Rate the Last Anime You Watched Out of 10

After another long hiatus from Anime I'm back. Lovely to still see some of the same faces and I hope everyone is well.

Cybernetics Guardian 7/10
Funnily enough id rated this bad on ANN originally but i was in the mood for some old school anime and it scratched the itch. It’s probably not that great, but I did have fun. I think rating old school stuff is different to newer stuff. It’s so different now.

Chainsaw Man 8.5/10
After the first few episodes I just thought it was ripping off Devil Man and I’m a huge fan of the 87/90 OVA’s and Manga UK’s sweary dub 😂 but after looking online and finding the creator was massively inspired by it I let it slide and then it went in its own direction and I absolutely loved it. Cant wait for more.

Demon Slayer S1 7/10
I really have mixed feelings on this series, I like the first few episodes but then I thought it was kind of average and i nearly dropped it twice. That was until the main battle of the series, which I thought was excellent but then the last few eps were back to average. I do like Tanjiro and his determination to help his sister and the fight scenes are pretty cool. My wife liked it, so I’m probably gonna watch more. The good thing is it’s quite easy watching so even after work when I’m tired I’ll still be able to watch it.

Knowing me, I’ll probably burn out again soon, but whilst I’m enjoying it, I’m gonna keep going 😁

Made In Abyss S1 - 6/10
Im not really sure what to say about this, it just didnt click with me. I honestly nearly stopped watching it after around 5 eps but i kept plodding on and it just never really grabbed me. My wife didn't like it and my son said he did but wasn't bothered about season 2. So ill probably leave it there.

Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc (series version) - 9/10
This really surprised me as i didn't think season 1 was all that great but boy did i enjoy this. Id read somewhere that no one dies, so you can imagine my surprise come the end and Kyojuro bites the dust. I was shell shocked and it hit me right in the feels. Thoroughly enjoyable movie/series. Im unsure whether a rewatch would have the same impact but it worked the first time around.

Demon Slayer Entertainment District Arc - 8/10
I do like when shows/seasons are around the 12 episode mark, this one being 11. I like the quicker place and lack of overlay drawn out moments and this fit the bill. Some of the action scenes were so well animated i was blown away. I thought they’d killed off my fave character Inosuke at one point. I was not impressed but this is my one complaint about this arc. They faked too many character deaths and i think that always cheapens it and removes any stakes cox you know if they can survive these wounds they can probably survive anything. All in all i think this show has massively improved since season 1, really glad my wife liked it or i might not have got this far. Not bad to say shes not really into anime 😁

Chainsaw Man Movie - Reze Arc 5/10
Well i think this could be controversial. I thought I was really going to like it but i feel very disappointed. Firstly the change in character designs really threw me, its something I hate to see them do. I wouldnt say I’ve got OCD but it does really irritate me, I like continuity. I also felt they were a massive downgrade, even if they look more like the Manga, I feel its irrelevant as they've gone with the character designs in season 1. The animation style also seemed different too but it also seem to change in the movie itself, the big fight scene when Reze first turns on Denji seemed very different to the big one later on as well. I also found the opening 30-40mins painfully slow and dull. I know they are setting things up but i’ve seen the same thing in other anime and not felt that way.

On a positive note the animation at times was great, even after the big fight with the final scenes of the film I thought that looked much better and the cut away drawings were great again. I don't know man, i’m a bit shocked that this has such a high rating and that I didn't even like it. I thought season 1 was so much better in every way and i really hope season 2 is like S1 rather than the movie. Ah well onto the next anime 😂

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG - 10/10

So often in anime do I find follow up seasons lacklustre, GiTS: SaC 2nd Gig is not in this camp. I think the episodes that break out from the Individual 11 season arc are stronger and better character studies than S1. Episode 10 One Angry Man (the trial episode for those who watched this a long time ago) initially left me furious but after that settled it felt genius, a brilliant way to show us not only how strong Togusa's conviction is but how corrupt the establishment can be (subtly feeding into the wider plot) and also the lengths S9 are willing to go to protect their ideal version of the world, much like all the other protagonist and antagonist forces littered throughout SaC. I'm sure this series has been debated to death so I won't linger much longer but the Ghost-less (or are they?) Tachikoma once again saving the day of their own initiative was for me a masterful poetic highlight asking the audience the question "where is the line between real and fake life?"

PS. Haven't watched Solid State Society yet and do not plan to go onto SAC_2045

I assume you won't be watching GitS Arise then, either?
Actually I have it on my CR watchlist, probably going to watch something else as a break but will try and watch it before the new iteration starts (July?). The all CGI look for 2045 is not appealing and I watched SAC dubbed which means I would have to get Netflix again to keep that up.

It helps that Arise only 12 episodes and a movie so easy to plow through.

My 2 that I like to rewatch are
Poker Face
The sniper is my favourite. Wee bit of politics.

Red Data
All alone in Taiwan and an off the books personal mission.

I'll have to rewatch both seasons in full some time.

Arise is watchable enough, it’s just very forgettable and suffers the unenviable task of following on from SAC

My own favourite episode for the 2nd Gig is still Make Up, I think Paz provides a very different protagonist for the series from either Kusanagi or Batou and his episode has a more traditional hard-boiled detective story feel to it. The one that sticks in my mind most though is Night Cruise; it doesn’t feel like they’ve simply copied the story of Taxi Driver as much as they’ve done a cheeky reimagining of it, riffing on the much debated extent of Travis Bickle’s fantasies.
