UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Don't AL usually have a summer sale in mid-August? 🤔 Have they ever skipped that in previous years?

I don't have a record of earlier years, but in 2023 it was called the Back to School Sale and started 8 September, and in 2024 it was called the Summer Sale and started 16 August, with the coupon emails going out on the 12th.

We'll be sending out a proper e-mail to everyone who has signed up about this later, but I'm going to tell you folks early...

Anime Unlimited members now get their discount applied at checkout AUTOMATICALLY! No more forgetting to add your discount, forgetting what it is, typing it wrong etc etc, as long as you're logged in and an active member we'll handle the rest for you at the checkout.

For reference, this is what you should see at checkout now (as an example):

I was an Anime Unlimited member for a year recently. The list of perks mentioned a yearly magazine, but I never received one.

I don't really mind, I only signed up for the discounts, but I'm just curious: did anyone else ever receive anything like that?

I only ask because AL have hosted some outstanding blog posts over the years, and it occurs to me that the magazine might actually have been interesting to read.

Yeah the rise in printing costs stopped the SLA magazine from happening last year which was a shame. I do wonder if there'd be appetite on their side for doing a digital version? They could still produce it but send it out to Anime Unlimited subscribers as a PDF or something.

Well, that's intriguing. I seem to recall this film seemingly having a separate rightsholder to the rest of the Ghibli films for some reason, but I did expect that Elysian would have got them all like Studio Canal did before them.

Anyway, undoubtedly one of the greatest animated films ever made IMO but I am curious what the appetite is for another Blu-Ray release of this film in (realistically) 2026 when one would have thought that the Ghibli films would be prime material for an UHD upgrade. I'd only otherwise be lured into double dipping if Anime Ltd managed to achieve what has so far seemed unachievable for any Western label and actually get some decent extras for a Studio Ghibli release.

A translation of Isao Takahata's Thoughts While Making Movies would be top of my wishlist - or at least a relevant excerpt. There was a conversation between Takahata and original author Akiyuki Nosaka in that book, which actually got translated and reprinted in an issue of Animerica. It's out there to be found already but would be great if it could be more widely available. I was away to say the same goes for the original short story, but it looks like Penguin are actually bringing that back into print with a new translation next month!

Any of the Sensou Douwa specials that aired in the 00s would be great to see as extras - most were written by Nosaka and are also war themed.

Also, on the subject of Takahata, any of Heidi / Anne of Green Gables / 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother / Gauche the Cellist would be particularly fabulous. All still MIA on English-friendly releases. 3000 Leagues was restored just this year I think.
