ADV UK asking you what you want

Don't worry IanC, we have a spoiler button just in case ;)

I actually haven't seen the end, I stopped watching at roughly episode 13 when it was licensed. If you want to know what happens, you should try the animesuki.com forums or the ShocWave GantZ manga site.

From reading the animenfo revs madlaz seems to be a rip-off from Noir, aparently from the same studio as well. Gnatz is only 2 eps and 13 vols due to licensing issues, same in the states as well. Apparently it was too hot for JPTV.

Saiyuki is an anime loosely based on the Asian myth of "Journey to the West" (in Japanese, saiyuki). It stars four characters, Sanzo, Goku, Goyjo and Hakkai who are basically ultra-bishounen. It's in a very episodic format; the storyline only really hits strongly at the end. It's not bad, but not really exceptional because the message of the show seems to be how cool Sanzo is as a sinful but sacred high priest, and a lot of the series follows the format of arriving somehwere, meaning someone, a fight scene and the rescue of or revelation about the previously meet characters. It does have some really good character designs though.

I wouldn't mind seeing this, if just to satisfy a little curiousity I have with Journey to the West. I understand Dragonball is actually based on some part of this legend? It would be interesting to see how Goku's personality differs from DB to this. I wonder if Sayuki has any other references/similiarites with DB outside of Goku.

Yeah, the saiyuki story is extremely popular all over East Asia, so Goku is a popular name in anime.

I don't know much about Dragonball, but the Goku of saiyuki is obbessed with food, spunky, cheerful, playful and appears to be immature most of the time.

Sounds like Goku to me!

The Monkey TV series is a more faithful retelling of Journey to the West than I've seen in anime. I'd buy it on DVD if it wasn't bloody awful.

DragonBall and Saiyuki aren't the only (relatively) well-known series based on that particular legend. In addition to a reference in the Read Or Die OVA, the live-action series Monkey Magic is a retelling of the Saiyuki legend.

It's bad now, but when I watched it originally on TV (around 1976ish) it was one of the best things on TV  (I had a thing for the pig, but I was only 10 years old  ).

Goku is the only similar thing in the 2.
There is a wonderful group of baddies in Saiyuki, including a mad scientist who cuddles a plushy most of the time :D It has a lot of reference to the gods and not an android in sight
I first watched it about 3 years ago on a set of really badly subbed Asian DVDs. There's a really good OVA as well.
Although it does seem to be overloaded with bishounen characters, there are a few bishoujo characters too! plus there's a wide range of comedy, angst, good ole punch ups and a very intriguing plot.

A day late and a penny short: Saiyuki is available for free off Joost, Gantz is haleriously old news and Madlax is Bee Train at it's "finest"; all talk, no pants.

Actually all of them have been released in the UK. The original post was from 2005....
