem enough for allowing me to work and write with you two.
So thats my piece, thank you, once again for allowing us the honour of entertaining you for 37 shows.
May life bring you all you desire and of course Anime!!

ADV may have struck an agreement with another channel. From what I can gather from the two statements that ADV will continue to air anime in the UK but perhaps through specialist channels like AnimeCentral, Animax or any other 3rd party.

The ratings for Animecentral have been good, not excellent but neverless impressive for a channel with limited reach. If they are planning to expand it would be the nail in the coffin for Anime Network on the other hand Sony are prepping their Animax channel for a UK launch and they have a huge back catalogue, so there may be no place for ADV's Anime Network.

Plus there was only so much they could earn on a non profit channel.

Business wise it would be much better for them to enter a partnership with AC as it would be mutually beneficial to both parties, it would remove competition and give both parties access to more resources to improve their service.

This would also strengthen them against the thread of new entrants in this case Animax

I agree, i would like to see that AC could be come a channel featuring shows from all distrubrutors (or who ever holds the tv liscences), i know in some cases healthy competition can be benifical, but i would like it if i could get all my tv anime in the same place :)

I thought animax was only coming out as a pay per view type channel?

Yeah as things stand AC have shows from Manga, Beez, Revelations and Metrodome so ADV and MVM are the only ones missing but they are the two major ones.

AC will probably need at least one of those two to sign on to continue to show the best of anime released in the UK. ADV may have been afraid of MVM signing on with AC just leaving them out on their own trying to compete with a channel backed by all their other competitors and thus they have have decided that it was better to join AC before they where shut out.

This of course is all conjecture for now as their is no evidence or even strong hints to back it up.

I might be the only one with this opinion but I found them annoying, though truthfully not as annoying as the same series of adverts cycled randomly for the whole break (As in Anime Central). I was sick of FMA just because of seeing the same annoying advert for the whole time it was airing. Didn't even have Winry in the ad.

Depends what they're planning on putting in their place, perhaps some other presenters would be nice.

AN have shows from ADV, or did last time I checked, but seing some from MVM would be nice. Personally Beez is my favourite, and then MVM, but merely due to the kind of shows they distribute.

Haven't tried to order anything from Beez directly but MVM was far better than ADV at distribution. The series of makeshift invoices I got from ADV and long wait for the first dispatch was soarly unprofessional.

This may end up being a good thing or bad thing.

Anime network would probaly try and get another channel to air it on or even have their own independent channel like anime central which I doubt. The bad could be its going down! but I don't know what going on so I just have to hope that it turns for the best. :)

Well seeing as the US economy is in a nosedive and ADV is a US based company it's no surprise that this sort of thing has happened. I'm sure Stu and Emma were aware that it couldn't last forever and have other jobs to go to. To be fair they did get a slagging by a few so called viewers, and I wouldn't doubt that someone at ADV HQ had seen that if they were keeping a close watch on the UK channel as I would have expected them to do. I sincerely hope this isn't going to turn out to be yet another anime on UK TV bubble that bursts all too soon.
