UK Anime Distributor Anime Limited Discussion Thread

@anime_andrew

Are we lowly UK buyers (n)ever going to get 08th Ms Team and War in the Pocket, over 'ere? Now, I wouldn't want to get your hopes up as far as I am concerned, as I own both; already happily imported--alas, my patience has limits. BUT! I know someone that would, maybe, buy them. If you email. I'm more curious if you have something personal against the older OVAs, what with SEED/Narrative/everything else already being out, near enough.

Also, do you have the license for/are you going to sell me a sexy, sleek box set of Kakegurui, or is it Gundam/Evangelion/robots only for the foreseeable? I ask because there's an import version coming, and I have certain... needs. An itch that needs scratching, one could say.

Many thanks in advance~

Anime Limited does have rights to Kakegurui Season 1. It's been in production for a while because they had been trying to acquire the Netflix English dub.

As for Gundam, they'll eventually go over every major Blu-ray release of the franchise, but it's done in an unpredictable order (I do think The 08th MS Team, 0080: War in the Pocket, and G Gundam are the most likely candidates between now and Easter).

One Gundam title is 100% confirmed to make an appearance this Autumn but we don't know which (SEED Destiny is being worked on, but I don't think it'll be out before the end of the year at this rate, especially when they have Cardcaptor Sakura on target for 2021 which is going to be an expensive release so it wouldn't make sense to have two £100+ sets close to each other).

I already have one unwatched Sakura set, might as well get another one! Am I dreaming, or do they only have the license to the series and the second movie, not the first?

According to this you are correct, though I'll need to look around a bit more to know why (probably means that CCS movies 1 & 2 were released on BD by different US distributors?) I'm still wondering if they will redub Cardcaptor Sakura for this release, though if they do I will probably still keep my US Geneon/Pioneer DVD releases of the movies in order to have their older uncut dub versions for completeness' sake - the series has only had the Nelvana Cardcaptors dub with heavy bowdlerization and altered story, whole episodes removed etc., and the Animax dub which is uncut but generally agreed to be terrible in terms of acting standards, at the time of me writing this, but uncut dubbed versions do exist for the two movies, I think the first one uses the Cardcaptors dub cast and the second one I'm not sure.

Actually, both movies were released by Discotek. It's due to different Japanese licensors. The licensor for the first movie was Bandai Visual (now Bandai Namco Arts), and the second movie's licensor was Kodansha.

What is there to even cut in Sakura, jesus!

Yeah, that's gonna bother me, I remember enjoying the first movie quite a bit even if the second one is the more relevant one as it concludes the story, but yeah, it's gonna bother me having the second and not the first lol. It's annoying being an annoying colector (hoarder, in my case) woe is me, etc. 🤷‍♂️

I thiiink there's a French DVD of the first movie, just in case..

Thanks!

The Nelvana dub removed all the LGBTQ+ stuff and tried to make the show more appealing to boys by removing or splicing together some earlier episodes from before Syaoran Li becomes a regular character :( That's part of why their dub is called Cardcaptors rather than Cardcaptor Sakura, because, you know, Sakura is a GIRL. bigg massive heckin' eyeroll The only point I will concede on that front is
that there is also an implied past relationship that might have involved sex where one of the characters (a guy) was underage at the time and the other one (woman) was an assistant teacher, there is also a girl of 9 who is in love with her adult male teacher though thankfully there's definitely no sex involved there)
I can legit see how those things I put in the spoiler tag would bother some people since the show is aimed primarily at kids, but there was no need to remove
Tomoyo's feelings for Sakura or the Touya/Yukito relationship, both of which are portrayed in a child-friendly, age-appropriate manner

Man, that's borderline malicious. Everything in the series is presented in such a sweet way. I loved Yukito and Touya's relationship, and Tomoyo's adoration for Sakura.

It's one of my favorite animes because it's feel-good, all the time. It feels very earnest, very pure. Maybe it's nostalgia on my end, because it's been a few years since I've watched it but it would confortably sit in my top 10, if I had one!

And yeah, it's silly because CCS is shoujo af. I mean, at least I see it that way.

anime* tis both singular and plural, Joe. Say it with me: A-KNEE-MAY, not... mays. Also, my eyes see young love blooming via forum likes, over shoujo censorship. Warms my heart~ If there's one truth I've learned in this life, it's that shoujo/josei are always one-step away from being light smut.

I don't know if it's just me - likely so - but I have a hard time picturing Guts, or someone channeling Guts through the medium of a forum avatar, sitting down to have a session with Cardcaptor Sakura. Life is full of mysteries one can only discern, at the end. Why would one want a second unwatched box set I would ask, alas: anime fans are hoarders by nature, filling the void that is existence through the acquisition of physical media, until the pain of existence becomes too much and the desire to bin/burn it all wins out. Life is suffering, as Guts knows best, I suppose is my point. A lesson we all must learn~

That aside, thanks to Norm for letting me know Kakegurui is licensed. Won't the upcoming release have a new, non-Netflix dub AL could acquire? I discovered via a post you made that it has a new dub when I haven't sampled the old. I'd read Netflix are not fond of sharing, much like my Westie with food. With AL, I never know if to wait. I've imported Kokkoku in the past, only for them to then decide to release it. And I'll never understand why Ousama Game was a thing.

'Tis baffling to me they'd not go for straight for the cel classics. 08th in particular is held in high regard, I thought. But, oh well: as long as they don't release Gundam Victory after F91 piqued my interest and I'd read it's depressing enough to warrant an import, me and Andrew won't have words, perhaps.

I would say it handles deaths poorly so I find it more funny than depressing. It doesn't know what it wants to be.
Yeah, that's more it.

They just keep introducing female pilots only to kill them off a few episodes later, if that. Then there's the whole Uso's mother incident which @HellCat can't deny is depressing as hell, even if Uso doesn't really mention it again after the fact...

Basically Victory is just really poorly written, which is depressing in a different way, especially given its length...

I swear to God, I have no idea where this idea Victory is super depressing came from. People die but it's actually fairly optimistic and balanced.

NANI!? You mean to say I was misled by a.... a special individual that reviewed the show on MyAnimeList, expecting suffering and misery porn, and instead it's more comical? I KNEW I should've trusted the 6.70 average instead. Why God do you punish me so... I was unlikely to watch it anyway as find myself buying over watching these days, and only pt1/still sealed. That's a positive.

This reminds me of Turn A Gundamu. Dark horse of the franchise, they said. Start watching and moon spy starts by nearly drowning in waist high water, proceeds to put leeches on rich girl, and then runs after and slaps girl after she blamed him for her dad dying. Least the art box has tits across it, but still... gawd, why. Staring to think all Gundam TV series are less than the stellar quality one such as myself requires from their cartoons, honestly. Only one finished is SEED. I was young, bless.

I see Victory as a key stepping stone to the more optimistic Tomino who gave us Turn A and Reco. There's death, tragedy and darkness in it (including an 11th hour death that seems to happen purely to say sometimes in war people die because their luck runs out) but it's largely about light rising to face the darkness and the adult cast are some of the most emotionally mature and supportive in the entire franchise.

As someone who remembers the emerging Western fandom in the 2000s having people clutching Zeta bootlegs insisting it was absolutely dripping with blood and gore, I feel fans have this bad habit of overselling certain series as grim and dark.
