Chomolungma said:Saiyuki is an anime loosely based on the Asian myth of "Journey to the West" (in Japanese, saiyuki). It stars four characters, Sanzo, Goku, Goyjo and Hakkai who are basically ultra-bishounen. It's in a very episodic format; the storyline only really hits strongly at the end. It's not bad, but not really exceptional because the message of the show seems to be how cool Sanzo is as a sinful but sacred high priest, and a lot of the series follows the format of arriving somehwere, meaning someone, a fight scene and the rescue of or revelation about the previously meet characters. It does have some really good character designs though.
DragonBall and Saiyuki aren't the only (relatively) well-known series based on that particular legend. In addition to a reference in the Read Or Die OVA, the live-action series Monkey Magic is a retelling of the Saiyuki legend.Paul said:I wouldn't mind seeing this, if just to satisfy a little curiousity I have with Journey to the West. I understand Dragonball is actually based on some part of this legend? It would be interesting to see how Goku's personality differs from DB to this. I wonder if Sayuki has any other references/similiarites with DB outside of Goku.Chomolungma said:Saiyuki is an anime loosely based on the Asian myth of "Journey to the West" (in Japanese, saiyuki). Actually all of them have been released in the UK. The original post was from 2005....Conan-san said:A day late and a penny short: Saiyuki is available for free off Joost, Gantz is haleriously old news and Madlax is Bee Train at it's "finest"; all talk, no pants.
