2 Shows on NHK World Right Now Worth Watching

If you've got Sky or Freesat, then you need to tune into NHK World today.

Imagine-Nation is a 50 minute special on the 2012 LA Anime Expo just past, and they're some nice previews and interviews therein, better if you have HD too. THere's a look at Total Eclipse, PES and Madoka Magica, and there are interviews with Yuki Kajiura and more. There's also segments on Crunchyroll and Viz Media.

Also on is a two part L'Arc En Ciel Concert Documentary following their show in New York. Part 1 is on today, and Part 2 tomorrow. Both 50 minutes.

They are repeated through the day, so find one you have time to watch or PVR it.

Just looked over my channels list on sky and all I have is NHK HD, which is a problem as im not subscribed to HD Tv and they have no regular version judging from their homewebsite channel finder.

I generally watch Imagin-nation every week and its usually very enjoyable and they even had mamoru hosoda as a guest this week so it was awesome.

Both NHK HD and SD are free to air, so you should be able to find it off the EPG. Try tuning it in on Sky anyway.

On Freesat, it automatically shows you SD or HD depending on your receiver.

Crap! It went HD only last September, and I never noticed. Oops. But if you have an HD box, it should be free to air...

Try tuning it in directly...

Eutelsat 28A 11223V 27500 2/3

They do stream the channel online, but some shows aren't streamed

HD is free but only if you have an HD box. SD you need to subscribe, or at least you do if you have an SD Sky box. [why? HD boxes are free now]. watched L'arc Part 1 last night. Just happened accross it, Nice gig, but I kept subconsciencely seeing Hatsune Miku singing at MSG as well. Seriously hardcore addict. My ears are all bruised in torquois, pink, and yellow. Also why does the lead singer for L'arc wear a wig in mini platts on stage, but has a regular cut off stage? That's just freaky.

I also couldn't help but think he sounds like Anis, lead singer of Monoral. [think opening of Ergo Proxy]

So you have to have sky to get it?

You need a satellite dish pointed at the same satellites as a Sky dish (a sky dish will work too) You need a TV, and you need a Freesat reciever. It's a different EPG than Sky's, and you only pay for the box.

Here's the website

You get 5 HD Channels (+24 for the Olympics) and about a hundred others.

The moment it was announced, Sky introduced Freesat from Sky to confuse OAPs and to charge for the card that unlocks the FTV channels.

Freesat will only show FTA channels (no card needed), there's also a non-Freesat mode as part of the standard, that lets you pick up all the other FTA channels with basic now-next information (no EPG), so you can get all the God channels, Slapper Channels, Foreign language channels as well.

I watch Imagine-nation every week, a very interesting show with interesting guests. The Anime Expo special was really good.

NHK World has lots on interesting shows, and Your Japanese Kitchen and Itakdakimasu are absolute must sees for me.

So it is worth the trouble then? Sounds awesome.

I got a Panasonic TV with Freesat HD built in last year, stuck a dish on the front of the building, and looked forward to channels upon channels of Free stuff.

Then my family discovered all the Free to air Indian channels and recently more and more of them are ditching the subscription model and going Free to air. They've got 20 Hindi and Panjabi Channels lined up on a favorites list in non-Freesat mode. They don't even watch the Freesat.

Except this week, they're glued to the Olympics channels, torch relay for the last two days, and now they're watching sports.

I'm still stuck watching Freeview on my old CRT set in the other room...

But (I did get a smart TV, and I;ve hooked it up wirelessly to the router) Late night, when I get a look in on the Panasonic, I can stream free anime from Funimation on Youtube. (And I got IPlayer). Can't wait until Crunchyroll start getting their aps on smart TVs. But I digress.

But yeah, NHK World is the best looking free HD channel being broadcast, blows BBC HD, Ch 4 and ITV out of the water.
