UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

It still wouldn't be my preferred way of packaging evangelion (that would be the Japanese blu ray box, just the right amount of mysterious in there) but I'm starting to appreciate it more.
Totally with you on that, I mean how gorgeous is this set in its minimalist potency:

But yeah the AL set is also beautiful especially with the art cards, I've always wanted some nice posters of EoE and these will go some way towards fulfilling that desire. And though I really like the laserdisc design and art, personally I would've loved this set itself to be enclosed in, I don't know the practicalities of this, but some high-end slipcase with negative space artwork like the JP set for the exterior, as that would look really classy in my opinion. Or maybe I just want the JP set as well...

On another layman note, how difficult would it have been for AL, Madman & GKIDS to have coordinated the design of these sets? Or was it more or less dictated by Khara?

Straight up posting pornography with that picture, like, hardcore stuff. Arousing, to be sure.

Yeah, that's the golden standard in Eva presentation 🤤 which is why the French edition is very appealing to me, as there's much less visual clutter, so to speak.

I have no authority to answer your question, of course but khara seem protective of the IP (rightfully so, mind), so I'd wager they dictated at least part of the process? All editions (KOR/FR/UK) seen so far seem to be going for the same size, for instance.

Would be interesting to get more info on that, for sure. It's still a mindlowing feat of logistics to get this specific release coordinated across three different continents.

I already have the JP BD box (and the matching DVD one 😅) so I really like this take on it instead of getting a clone; it actually really increases the nostalgia for me since back at that time I was avidly collecting all things Eva. It's been a long time since I've regularly laid my eyes on some of those visuals.

All of the talk of Netflix dub versus ADV dub takes me back to my own chaotic initial viewing. I was buying the UK VHS tapes as they came out (dub-only, which was par for the course in the industry at the time) but they were being released at fairly wide intervals (1-2 months per two-episode tape, or something like that) and the further into the show I got, the more anxious I would get for each new volume. And they weren't always easy to find outside of big cities! It should be noted that I personally don't enjoy dubs for a multitude of reasons, not least because my hearing sucks and I need on-screen text. So when I accompanied my parents to France for a day I spent the entire time tracking down the French version of the last few episodes. I was delighted to find that the French tapes had more episodes per tape and they were Japanese subbed in French rather than dubbed, so I got to finish the series 'early' that way and was really excited. The fact that I'd randomly switched languages halfway through my viewing barely seemed to matter any more than the fact that watching with a language you sort of half-understand (French) hardsubbed on top of the Japanese was very confusing. The tapes only played in black and white too because my VHS player didn't support French SECAM. But it was totally worth it. I finished my UK VHS collection eventually and got to see the rest in colour. Then I upgraded to a version with the original language and got rid of all of those tapes I'd loved so much. I don't even want to think about how many times I've bought this show by now, hahaha.

I also really like the coordinated release, since it means that we losers in the UK get to see the news about our version at the same time it's being talked about everywhere else instead of playing the weird chess game of trying to work out which version to buy. It's rare to see the industry experiment on this scale.

Yeah I'm glad I haven't been booted by the mods yet heh. I mean, uuuhh it's meant to be art, yeah I'm going with that, art ...

So greedy! I'm just very jealous and I do really like the look of that DVD one in red, but for the latter I've only seen it online in a standard edition boxset so assuming that's the one you're referring to and not some fancy translucent red set like that CE blu ray one.

Aw man, love reading stories of how people got into Eva back in the day and it's funny how it wasn't a linear experience for a lot of us. The first episode I watched of Eva was 01 vs. 03 on a Saturday morning on a kids slot. It was almost mythical at the time. I was entranced but didn't have the means to look into it further.

Then a pal of mine gave me a tape he recorded on cable tv with like 3 episodes with a Brazilian Portuguese dub (omg~~~~) that I watched over and over and over. This was years later. It had the episode where Shinji gets absorbed into the sphere angel and the one where the angel gets into Nerv HQ and Shinji fights it off.

Only later would I watch the entire series but I didn't really have a critical eye at the time.

There's a fancy translucent red set too, they match. It's this one (I couldn't get a good picture of the perspex boxes due to reflections, sorry, but the porn is here Amazon | 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン TV放映版 ARCHIVES OF EVANGELION DVD BOX | アニメ ). There's also another DVD set in red but I only owned that briefly before upgrading to the BD because its case was too annoying. Apologies for the inquisitive cat.

All I will say that if Andrew doesn't use the stacks he gets from this release to license War in the Pocket, I'll be travelling up to Glasgow... mainly because it's the easiest route when driving to Skye. Still, I'll make sure to glare at some random buildings

And I'm sure there will still be some cash left over for those 4K restorations of Future Boy Conan andThe Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon while he's at it 😜

I'm hoping we hear something about War in the Pocket before the end of the year; it's pretty short, so it's probably one of the easiest Gundams to get out while they're also busy with Eva.

The Ultimate edition doesn't hit as hard for me just because I have the laser discs but regardless the art is great, evidently, it sold out in record time. There is something baller tho about the Japanese blu-ray set, the flex of just having this plain box with nothing but the title, they could have plastered it with amazing artwork of rei and made easy money, but you know what this is, now pay respect and open your wallet.

How much for the cat and the blue ray boxset because I gladly take both.

Ps I'm only joking.

Heheh and I thought I was posting pornography, that red dvd case is arguably even nicer than the blue one (& very EoE). I'm so very jealous...

I saw a few copies at Virgin megastores back at uni in the very early 00s but then, uuuuh...had some online "friends" "share" their copies with me. Bought the manga EoE DVD straight after. Then it was on to that lovely tin set, whilst trying to get more kicks from the then incomplete manga. Got bored of waiting for that to finish (and only just picked up the remaining volumes a couple of years back), but by then the excitement of the newly announced Rebuilds came. Was very much shocked the latest movie would be coming so soon to us after the Japanese release (going by the ongoing gap just for Heaven's Feel III for example) so was very much in with the legion of fans with huge anticipation for Friday 13th.

Now to look forward to the hope of a future AL UE for the Rebuilds! For me, no Evangelion UE can now be complete without the Rebuilds. Shame about the licencing restrictions etc

I'll raise by taking the cat, the blu ray & the dvd boxset. Am almost certainly not joking... Or at least not until after I've checked the price, looked in my wallet, and non-chalantly walked away whilst whistling & sobbing to myself.

I'm assuming the packaging will be similar to the Ghost in the Shell SAC UE. Looks to be around the same size.

When I watched Evangelion I skipped Fly Me To The Moon every single time.

Evangelion has a dub? Also, what does ADV mean?

Safe to say, I'm happy to wait for the cheaper editions. I do love the design though.

I like you and your lack of **** given. You can be my new friend, since with CitizenGeek gone (RIP) I do need friends on here.

The first time I saw the design of this Eva UE, my mind was taken back to the £100 GitS SAC square. I sold it since I could not find anywhere to put it. Then, I got the Xenoblade CE, which turned out to be another square the exact same size.

I don't know the person responsible for these square designs but I do have a stick I'd like the originator to sit on.

ADV is an anime company that one sold £1 single volumes in desperado sales, long before AL did xmas sales. They also licensed a lot of crap anime, such as Excel Saga and Gad Guard. Evangelion only thing they had that wasn't shite. I think?.... lets go with that.

By the way, for reasons beyond my understanding the platinum DVDs are very valuable on eBay. As valuable as this UE, in fact. Think it's time to play 4D Chess: sell DVDs for same/maybe make profit. Get the Ultimate Square. Sell Ultimate Square. Get CE can fit on shelf. And then polish it, proud of self.

I remember when I ordered a Platinum dvd set like a decade ago and it was a little dented so I sent it back and bought another, should have bought another and kept both lol, gold dust now.

Also that Xenoblade CE came with a vinyl so thats cool!

...it looks like the monado!

I remember when I was nicer and, having acquired a spare import Eva platinum art box, I gave it away on here. Art box alone prob worth £50, now. I wish I'd got the R2 platinum tin, dented or no, but alas...

I was momentarily confused if I'd got a different Xenoblade CE, but you're right: a vinyl is in there, which is still sealed since I got nuffin to play it on. Explains the shape of the box, does that. Does also make one ponder why GitS/Eva are squares as don't think either come with vinyls, and giant sqaure+Bluray shelves go together not. A mystery~
