Anime Con News Round-Up for MVM, BEEZ and UK Anime!

This round of the all interesting Info shared by Beez & MVM talking about their own comapnies and the UK Anime Industry in general.

BEEZ

  • They are considering bring over Turn A Gundam Anime to the UK and it would be Anime Legend title if they did.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor is a possible future license.

Anime Legends box sets has seen an 200% sales increase since launch!

They say it now possible to release titles in the same year that they get broadcast in Japan.

They have mixed feeling about releasing Gurren Lagann movies in the UK, but would like to release them.

Dennou Coil while popular show at BEEZ seem unlikely for them as they fear it won't sell enough to be viable license.

They are unsure about Kaiba as being a possible license but believe MANGA UK would love to license Garden on Sinners.

Gundam 00 Blu-Rays are possibility if BANDAI USA themselves release it on Blu-Ray.

BEEZ are looking into seeing if the USA rights for Magical Index and Scientific Railgun include the UK rights.

BEEZ believe there more chance of seeing something more similar to Anime Central than seeing Anime on the BBC.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is not coming to DVD anytime soon.

BEEZ are curious to know if they think licensing Japanese live action TV series would be appealing?

They asked if Japan expensive style releases would be welcomed in the UK but they meet with an NO response the attended audience.

Bandai Channel’s for Europe still require more research required before becoming a viable UK platform.

MVM

  • They have no new License to announce but hope to gain few more licenses for 2011.

Blade of the Immortal will be sold on 3 single disc volumes.

It common for Live Action titles to sell 20,000 copies each while the same effort and cost spent on releasing anime see a return in sales of a few hundred.

Older Series are being released in Fat-packs at a rate of 4 a month.

Chobits licenses has expired so pick this up from http://www.anime-on-line.com if you want a UK copy.

MVM does have Blu-Ray rights to some titles. But they are having a wait and see approach on Blu-Rays. They seem to put off by the fact that Blu-Rays have to have a minimum print runs of 3000.

MVM they tend to look at older shows as MANGA & BEEZ tend to pick up the newer shows.

MVM mention they can get reasonable deal on older titles.

They won't be visiting Tenchi series as possible UK license
Other Info

  • A french company according to BEEZ are sitting on the UK rights for Dragon Ball Z

Japaneses companies are wary of allowing HD Anime on video download platforms like Apple.

Generally if theirs a UK licensee for a Blu-Ray title then USA release is Region locked.

Picking up old Anime titles can lead to problem in find PAL masters.

Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose. Such titles seem unlikely in R1, let alone over here.

BEEZ believe there more chance of seeing something more similar to Anime Central than seeing Anime on the BBC.
As somebody who doesn't pay a licence fee, I am indifferent towards the Beeb's lack of utility in this respect.

Chobits licenses has expired so pick this up from http://www.anime-on-line.com if you want a UK copy.
I must humbly and somewhat stupidly admit that I was unaware of this title being licensed over here. It seems that several volumes are now hard to obtain however, and in earnest I'd prefer a more condensed format (which Funi may well choose for their upcoming release).

MVM mention they can get reasonable deal on older titles.

Picking up old Anime titles can lead to problem in find PAL masters.
One hopes such difficulties don't dissuade them from rescuing classic works. Out of interest, does the law still require UK companies to release titles in PAL format?

F*cking plebs.*

What!? Is that a Blu-ray Disc Association requirement or something? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, if that's the case then no wonder we've hardly got any bloody BDs.

*I jest of course, I don't consider any of you inferior. Aha. Ahaha. No, seriously. Don't take it to heart.

I really hope somebody gets Index and Railgun brings it out in the UK. Really enjoyed them.
Sad to hear about DBZ, im not too upset because i imported the box sets from the UK. But its still unfair for other people.
I hope they bring Gundam 00 out as a Anime legend, if its on Bluray or DVD i dont really mind.

Probably more that that's how many they'd need to sell to make it viable, or the companies pressing blu-rays having minimum order quantities. Neither Technicolor not Eyeframe make this information public on their websites, the best I can determing googling around is that blu-ray replication requires volumes of "over 1000" unless you're doing a short duplication run of BD-Rs.

least Beez have finally officially confirmed what i've been saying for the past 3 years about DBZ
It goes along with that FUNimation told me 6 years ago when I queried why I couldn't even buy non-DVD items from the Z-Store (in particular, I was after the Kiddy Grade figures they were selling as an exclusive):

Z-Store said:
Due to the limitations of our license agreement with TOEI Animation, we can only sell merchandise to people in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa (for SA customers, choose US Minor Island for the country), and APO addresses.

Although I don’t have any contact information for them, the AB Groupe handles DBZ releases in Europe.

(the fact that I couldn't care less about DBZ was seemingly irrelevant)

Gundam 00 Blu-Rays are possibility if BANDAI USA themselves release it on Blu-Ray.
Please do.

BEEZ are curious to know if they think licensing Japanese live action TV series would be appealing?
Are people even aware of them? The only one I know is Moyashimon and that's because of the anime.

I'm not sure about live-action tv series' i've seen a few anime based ones like the live action versions of Jigoku Shoujo, You're Under Arrest and Hundred Stories and they tend to be pretty poor overall.

I wouldn't mind some Japanese movies though like Media Blasters and Manga UK do. Asian films seems to be more popular in the UK at least then in the US and we get loads of titles that America dont' seem to.

Really hoping they consider Dennou Coil and Kaiba for license and release in the UK, seen a few on the internet and they seem like awesome shows. BEEZ I hope you can make it happen.

By the way do we know if there is any chance of seeing Higurashi in the UK.

Thanks for the link! So as you say, almost exactly what we've got (except that they get Dragonball Kai, because they don't have France holding it to ransom).

I've been kind of holding off buying Samurai Champloo in case of a Blu-ray release but I guess MVM won't be doing it any time soon. I also think I might have read it's an upscale too, so time to stop waiting I guess!

Yeah, Samurai Champloo was animated in SD and the Funimation BD is an upscale (apparently not a particularly good one).

Great show, though, and well worth buying on DVD.

That settles that then! I imported the 1st two volumes of the Geneon release when it was new (and Geneon stuff was pricey!) so I really don't know why I don't own it all by now! It's probably cheaper to buy the box than the remaining 5 volumes separately now, and just give away the old discs to some lucky soul...

I'm sorry, what do you mean by these rights exactly. I thought Beez wouldn't be able to pick up a FUNi title (or FUNi let them). Had the impression that they only got stuff from Bandai, with the likes of Haruhi, Gundam or Eureka if you catch my vibe

No need for panic people, I was able to get all volumes pre owned for a reasonable price.

Plus I've heard FUNi will get a license for it by next year

You can get the UK singles for a fiver each from Anime-On-Line (though you'll have mismatched spines, argh). The cheapest I can find the re-released box set is £28.99 (the orginal box set is OOP). Hope that helps.

As I understand it Beez is able to license things independently like they did with Durararar-what-ever-it's-called before it had been in the US. Although it's probably a lot easier/cheaper to release things that the US operation has (in terms of being ready subbed and dubbed for example)

Ooh thanks that is quite cheap! United publications have a 'bargain bundle' for £21.00 for all volumes but if you have to pay postage on all 7 volumes then the other option may be cheaper (with free postage!)
