Anime at the cinema

Saw Labyrinth today, it reminded me of Belle a bit (I didn't like Belle very much) but it was a lot better than Belle but still derivative of a lot of anime movies and series that I've seen in the past few years. It rates a solid 7 out of 10 points-you should see it if you get the chance to.

Just got back from seeing Angels Egg... still collecting my thoughts. The intro by Jonathan Clements was really interesting, and gave some great context to the film that I feel made it an even better watch.

I'm really looking forward to the GitS preview next week too, I'm sure it'll be great 😁

Interesting, my screening didn’t have the Jonathan Clements intro, what did it provide in terms of context?

Yeah, I never saw the Clementary either, so I'd like to hear what he said. Although I can make guesses.

Once you know that Oishii was quite interested in Christianity and had seriously considered entering seminary at a young age, you can make a lot of notions about the film being about the destructive nature of the loss of faith/ the damaging effect organized religion has over more free-spirited faith, etc.

I mean this is a film where the wanderer/soldier working for some great artificial eye has a weapon shaped like a crucifix, while regimented groups attempt to catch phantom fish, only to cause random destruction to the surrounding settlement. It's not exactly subtle with the allusions.

He was talking about how the film influenced Oshii's works going forward and how it also inspired many other things like Dark Souls 3 and that some movie that used footage of Angels Egg, also talking about how despite Angels Egg being a lot nicher than many other Anime and not the main thing Oshii is known for (GitS) it still pulled a wide audience when screened at SLA and that the viewers had come with different reasons, some interested from things LIKE Dark Souls etc, some for the interesting history of it, and some because they liked Anime/Oshii's other works.

He also talked about Oshii and his time reading the Bible and how that influenced the movie as well as SPOILING Oshii's interpretation of the film, telling us to plug our ears if we didn't want to get spoilt. I shut my ears as best I could but still heard a bit of what he was saying, it would have been great if they lowered the volume of that part seeing as this was on loud cinema speakers... even so what I heard was only a few words on their own and even then I don't think it would have affected my enjoyement as it's easy to interpret the film in your own way.

He talked a lot about Oshii before the making of Angels Egg and it's muted reception as it released on tape, Oshii fighting to get it played in just ONE cinema on an early Sunday morning so that the magazines would have to review it to get more eyes on it was a really interesting bit.

It was really cool seeing him talk about all of this, I've used some of his books and listened to commentary tracks and interviews to get info on some topics I'm super interested in (UK dubs of Anime) so I really respect him making it even cooler that he introduced the film and really got me even more excited to watch it 😁 I really hope it gets put as an extra on a home release or put online.

I didn't write anything that was said down, so I hope nothings too wrong... I don't think my memory is THAT bad.

The final season of Bleach, the 4th part of Thousand-Year Blood War titled The Calamity, is getting some UK screenings.

This will be very successful and enjoyed by many. This is a very strange point because this is where the manga started to be severely rushed due to the author's health issues, so they may or may not be expanding some things and maybe removing others. There's a lot riding on this for the die-hard fanbase at this specific point in time.

It does make me wonder how many people are aware of Angel's Egg in the west purely due to that one Vaatividya video. I'm convinced it led to a notable uptick in awareness and interest. Which was probably not hard given how few of us there were before.

Also the movie you're talking about is called In the Aftermath, which was some budget indie release that used footage from the film to reframe it as a trippy post-apocalyptic story. It came out on blu-ray several years ago, which I bought but still haven't gotten around to watching. All I know about it is that it has some pretty cringy pseudo-intellectual attempts at narration.

Saw GitS E1&2 just a few hours ago, it was awesome. I’m so glad I decided to see it in the cinema, the animation and art style and everything just really popped on such a big and bright screen. At first I was a bit… eh about the dub voice actors when they were announced but honestly they were great, though when the full series comes out and inevitably Togusa gets more screen time I’m sure it’ll be difficult to come to terms with Crispin Freeman not voicing him (noooooo! Seriously though Togusa’s VA in this was good!)

The behind the scenes look was very interesting which I really enjoyed. There was a lot they talked about that I never really gave too much thought to and they all gave really detailed answers which got me really invested in the production of this new anime.

Looking forward to the actual release, and I REALLY want to read the manga now (I was going to months ago but got lazy lol)

I'm dejected Ghost in the Shell didn't come to Bedford. There's every chance Akira didn't do well enough to encourage further but I'd have happily supported this locally. A heatwave and a fatal train crash nixed any notion of travelling out of town to participate.
