Anime Demographic

From what I have seen around I would agree with Rui that girls seem to buy more manga than guys.

I am 35 year old male, so fall in about the middle of that age range. I have a reasonable job as a design engineer with a gas distribution network earning in the upper 20k range so not mega money but not poor student money either. I don't go on foreign holidays, don't drink much and seldom go out nowadays (just seems too much hassle to organise everyone). This means I have a reasonable amount of money to spend on my main hobbies of anime/manga, comics, home cinema and archery. Although sometimes I should rein myself in a bit to spend less.

the UK average income is 22k per year (read this in 2 good newspapers, so should be fairly accurate)

based on that fact, i would define earnings thus:

middle would be like 16-30k a year

high would be 31k a year or more

low would be 15k a year or less

Is that average individual or household income?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2040306.stm

note, it says 60% earn less than that amount

that's from 2001/2002, cant find anything more up to date im afraid, I don't know if that's changed much, I would assume that if it has, its been for worse, given the current state of the economy.

in answer to your question, I don't think it says, but I would assume, Individual income, for household income, you would need to look up co-habitation statistics then to draw comparisons, or for individual circumstances, take what your fellow residents earn and add it together with what you earn, that would give your household income.

personal income applies most to this subject though, its likely that your wife/partner/kids/house mate's wont be funding your anime buying, am I right?

only time household income is relevant to this debate is if you live at home and are unemployed or still young and in education, then you should consider that many people have only 1 parent, so household income is purely that parents personal income (this young and in education with 1 parent thing applies to myself, my parents are divorce and I live with my mum)

my point is simple, in my experience, most people are completely and utterly ignorant of these facts, so when they say "high" "middle" or "low" earner, they probably are way off base in how they apply such terms

In my case you'd be wrong. :O My wife has a nice job & I don't, yet I still bought a lot of anime this month.

At least she likes anime too.

God, where do I find a woman like that? Then I can become a happy, lazy house husband. ;)

hence the term "likely" meaning in the majority of cases you probably wouldn't find that to be the case

good for you though, I would be delighted if I was able to marry a girl who shared my interest in anime.
