UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Think I will wait for a cheaper edition even if its a while off. The Ultimate edition is too much for me anyway. Its a shame AL don't have the movies.
While I get your point, licensing wise I don't think it would be possible have the original content and the Rebuild content (and people have forgotten another series also) altogether. King Records handles Neon Genesis Evangelion while NTV I believe handles the Rebuild of Evangelion, so it's probably too much committee/distributor faff for Khara to sort out.

Surely we’re nust waiting for the rights to expire with FUNI?
I reckon it's going to be an irregular order. We'll probably get 3.33+1.11 from Anime Limited and slowly get the others bit by bit. Their name is in the credits which can't be a coincidence.

Thinking about it I don’t think the UE would be the only way to get the ADV content. Why would they shoot themselves in the foot when it’s a key USP, and why wouldn’t they market the UE is the only way like they did for SDBD and Gundam Seed because being vague helps no one and it will lead controversy come Aug 30 whatever way it goes (esp if the UE is then OOP).
Having looked at the Evangelion AL site, the only part that mentions exclusivity with the Ultimate Edition are the paperweight and ID card with lanyard as they were created for these UE type sets.

As to whether the ADV discs will be brought over to cheaper editions is unknown, but I would not be surprised if we get a Collector's Edition option that will only include a rigid box, Amaray for Netflix TV discs, Amaray for Netflix Film disc and a booklet that covers the 'best of' UE artwork like Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) and Gundam SEED.

Basically this is a Gundam SEED situation repeated in a slightly different outcome is my assumption.

That only really means the 3+1 is likely. I’m not really sure there’s much point in re-releasing the others (especially out of order), as all the good stuff relates to the original series. Although there could be some extras/making of to append to the latest, I doubt there would be enough (or compelling) to distribute among the earlier sections.
Perhaps there’s a possibility of a full ‘movie set’, but individual releases of 1/2/3 won’t have much of a market.

Would anyone actually want a CE of the Netflix version? Bare-bones; maybe, but if anyone was to look at a CE/LE; the interest would probably be simply a decent quality and decently accurate (true to original) in digipak.

Personally; I’m simply going to ignore the Netflix part of my pre-order, and only watch the ‘original’ J/sub or dub versions. If someone makes a de-specialised set with FM2TM and anything else fixed; I’ll upgrade to those disks as replacements.

When I watched Evangelion I skipped Fly Me To The Moon every single time.

Evangelion has a dub? Also, what does ADV mean?

Safe to say, I'm happy to wait for the cheaper editions. I do love the design though.

I kind of miss the ADV label. Pity they no longer have a UK presence.
Off topic but ADV's release of Excel Saga was a true masterclass in how to do extras on a DVD. It had pop up bubbles explaining all the little parodies and Japanese jokes that obviously someone put a lot of time and care into.
It's a shame these days the best they can crap out is clean OP/EN credits and call those 'special features'.......

I've got nostalgia for ADV too.

Unfortunately, because it was in the days of paying £20 for three episodes (not ADV's fault specifically, the whole industry seemed to be like that), I never got to own many of their releases - I think Hellsing is the only complete series I own from them. 😅 I remember getting a couple of Excel Saga DVDs from Virgin Megastore too.

Hugh David (their marketing man) was always pretty cool.

Currently rewatching Paniponi Dash, which also has the vidnotes. Madlax and Noir were also loaded with extras. Then there's Le Chevy D'Eon. You got me on an ADV nostalgia kick, The irony is that I don't like Excel Saga or any other Nabeshin joints (except maybe Tenchi GXP).

I never knew there were so many variations until I looked up on some wiki or other.
However; the point isn’t that you need every single one (or something), but that simply having it there once does apply a certain context charge to the series.

Personally; I could simplify the lyrics and tone to apply a sense of melancholy loss: Apply to the relationships; compared to the described/implied, Shinji is basically prevented, Rei can’t/won’t, and there‘s a growing contrast compared to the lyrics for everyone else too.
Or apply it to the larger story, and it accentuates the difference in situations of being under siege with at best a bleak future, compared to the ‘space fantasy’ of frolicking in the galaxy.

And that simply means that if it had some kind of StarWars or marching brass or electro theme instead over the credits; it would be devalued at best, or be due to the story/direction being completely different.

Being more ‘on-topic’; the AtA CEs can often be disappointing, when the difference from the ‘standard’ version is simply a digipak and/or card box, and possibly a small poster or postcard. And the mentioned ‘clean’ OP/END.
Surely the minimum should at least be a small booklet (or bonus disk).

Not wanting to throw the Anime Limited section off topic but heck, I can remember buying Dirty Pair Flash from Virgin...on VHS 😅

Oh man I still have my Excell Saga DVDs. Might be time for a nostalgic rewatch

I was a poor student then & balked at the prices so I used to just get the pirate copies off of fledgling ebay... Back then pirate copies were good quality just without extras.

It's worth mentioning that paying via PayPal gave me the option to pay in 3 (over 3 monthly payments) which makes it more manageable.

I wonder ... They said that they increased the limit by 1000 pieces, and someone checked on the forum and suddenly there were 800 more (not a 1000). Did they leave the rest for later (next week, for example)?

Looked a bit into the laserdisc release and the packaging was surprisingly detailed. I'm wondering if the book for the UE will just take that info and translate it.

Eager to get my hands on that book, they're always the highlight on AL editions.

If it interests anyone else, there's a ton of pictures on this reddit post. The links in the first post take to the respective image galleries. Pretty cool.

I'm warming up to the whole laserdisc presentation. I think all the kanji is really heavy on the eyes and I don't think the Eva aesthetic lends itself to busy visuals (not in my mind anyway) but the character art is definitely very nice on closer inspection.

It still wouldn't be my preferred way of packaging evangelion (that would be the Japanese blu ray box, just the right amount of mysterious in there) but I'm starting to appreciate it more.
