Anime Limited Survey on Sub Only Movies

Any question on prices is a bit difficult to answer when I don't know how much money I will have available next year. But I answered assuming I had a realistic, but plentiful, supply.

Don't care about dubs as I wouldn't watch them anyway, so anything related to that is irrelevant to me.

This is one of those that is case-by-case for me. The "dub voucher" thing sounds incredibly risky to me. I'm really not sure how the logistics of being able to provide a dub later would even work if this were to happen, otherwise I'd actually quite like the idea.

I like on-disc extras so I voted for them.
 
Pretty easy question for me really, I'd be more than happy to see them releasing things sub-only. The only reason I ever really need a dub is if I'm watching the movie with my younger brother (who hasn't got the attention to sit and read subs), or family in general, but other than that I rarely touch a dub.

Soundtracks as an extra are really the most important thing to me, especially knowing the types of works Anime Limited are picking up. Makoto Shinkai works for example have brilliant soundtracks that I really, really love, so stuff like that is very important to me. Artwork books and stuff are nice too, but the soundtracks are of more importance.
 
I voted for Yes on Sub-Only release and Yes if they can allow a way to get a dub through the Sub-Only release if possible.

I also put Soundtracks on most wanted when it comes to extras and a price tag of £30-34.
 
I'd much rather have a dub included but if the film is good then I'd take a sub only release. As for the extras, I'm not particularly bothered by them.
 
As someone who watches anime almost exclusively in subbed form this was a very easy questionnaire for me. In fact the only question I even had to think about was the price. My instinct was to tick the highest price bracket, but then I thought about the impact it would have on what I could buy each month and decided on the £25-29 option. Of course this changes depending on the anime in question. I would happily pay over £50 for a special edition of Patema Inverted for example, but only around £25 for something I know little about such as Hal.
As for extras, I like quality packaging above all else and would like it to sit on my shelf putting all those Amarays to shame. Next best for me is an art booklet and on-disc extras, and everything else I can take or leave. I would never use a 'dub voucher' so that's of no interest to me.
 
So if we add 2+2 together on the back of the drrr/gl tread....sub only movies Limited to X copies in great art boxes and with extras with regular dub combipacks somewhere down the line for everyone else. Im game. Gimme!

Sub only sets will only sell so many so i think making these limited SE sets may help them in the long run.
 
Tricky, and for some reason I'm more inclined to allow a sub only series compared to a sub only film, generally as sub only series are those niche titles that are unlikely to ever be released unless it's as subbed only.

The idea of being able to get a dub version later is nice, and would make me far more likely to go for a sub only movie

What would of been quite nice for a survey like this is a question similar to the price one, but asking a) how much you'd pay for a basic movie release and b) how much extra you think art cards/boxes/video extras you would be prepared to pay on top of the basic price. Get a feel for how much people really value certain features.
 
Filled in the survey. My answers were - happy with sub only, price range of £25-£29 (hard to select a price as it depends on an anime by anime basis and whether it is a movie or series). As for the extras I put soundtracks and art booklet* as very important, video extras and exclusive box art as quite important while art cards and voucher for a dub I put as don't care.

Pity there wasn't an option to rate the various type of packaging such as cases and digipacks.


* I don't expect both a cd and an art booklet with every release but some shows have good music which would benefit having a soundtrack disc while some have great designs which would suit an art booklet so it is a case of one or the other.
 
I don't watch dubs so my answers didn't require much thought. I assume the dub voucher idea is for when Anime Limited picks something up which has no US release yet, then the US announces a dub when it's too late to include it. It's protection against the Durarara!! trap Beez fell into (and the Blue Exorcist situation in Manga's case), right?

It's a very interesting issue. To insist upon dubs or nothing is to live forever trapped in the shadow of America's industry, where we don't get any anime that isn't already readily available with in a legal, translated release. It sounds as though Anime Limited is exploring ways to dabble in more interesting licenses without disappointing their customers when they get picked up elsewhere later.

I still said no though, as I don't watch dubs.

Video extras and music are the most important extras to me.

I went with the music and video extras as well.

Anime Limited, here's something else consider with your future releases: an isolated musical score track. Basically it allows you watch the feature with no dialogue or sound effects, just the music and the musical cues. It worked a treat on the dvd release of the Escaflowne movie.

Quite a few standard US movie blu rays do it too. Fright Night has a fantastic soundtrack much loved by fans so the bd release acted on that.

For me i voted quality packaging and artbook as most important. Then soundtrack and art cards. video extras and dub vouchers are the least important to me as i rarely, if ever watch extras or listen in English.

Anything between £25-£34 is my preference. A single movie shouldn't be more than this, but with movies I adore, like Tokyo Godfathers, id pay more.
 
With soundtracks, I figure one'd probably get a lot further a lot quicker just putting them on Itunes/Play Music if possible.

I mean it's not as if it being converted to mp3s and hoiked on Google Play Music Player (or Itunes if you're silly) is not the final fate of about 99.9% of all CDs anyway.

Now, now Conan, there's still some sentimental value left in having physical media.
 
Yeah I agree Conan. Admittedly I like having a collection to look at but living on my own now in a flat, space is a precious commodity so only blu-rays are kept in their cases on shelves, everything else is bunged in to giant CD wallets.
 
That was incredibly easy to answer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a sub purist but the quality of dubs nowadays is quickly declining - partially due to Sentai/Funi etc. all using the same bloody regulars for EVERYTHING.
I'd love a good quality Sub Only release - especially if we go the Aniplex route here and have the Japanese BD quality + Extras. That would be pretty cool.
Price wise, it's hard to say. I'd base it on a title by title basis, but for the most part I'd probably be willing to pay towards the higher end of the price range.

Alternately, I don't know if this is as viable here as it is in America, but I wouldn't mind an extremely Limited import release like Aniplex did with Madoka/Funi did with GiTS:Arise.
