Absolutely essential anime titles.

Inspired by the should MVM resurrect ADV titles convo...

This isn't a list of totally brilliant anime, the best shows and movies going right now.

I'm thinking about those titles, whether you personally like them or not, are so important to the history of anime that they should by definition be always available. The sort of shows and movies that you would show to an new anime fan as an example of how things used to be, and where anime came from.

I think the industry would be a lot different if there wasn't any

Akira
Makoto Shinkai movies (Place Promised in The Early Day, Voices of a Distant Star, 5cm per second)
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Bubblegum Crisis
Satoshi Kon movies (Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, Paprika)

What titles do you feel ought to be eternally available just for their importance to the anime industry?

firstly I am honored that should MVM resurrect ADV titles inspired you to make this.

secondly ADV that should be out there is
Azumanga Daioh
Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor
Elfen Lied
Neon Genesis Evangelion

iv seen these titles and they were crack back in the day
i think some animes should be given one more chance that have been discounted for release. if mvm is going to release some new series old and/or new they should re-release some ADV titles. (if they can licence them) and yes i know some titles in ADV are crap but there are some good titles too.

Do you mean Guyver: The Bioboosted Armour as in the series that ADV released and Manga licence rescued back in 2009, or do you mean the original OVA that was only released here by Manga on VHS?

to be fair i got the single sets by ADV i didn't get the boxset released by manga. i forgot manga rescued guyver (i wish they carried on with that anime it was freakin sweet

I'm just asking because I'm rewatching Guyver: The Bioboosted Armour right now, and it's as far from a candidate I can imagine for preserving.

I can make an argument for the original Guyver OVA series, but the Bioboosted Armour remake adds nothing new to the medium, rehashes a story that's twenty years old, with a retro look to the animation, and a storytelling style that is completely outdated.

What do you feel that the remake has that renders it a timeless classic, that the anime world would be lesser without?

EDIT: This isn't another licence rescue wishlist thread, rather a nominate something for the anime equivalent of the rock and roll hall of fame thread

to be frank, i think the original had its moments and so did the remake but i watched the remake first and i think it was atom that got me on the ropes for more in the remake, but in my opinion i think guyver as a remake for a timeless classic id say no sadly its just missing a few thing the original had and isn't old enuff yet

Mobile Suit Gundam and Macross would have to be there.

Cowboy Bebop must have been one of the first TV series to have had genuine crossover appeal and mainstream recognition in the West.

Miyazaki, especially Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke.

On the subject of the Guyver remake, it's better then the previous one for me soley on the basis that it actually goes more into the manga storyline, abeit with a few changes (some for better, some for worse...like messing with character designs) I do like the older one as well though and would love to actually own it.

As for titles that should be eternally available, i feel eva should (and probably will be) one of those titles that won't dissappear in a hurry. Same with Ghost in the Shell.

Let's see what else...

Full Metal Panic
Excel Saga (just to show what a comedy show is like if they went completely random)
A Gundam show apart from SEED/ SEED Destiny (wouldn't know which one to put forward but as long as there is a gundam show I'll be happy)

I can't think of any others that haven't been said already, will have to think more.

yeah those need to be in too bepops a timeless classic with out a doubt

TV (chronologic order):
Instant History (first TV anime)
Tetsuwan Atom (Tezuka)
Tetsujin 28 (first mecha, bishounen)
Mahou Tsukai Sally (first shoujo and mahou shoujo)
Moomin (World Masterpiece Theatre)
Sazae-san (it's still going, the most watched anime Japan side)
Doraemon
Mobile Suit Gundam (0079) (first real robot, Gundam)
Urusei Yatsura (first tsundere, moe)
Macross (huge, Itano Circus)
Eva (huge, tons of influence (new moe))

Barely know anything about anime films, hard to filter out the tie-ins to find what actualy was important
Obvious are:
GitS
Akira
The Wings of Honneamise
Nausicaa
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro

OVA:
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
(Cream Lemon & Lolita Anime) Omited for obvious reasons

Sadly all of Shimokawa's films have been lost :(
What's the first colour anime, first OVA and what used CG first?

I would also add Go Nagai's Mazinger Z to that list Reaper, as it was pretty much the foundation for the Super Robot genre, more so then Tetsujin 28

I'd personally pick the original Ghost in the Shell film rather than Stand Alone Complex, but both are good.

Most have been mentioned already. All the big classics anyway. I think Dragonball Z, Pokémon and Naruto all deserve a place for being successful mainstream anime that actually got to air on TV. Oh and Digimon.

I'd like to add Death Note, but while it has wide appeal and relatively good critical reception I'm still not sure it counts as a classic, love it though I do.

First anime in colour? First OVA?

The first oav is generally considered to be the 1983 sci-fi story Dallos (sadly not about oil), but I think there may be some dispute over that. I've seen the first episode and it's okay, but I don't think anyone would really be all that interested in it if it weren't directed by Mamoru Oshii. Megazone 23 is the first one that was a real commercial success.

As for colour, apparently it's Toei's 1958 film The Tale of the White Serpent, but I had to look that one up. Intriguingly, China actually beat Japan to the punch on that one; they had a colour short released two years before.

Personally though, I think the 2 Daicon films should always be preserved.

lets think this though Absolutely essential anime titles
