UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

Found a copy of Eureka Seven Hi Evolution 3: Eureka at CeX. Can't be that much longer to go now, although how it's ended up there is anyone's guess. Full English on the back with "English and Japanese Dub" but I'm weary of spoilers and I'm not sure how to upload spoiler-ed images 😆

What does it say about the quality of the movie that someone would sell it to CEX for pennies despite having possibly the only UK copy in circulation...?

Wait how does this even happen?
They haven't announced a release date or preorders yet right?

I really do hope we hear something soon. I joked a few years back about not wanting to see Macross prioritised over Gundam, but as things stand...

Granted it could be that Bigwest are easier to work with and with Nozomi gone it's probably a boon to be the company handling Macross. But here we are, 10 years since AL announced they were doing Gundam and all we have is increasingly hollow promises that "more is coming". 10 years, guys. None of us are getting any younger.
Just to be clear, lest I be called a partypooper- I'm not dumping on anyone excited for Macross. I'm well aware it's been an absolute saga getting here. It very clearly has it's fans, even on the AL team, and even though I'm not amongst them (genuinely tried and failed to get into it) I'm happy for folks that want this. I'm just put out that a 'project' for an equally important franchise started over a decade ago is going nowhere fast.

Maybe I'm just blinded by my own preferences but AL have never been very good at hiding when something is a priority in their eyes.

While I agree that the apparent lack of progress on futher Gundam releases is a bit deflating, Gundam fans have done well from Anime Limited over the last decade. AL have over 50 Gundam releases, which I think amounts to over 500 episodes plus various OAVs and movies, many of which are shows that never had a previous UK release. By comparison they have only done two Macross releases so far, amounting to nine episodes and a movie edit of the same material. Even if they release Macross 7 at some point, combined with Frontier and Delta it would only come to about 20% of the episode count for Gundam shows that AL currently have in print.

Isn't that a kind of apples to oranges comparison though? They've technically been doing Gundam for a decade whilst Macross is a more recent pickup. So logically there'd be more Gundam put out.

Either way, hopefully we get something tangible soon. They surely have to realise just constantly promising in the vaguest way possible more is coming just isn't good enough, especially given the amount of times they've promised it and it hasn't happened. Heck, when I cover the MCM panels it's never me in the Q&As asking about it and it always comes up. They need to find a way forward on this that isn't months/years of deafening silence. They were the ones who made a bespoke logo for their Gundam releases and implied it'd be a committed library. The reality...well, there's a reason my most cynical take is thinking they thought they could get a massive franchise and drip feed it.

If you're saying I'm pushing them to saying nothing, they effectively already do that. The vague answers are basically all we get every few months and nothing else.
I don't think forum posts have any influence on their business at all tbh so I don't think it influences them either way.

More that they've got no firm dates likely because:

1. There's a big licensing mess as a result of the CR / Nozomi Buyout.
2. As they get into nicher and nicher of the Gundam titles, it might just not be as profitable for them to release in comparison to their other massive backlog which will take priority.

Anime Limited has now listed Crunchyroll titles up through the September releases, so are up to date again after having nothing beyond April listed for so long. As of right now, the preorder page still says April in large text at the top though.

Since I've been griping about this I thought I should acknowledge they've fixed it now. :)

Bleach Part 7 pre-orders are now live.
Use code "WELIVEINASOULSOCIETY" to get £10 off. Code can be used alongside "ANIMEUNLIMITED" discount code.

Note - code only available to those who have purchased CE set 1 or 2 from ATA store.

Well that certainly is a thing... stock is produced of this and ready to go, but we're waiting on the final okay of the Collector's Edition to release both the CE and Standard together (which is looking to be pretty soon now, at last!)

The really fun part about this is I've just checked all of the stock produced for this run, and every single unit is showing as where it should be and accounted for. This presents us with three possibilities:

1. This physical item doesn't exist, and we all live in a simulation
2. This is Schrodinger's Eureka Seven, and it both simultaneously exists and doesn't exist at the same time
3. A time traveller has decided to part with their anime collection and travelled back to 2025 to visit CEX and raise some funds

Happy to hear any other possibilities for this unexpected turn of events!

In fairness, we have released one or two Gundam titles in the past decade... ;)

A couple of things I want to weigh in on here:

First of all, Gundam isn't "a license" in the same way that Macross isn't "a license" - every individual title in that franchise is their own license, and is treated as its own project from that starting point through to the release of the product. So while yes, there are licensor relationship angles inherent to generalising around franchises, it doesn't really tie to the reality of how we acquire and handle content, and I would encourage people to remember that as we simply can't talk in general terms here.

Second of all, on the "Gundam silence" (Gundam Silence is a pretty good Gundam name, now I think about it, but I digress...). Above everything, I want to make a personal apology from myself on that front, as I know I've been at the head of the "Gundam news soon" reassurance, and I very much appreciate and am keenly aware that hasn't materialised, and if anything has backfired spectacularly. While I like to keep everyone as in the loop as I can on things, when something takes far longer than initially expected then that attempt at transparency can have a negative effect, and I recognise that we're at a stage where hinting that things are coming simply isn't going to cut it any more.

All I can really say off the back of that is that we haven't turned our backs on Gundam, nor have we deprioritised it - there are a lot of considerations at work here, but we are actively looking to keep things moving, and I am certainly an internal champion on us doing so (and I'm not the only one either by any length, as Gundam is something that we all want to actively continue to be the home of). As folks have noted, Gundam SEED FREEDOM has been BBFC cert'ed for home video release, so that should tell you it's being actively worked on - beyond that, there'll be more news when we have things in a place where they're ready to be talked about.

This keeps getting more bizarre. The only explanations I could think of were if a retailer had broken the release date or if a copy had been stolen from a warehouse, but it can't be either of those if all stock is accounted for.

Also @Hanners , while I know you won't be able to be more specific about release dates so soon after the latest Macross announcements last week, can you please clarify whether the current plan is to release Frontier before or after Delta?

I do have a theory as to what happened that is dull and boring but entirely logistically likely, but as it's dull and boring I'm sticking with the time traveller theory. :D

Current plan is Frontier first and then Delta - this is dependant upon how things pan out with materials etc etc etc, but we know that a lot of people (not just me!) are hungry for Frontier on home video so this will likely be our primary focus.
