The best-known narrative work from graphic artist Yoshitoshi ABe, Haibane Renmei is the curious fantasy tale of a young girl born into a community of angels living in an isolated walled-city. Marked by its introspective and thoughtful atmosphere, I always tend to think of it as a kind of follow up to Serial Experiments Lain, even though ABe only provided artwork for Lain and was not involved in the writing.

Based on an incomplete doujinshi by ABe, the anime is not a long series (13 episodes) and my thinking was that we stick with the usual format of one episode a day, but as some or other kind of holiday (mostly involving Wham, as far as I can tell) is happening soon, please don't stress over not being able to keep up if you need to attend to other things - I thought we could even put in a rest-day for folk to catch up either this weekend or at that other holiday the week after.

Due to my own inability to organise my way out of a paper bag these days, I'm a bit later in putting this thread up than I would have liked, so while I would encourage folk to post impressions of ep1 tonight if they like, I won't shift the episode marker until the end of tomorrow (so midnight on the 24th).

Episode 1 - I am falling, I am fading, I am drowning, help me to breathe



Geez, I didn't realise quite how difficult it was going to be to talk about Haibane on an episode-by-episode basis with foreknowledge of what's to come, but I'll do my best. It has been quite some time since I've seen it mind you, so hopefully I'll notice some new things as well. The first noticably great moment happens barely a minute into the episode when the intro music just cuts out and Rakka's previously peaceful and introspective descent becomes one of raw terror. And it's perhaps appropriate, the wonderful but terrifying subject of birth is definately the focus of this first episode, whether that's Rakka's own rebirth with her expectant new family awaiting her arrival or the very childbirth like emergence of her wings. Welcome to the world, Rakka. One of them anyway, in all its confusing, beautiful, painful glory.



And first among those to welcome Rakka to her new life is Reki. I had forgotten how kindly Reki was, in my memories I think she had become somewhat more aloof and while given to a bit of quiet musing here, she's probably the one who cares most about making Rakka feel welcome in her new home in Old Home. I thought it was quite clever how the other Haibane describing their cocoon dreams also worked to establish their basic characters. The pace is gentle but not to the point of dragging, easing the viewer into the world along with Rakka. And it is an attractive world, at least as much at it can be in its SD limited form. The colour palette is very subdued, probably the most so of any anime I've ever seen, lending it a unique, almost sepia tone that brings to mind the nostalgia of old photographs. Which is probably intentional, while I can't remember exactly what the level of technology is like in the world of Haibane Renmei (Reki has a motor scooter, there are telegraph wires and wind turbines) it doesn't feel any later than the 1960s.

As a big enough fan of ABe's to own multiple artbooks, and of Haibane Renmei as a work, I still have to admit that the early digital era Haibane doesn't quite capture his designs in the same way the traditionally animated Lain does. No-one draws eyes quite the way ABe does or with such intensity that they provide a great deal of the depth and expressiveness of the face, on the closeup shots his style is apparent but on longer shots the low resolution of the digital animation doesn't really allow for a whole lot of detail. As I recall, Haibane Renmei and the doujin that inspired it began as simply ABe doodling angels. Angels doing things like flipping pancakes, with no particular idea for a story in mind at all. It's kind of remarkable what it turned into from those unlikely beginnings.

Episode 1
First time watching the show, watched dubbed.
We're not given too much to go on here. There's a city which our group are not allowed to leave and as far as I can gather they are all "born" from cocoons and are named after the dream they had inside. It's not clear whether the "young wing" kids were also "born" that way or whether if they did they will grow. Not sure how long Kuu, I think it was, had been there, but she didn't seem much older than them, but seemed to be part of the grown up gang.
Only sign I've seen that all might not be sunshine and lightness is the crow trying to help Rakka in her dream, it seems it did not want her to fall to wherever this place is. It is also implied that they have come from somewhere else, so this could be a sort of purgatory or heaven.

Episode 1 - Grey's Anatomy

While I have seen the series before, I remember being deeply puzzled by it, so I'm curious to see what kind of meaning might occur to me this time around. It definitely feels like one that's intended for the viewer to draw their own conclusions on what it's about and what we should take from it.

But yeah, the first episode mainly seems interested in establishing the themes and the general atmosphere of the show. I suppose you might say the storytelling is more environmental than anything else; I feel this is a series where it's best not to get too hung up on looking for meaning in the small details, but a lot of work has clearly gone into establishing a very specific look for their world. The haibane are born into a sort of mid-century rural mitteleuropa (vaguely Balkan even?) and don't seem to be the original residents of the building they live in. Barred windows on the doors give the Old Home something of a prison or sanatorium about it and, while Reki's comment about possibly missing where Rakka's cocoon appeared suggests it wasn't intentional, I found it hard not to think it was as if Rekka's cocoon was confined to a cell. The world seems bucolic and pleasant, however - if this is a vision of the afterlife, it doesn't feel like anyone here is being punished. It's also far from humourless, with the little cartoon of Reki's face on the warning sign indicating that maybe the haibane aren't taking it too seriously. Not to mention Rakka's cosplay-ish makeshift headband to hold her halo on.



Other than Rakka's dream of falling from the sky, the only thing that seems to stand in contrast to the slice-of-life vibe is the scene of her wings emerging from her body, which, along with her apparently scratching her way out of the cocoon, does feel a bit David Cronenberg body horror-ish. I'm not sure if it would have occurred to me to liken the wings emerging to childbirth if ayase hadn't said it, but something about Reki offering Rakka her thumb to bite on does give it a feel of midwifery to me - I feel that something like a belt might have been the obvious choice, but that seems a lot less intimate.

Episode 1

I had watched a few episodes a little while ago but didn't get a chance to finish it for various reasons, a lack of interest not being one. The first episode is an intro fit for a mystery series, primarily experienced from Rakka's viewpoint as a "newborn", with other Haibane starting to introduce the apparently new world and customs.

I also very much second @ayase for the parallels with childbirth, primarily the wings that were more akin to human childbirth with the primary effort being from the "mother", versus the earlier non-mammalian effort of the "newborn" itself mustering the strength to survive and break through the shell cocoon. On that note, it seems we've got most of the animal kingdom characteristics covered here in the nature of the Haibane, with the mammalian/human appearance, avian features in the wings and then the somewhat overlapping aspect with insects (as opposed to reptiles?) in the eggs being cocoons, and lastly maybe even fish in that Rakka could breathe within the fluid in the cocoon despite the absence of an obvious umbilical cord - would be interesting to see if Haibane can breathe underwater. But in the end, I'm pretty sure I'm just overthinking all of this here.

On the metaphysical aspects, the sepia tone as @ayase mentioned, does evolve a sense of purgatory to me as well, neither being the beautiful, bright and colourful expectation of a heaven, nor the dark & menacing image one may choose to have of a hell. The Haibane form is clearly not the origin point of these characters given that, despite no memory recollection, Rakka is intrinsically aware of having a different name previously, being human and having a notion of what a family is. Hence the viewer is further lead to believe the possibility of this being a rebirth or afterlife. Forgive my clunky analogies but the memory being wiped could be analogous to a hard disk format with, as they say, not everything being entirely deleted nor permanently? However this format affects not only the individual but the world as a whole, i.e. don't bother going to look for your ex-family as neither party would be able to recognize nor have any memory of the other. This world has rules and boundaries also. What is the purpose of the adornments that are the halos (apart from some welcome comic relief)and where do they come from (the same source as the rules one presumes)? Do they serve an existential function, like the air one needs to breathe, or are they security monitors, like asbo tags?

Lots of questions to ponder but as @Professor Irony mentioned, best not to dwell too much, and more important to enjoy the ride.

First time watching. Just a few notes for Episode 1.

• The blu ray disc wasn't labelled with which was disc one or two. I guessed correctly.
• The menu screen has some nice music. It made me what to watch the show immediately.
• Girl falling reminded me of castle in the sky, then the vibe changed to 'Holy **** I'm falling'
• This show is already completely different from what I thought it was going to be. I've gone in almost completely blind and I thought Rakka was going to be the only 'angel'.
• The set up for this show is good, it does not give away much in the first episode and the world is intriguing. I have so many questions.
• I like how the 'halos' are made using a doughnut frying pan.

I will watch episode 2 sometime tonight. First I need to watch my episode a day of Gintama.

Episode 2
More introductory stuff. This time the wider area surrounding the residence which turns out to be an old dormitory for a school. There didn't seem to be many children in the crowd in town, maybe there's a lore reason for that and thus the empty dormitory. The Haibane are different from the residents of the town and seem a bit like second class citizens with having to live off discarded stuff and not getting paid in money, but looked after by the titular Haibane Renmei. Rakka picks out a very Japanese looking sailor uniform, even in a European looking world!
No one is allowed out of the city, but traders from outside are let in and only communicate with a representative of the Haibane Renmei, who are maybe starting to seem a little neferious.
Oh, there's another crow. Someone seems very interested in Rakka. It was a bit hard to tell which of the two communicating were the outsiders and who was the Haibane Renmei representative. I think the one eye mask dude was from the Haibane Renmei with the little wings on his staff, and he was the one looking at her. Also wonder why they would be in trouble for being too close to the walls?
Seems we'll learn a bit more about the Haibane Renmei next episode when Rakka has to visit them.

I've seen it mentioned before that this era doesn't scale up well and certainly some scenes seem terribly blurry!
What were they using in this era to animate? and why is it so hard to turn it into HD quality?

Episode 2

First surprise was that the Haibane are actually living amongst humans, albeit in a somewhat mendicant sort of lifestyle (reincarnated Buddhists in a capitalist society??), making me think okay this is not purgatory then, only for that thought to be put straight into doubt again when it's shown that it's not just the Haibane that are restricted/imprisoned, but rather the whole town and it's inhabitants, within the walls-that-must-not-be-passed.

Haibane rep, that I too assumed was the dude in the creepy mask and demeanour, seems to be the security officer in charge, having authority over the regular humans also. The whole scene with the crows and that rep was palpably sinister - I assumed the crow was warning the girls of some danger (given the one at the start of the first episode was trying to help Rakka as she fell) but with the framing could equally have been alerting the rep to the girls loitering presence (good crows? bad crows? both?).

Reki seems to be a legend - proper maternal/big sister type with enviable levels of patience with the kiddos and other Haibane. She has a good crack at pretending to be anything but, whilst putting up scary signs to supposedly shoo away the kids in the last episode, and then bemoaning all the visitors in the spacious room which she picked and decked with a table small enough to serve a platoon.

I love how the Haibane name each other. One's viewpoint on life being dependant on their age could be seen to be reflected in the older ones having a more retrospective approach of picking characteristics from the dreams they've had before their re?birth, versus the younger feathers looking forwards to their dreams of the future.

The sign language use made me wonder about communication and whether in this European-looking town with, I think both humans and Haibane being varied between Eastern and European facial characteristics (I see what you mean about the impressive eye animation style of ABe @ayase) are all speaking a common language and if they're all being "collected" from different parts of the original world?

Episode 2

• I really like the music, it's certainly a standout for me
• The opening seems to be how Rakka became a cocoon in that room.
• What happens if they don't follow the rules, can they just ignore them?
• An interesting way for transactions.
• Everyone is trapped in the town, Attack on Titan style.
• The mention of an organisation made me think of Claymore.
• So many windmills
• The Ending reminds me of the Land of the Lustrous ED.

Episode 2 - Mother, should I build The Wall?

Again, it feels like we're largely still establishing the world, but from memory, I think it would be fair to say this is as much the story of the world we're seeing as it is of any one particular character within it. There's certainly a lot to unpack this time. I'd actually forgotten there was a literal wall around the town - it must cover a pretty expansive area, given that the haibane travel back and forth through gently rolling fields with those windmills in the distance, while ostensibly unable to see it.

The relationship between the haibane and the 'humans' seems particularly open to interpretation. The fact that they cannot use money or acquire first-hand goods does make them seem like second-class citizens (Hikari's choice of words that the humans "let them" live there is rather pointed), but the other people don't seem hostile towards them; it feels more as if they're regarded as a curiosity as much as anything. The same attitude also apparently extends to the shaman-like Toga people from 'outside' - the townsfolk don't show much concern, to me they're like tourists watching a token ritual, like the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace or the guards saluting each other at the border between India and Pakistan.

It did cross my mind to wonder (and can't remember if it was ever addressed), if this is indeed a kind of purgatory, whether we're meant to assume the townsfolk are people leading lives of their own, or if they're more like NPCs to create the illusion of a populous world for the haibane? The guy at the thrift store does seem to have a distinct personality (to the point of maybe even being a bit anachronistic for the setting), but not necessarily to the point where I feel like he exists when the haibane are out of the room, if that makes any sense.

What were they using in this era to animate? and why is it so hard to turn it into HD quality?

Someone more knowledgeable can correct me, but if memory serves, I think it's that the encoding being used by the studios at the time to create their master version isn't high enough quality to produce the necessary resolution for contemporary HD video. Unlike something created on film where you have a physical negative that can be scanned again using modern methods, unless the original project files for these digital productions still exist on a hard drive somewhere, there's currently no means of creating a better master other than upscaling.

Episode 3
Think even less happened in this episode than the previously slow paced openers. I'm just going to list a few points I remember:

1. Reki has recurring dreams.
2. Haibane Renmei temple is very out of the way.
3. The Communicator is the only one who speaks at all it seems, even with the Haibane who they are supposed to be in charge of!
4. Only one bakery in the whole of town lets the Haibane work there!
5. More crows.
6. No body likes carrots, apparently!

The opening seems to be how Rakka became a cocoon in that room.

When I saw it at the start today I remembered your comment. All the other senior Haibane see the ball of light decend, but in the first episode they had no idea about it until Reki finds it randomly. Although in the OP the light turns into a sapling of some kind.

Episode 3

Appeared to be off to a relatively foreboding start with Reki startled awake after what she called a dream, but seemed to have been more of a nightmare to me, and then Rakka's quest to go meet the rep, which reminded me of Nier Replicant for whatever reason! But in the end this episode is some more scene-setting with a sprinkling of humour.

The Haibane rep, didn't seem as scarily framed this time without the eerie music or cawing crows. A hierarchy still very much revolving around him with an unexplained rule of him being the only one allowed to speak in the temple with others needing non-verbal means. Boss man also makes sure to tell Rakka to be a good little Haibane and follow the rules, which is greatly explained later by Reki as older folk having nothing else to do but lecture others heh.

Kuu made a wonderful observation on human perception about of how differently the crows are treated by humans, compared to Kuu, primarily due to the difference in their appearance and inability to communicate, even if their ultimate intention for friendship is no different. The usual fear of the unknown that drives negative behaviours like prejudice. Also reminds me of the general instinctive perception (clearly not always correct) of furry animals being cute and cuddly versus insects being creepy and scary.

Spoiler: After a bad start, Reki soon got back in her element

Back at work minding the kids and getting them to eat their veg (I thought carrots are meant to be sweet??). Hilarious how the older lady just bribed the kids in the end with pancakes because she wanted some for herself heheh.

Episode 4

Last episode started with Reki waking up from a recurring dream and this one has Rakka being woken up from her sinister dream with Crow-san. The crows have been a constant presence, making up one of the mysteries in the show as to their purpose and nature. Kana mentions a legend about them returning things the Haibane forgot, being the only creatures that can venture beyond the walls. She was initially implied to also find them a nuisance, like the villagers do, but was shown to have more concern for them becoming dependent if pampered.

The clock tower boss man made an interesting comment about whether Kana was going to leave, with Kana also referring to someone, possibly a Haibane, who had previously lived in the old home clock tower and started modifications to it and leaving blueprints behind for others to continue the work. Another pointer towards this possibly being a purgatory, if the Haibane's presence is transient. Reki and Nemu are implied to have grown up here, so I'm guessing they don't stay stagnant in their forms, as I had wondered at the start with Rakka being born in an older form than the younger feathers. Haven't seen very old Haibane though I don't think (think the old lady from the last episode in old home was human). Also interesting that she mentioned she had recall of motor skills like how to talk and ride a bike, as I had been wondering that they're all speaking a common tongue despite some discrepancies/variations with the location, appearances and dresses for example, including European outfits to the Japanese schoolgirl uniform, touched on earlier, and Kana's more Chinese looking outfit. Is this a common location for collecting souls from all over the original world? Are the crows involved in collecting them? Are the wings purely for aesthetics and hanging rep-communication-bells or do they grow when the Haibane are ready to fly away?

The humans are implied to have more of a reverence for the Haibane rather than treating them as inferior, whilst having limitations put on them also with how much they can involve
themselves with the Haibane. Again giving them more of an NPC feel as was mentioned earlier.

Lastly, I second enjoying the music in the series. It is lovely and matches the mood quite well, being ominous in certain scenes, soothing and relaxing in others and comical whenever there's the halo/doughnut/bagel involved (it really does seem to be for comic relief thus far heh).

Episode 4
Not too much happened lore wise apart from reinforcing a lot of the stuff from the first 3 episodes like the various rules in place, crows being important in some way and dreams. It's still keeping a good balance of the hints of something being off with the comedy stuff.

Episode 3 - Sometimes even electronic brain Pancake Crystal Elderly.



Sproing.

As everyone else has commented, there’s not an awful lot of incident in this one, again it just seems focused on describing the world, but there’s still that undercurrent of something going on just out of sight. The ritualistic exchange with the Toga does possibly raise the question of whether the Haibane are forced into their current situation against their will, but any restriction on their personal freedoms seems pretty trivial. The little bells for them to communicate with are a cute touch anyway.

Perhaps it’s the difference between Hikari having been in this situation for a while and Rakka having recently arrived, but it’s interesting that Hikari is much less bothered by the dodgy rope bridge. If you knew you were in the afterlife, would you still fear death?

• Being pulled up by the halo, true test on the halo's stability
• Kana wants to fix clocks. Is this some kind of passion from their previous life?
• Late to work but still enough time to try and recreate the scene from Miyazaki's On Your Mark.
• Best line, Who'd buy a watch from an unpunctual clock maker?

Episode 5
Making up your own origin story! Seems there was a religion in the world, but the story of the world's origin was lost? In their version the Haibane were a prototype, but managed to escape into the world and the town is floating, neither land nor sea. The humans who also occupy the town must have drawn the short straw!

Elsewhere my theory that the Haibane have replaced children in the world due to some problem or other turned out wrong as we meet a pregnant woman. Also there's another group of Haibane who seem a bit more rowdy than the ones we've so far.

Not too much of the dread factor, including no crows! Only Kuu acting a bit odd and saying goodbye a lot right at the end.

• It's time to work in Library.
• Beginning of the world, an unfinished story turns into a fairy tale. But is there any truth in it?
• Rival Haibane gangs, like the sharks and the jets.
• I'm always surprised when an episode ends, it doesn't feel like 20 minutes has gone by. So far, so good
