200 pounds, amazon.co.uk shopping spree

...or "what's the best anime (some) money can buy?"

Restrictions: No Studio Ghibli movies (actually, no movies at all, just series please), no Code Geass, no Eden of the East, no Cowboy Bebop, no Ghost in the Shell, Gurren Lagann, Steins Gate, Durarara (I own all these). No US imports either.

My current list is:

Toradora (£37) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KGV5NMI

Nadia Secret of the Blue Water (£55) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nadia-Secret-Co ... 00UBYP46A/

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Complete Series (£27) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Puella-Madoka-C ... B008MJRO6O

High School Of The Dead (£12) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/High-School-Dea ... 00BFDXYYU/

FMA Brotherhood Collection 1 (£33) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fullmetal-Alche ... 00CHOFCVO/

FMA Brotherhood Collection 2 (£33) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fullmetal-Alche ... 00DC3OOOK/

Total: 197 pounds.

Anything better I missed? Thanks a lot!

Does it have to be Amazon? It's just you can buy most of those series cheaper elsewhere.

I won't comment on the quality (except FMA Brotherhood is a must) as it's all subjective.

Try shopping around a little. Amazon isn't always the cheapest. For example, Madoka is only £23 over at base.com and I'm sure the others are cheaper elsewhere too.

IncendiaryLemon: I live in BUcharest, Romania, and most other British online shops charge extra for shipping (I just made an experiment with Zavvi as they had Up On Poppy Hill in Double Play, unlike Amazon).

Buzz: so what if they're subjective? :) I'll look up reviews after I round up all the suggestions :)

Wait for Nadia to drop in price, £55 is quite a lot for it. It should drop to around £40-45 soon, it's only £55 now as it's just been released.

Be worth looking on ebay every so often, i'm sure there's a couple of buy it nows for Toradora & FMA Brotherhood that was cheaper than amazon.

If you aren't limited to amazon then I also recommend shopping around.

http://www.best-bluray-price.co.uk/ is a good place to start if you are looking for the cheapest place for a particular Blu-Ray (It's what I start with when picking up UK releases).

Also I don't know how well it would work out price wise but the FMA:B collections were pretty much a disappointment for me - being just repackaged disks from the separate parts 1-5... If I were buying it from scratch I'd probably go for the 5 parts rather than the 2 collections (more art that way etc).

If I didn't have it KLK would probably be on my list but getting all 3 parts will probably eat a chunk of your budget.

Amazon can be a pain for anime, they usually have decent pre-order prices (especially if you get in early) but once something is released it's often a bit more expensive and can vary wildly.

Still, I guess those prices aren't terrible. Toradora is 25 episodes, Nadia is 39 and so on, you're at least getting a bit of content (11-13 episode shows or parts often go for around £20-£25 and sometimes higher). I don't think the FMA: Brotherhood collection prices have been that much better before.

I think quite a lot of anime prices are "up" just now so it might be worth waiting for a while. Still, if you want stuff as soon as possible you could probably do worse. I usually keep a note of the lowest price I've seen something and then see how it changes, if it goes low enough for me then I'll buy it or if it doesn't go down then I'll think about raising my limit if I really want the show. I guess only you can judge what the right price for you is.

I'm not sure what I'd suggest shows wise. The Devil is a Part-Timer is a good show but it's a bit more expensive than usual just now. The first half of Accel World and Fate/Zero are a bit cheaper just now than most but the second halves are a bit more (though that might be common with two part shows). DVD wise, Ouran High School Host Club is a great show and it's usually cheap (as in, less than £10 for the whole series). That said, I'm not sure how people would rate the video quality (I'm not the best judge of that kind of thing). Obviously, your tastes may vary.

Or was the point of the thread more of a "if you had £200 to spend on anime on Amazon right now, what would you get?". That could be a tough one, I'd probably be thinking pre-orders though (if it's allowed). Space Dandy Season 2 Collector's Edition is £44.99 just now, it probably won't be better for a while (if ever). Still, Anime Limited releases often seem to go to better prices (especially standard editions) at random times so you never know.

Those Amazon prices make me wince. In any case, if you are happy to pay what Amazon are asking then I'd say you've picked an excellent selection of anime to build up your collection with. Sure, I could recommend several other series but I think you will be very happy with what you already have listed. Go for it! :thumb:

If I had 200 to spend, I would buy the monogatari series stuff I haven't got yet (£140), cowboy bebop and gurren laggan standard eds. I am waiting on the UBW blu rays as well as the baccano blu rays for the end of this year so monogatari may have to hold on for a bit (although the more I wait the more the price goes up as more monogatari comes out).

Wow, great site. Now I no longer have to go around checking Amazon, Zavvi and Base individually. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, if only they did the mvm shop, up1, amazon international, webuy (cex), dvdexpress247 I'd be very very happy (I actually emailed their contact info requesting these were added but never got a reply...)

It's that site + keepa.com that are my main tools (I use keepa to compare amazon international prices - primarily for US releases)...

I have been in contact with keepa who have said they plan to expose their "Compare prices at different amazon locales" tool via their API in a few months... If they do, and if I've got some time on my hands I may try putting together something myself that aids this process...

I like Highschool of the Dead a fair bit, but it's definitely the hilariously bad outlier in amongst the others there that I would consider definite or borderline classics. I would spend the £12 on popcorn instead. :p

Cool! What do you think are the "definitive classics" available on amazon.co.uk right now, in R2 bluray editions?

Other series I'm considering:
- Another Collection
- Attack on Titan
- From the New World
- Knights of Sidonia
- Psycho-Pass

Thanks!

Attack on Titan and Psycho-Pass definitely are.

From the New World is on my 'To Get' list as well.

Other than those mentioned, I also enjoyed Gargantia, and of course Space Dandy is a riot!

What I meant was that all the other shows you mentioned are in some way classics. I don't keep up with UK releases too much so I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Of the other shows you mentioned, Shin Sekai Yori/From the New World, and Psycho-Pass are both 10/10 shows for me.

Drop High School of the Dead and spend a few quid more and get this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spice-Wolf-Comp ... e+and+wolf

Awesome show if you like drama/character inter-play. The collection has S1 and 2. UK DVDs are also available around the same price, but this complete US collection gets you DVD and BD, and a multiregion player will cover any region issues :)

If you have a PC, Leawo Bluray Player will play most discs of most regions, although you have to set the region manually for some :)
