Absolutely essential anime titles.

Dragonball Z, Pokémon and Naruto
DBZ and Pokemon and no-brainers for the list, Naruto not a chance.

Reaper covered most of the truly essential ones from an historical perspective, if you are looking more globally then the series used to form Voltron and the non-Macross Robotech are also pivotal.

Would also probably add in either Barefoot Gen or Grave of the Fireflies.

First anime in colour? First OVA?

The first oav is generally considered to be the 1983 sci-fi story Dallos (sadly not about oil), but I think there may be some dispute over that. I've seen the first episode and it's okay, but I don't think anyone would really be all that interested in it if it weren't directed by Mamoru Oshii. Megazone 23 is the first one that was a real commercial success.

As for colour, apparently it's Toei's 1958 film The Tale of the White Serpent, but I had to look that one up. Intriguingly, China actually beat Japan to the punch on that one; they had a colour short released two years before.

Personally though, I think the 2 Daicon films should always be preserved.
I have two two OVAs down as older than that; Otsuki-sama to Oujo(August '83) and Midori no Neko(1st october '83), though that's the first multi episode one.

Wasn't sex and violence exactly what Cutey Honey was about?

Not if you consider her multiple transformations to be a visual metaphor for the changing roles of women in Japanese society in the 60s and 70s.

Hah, you may be onto something there. Especially since, if I remember rightly, she was still kinda hitting the glass ceiling and getting jobs that were 'safe' for a woman (air hostess, traffic warden, marie antoinette, etc.).

To be fair it wasn't actually me that saw that. A friend of mine wrote a sociology essay about the changing roles of women in society and Cutie Honey was the work that he referenced in his essay. I never got to read most of it but he had some interesting points, iirc.

I did think you were kidding at first, but that does sound genuinely interesting. The later versions changed gears a bit, but Cutey Honey was a really bizarre show (even by Go Nagai standards) and would probably be ripe for some sort of analysis.

'Might go back and watch some more of it now...

I am nitpicking somewhat but shouldn't the title to this thread be more like "Most Historical Important Anime". The title "Absolutely essential anime titles" seem to suggest more in the way of titles which are essential in the terms of worth watching.

Another problem is the issue of Manga comics not been mentioned. Manga and Anime are heavily interlinked. A Manga title like Devilman at the time never got a proper anime adaption. The Devilman Manga is probably the title or least one of them which kick started the whole adult anime scene and is one the most influences titles for Anime/Manga titles to this day.

Very true,if Devilman ever got the anime adaption it truly deserves it could be one of the best series ever made, but heh i,ve still got a soft spot for the cheesy 70,s Devilman anime, every time he shouts devil wing or devil cutter it has me in stitches for all the right and wrong reasons and it does have one of the best anime openings ever, you cant not but love it lol.

Don't forget the early parts of the Devilman manga where turned into 2 really good OVA in the late 80's & early 90's. A very successful adaptation as the required modernized didn't hurt the product at all and actually enhanced it.

Too bad they never finished it off, as another 2-3 OVA would be all they require to finish the story. They willing to do Hellsing series of 8+ OVA's but not interested in doing 2 more for Devilman OVA's. I never understand the way the Anime industry thinks sometimes.
