Are there any anime you dropped because you found the characters so unlikable?

Hikikomori
I was just giving I'm Standing on a Million Lives another go(I had only watched the first episode a while back) and the glasses girl, Yuka, really rubbed me the wrong way.

Yatsuya, the mc saved her from being stripped and photographed by a bunch of psychotic bullies in the ladies room and she repaid him by trying to appease said bullies by claiming he was a pervert who was in there to set up a camera. And worse still, she tells one of their group, Shindo what she'd done and Shindo isn't the least bit bothered by it despite having tearfully begged Yatsuya for his help not two episodes ago.

That, and the way the girls generally treat Yatsuya like crap for no reason put a real bad taste in my mouth. I dropped the show while I was halfway through the next episode.

I totally get it! Those characters can be really frustrating. Yuka's behavior is so off, and Yatsuya just keeps getting into trouble. I don’t blame you for losing patience. Sometimes it’s best to just step away from shows that start getting on your nerves.

Christopher :)

I did drop in another world with a smartphone but I recently watched it for the lols.

Was funny but the story was quite garbage.

There are a couple!

I really dislike it if characters are inconsiderate of each other and I tend to be very empathetic, so I have a hard time with some types of comedy, like The irresponsible captain Tyler, where the comedy stems from the main character being self centered and dense and causing trouble for everyone around them. I couldn't really finish that series (yet). Pity, because I love the style!

Log Horizon: I liked the setup, but man, did Naotsugu's perverseness sour this experience quickly. I don't mind fan service perse, but as said before I hate inconsiderate people, especially if its brushed off as innocent comedy while its actually really creepy (even extra considering one of the main characters looks like a underage girl). Scenes that would have been epic or moving actually get interrupted by this 'comedy'. I want to kick that guy in the face.

Attack on Titan: This one I stopped because Eren got on my nerves more and more; hot headed, not listening at all or open to new information. Now I've been spoiled a bit since I stopped watching and understand now that have might been the point, so I'll probably continue watching this^^.

Clamp's Tsubasa-I've had both seasons for years and have made a couple of good faith efforts to watch S1 but I never make it through due to how bland and uninteresting the show is. The furthest I've made it is to ep.5. I have no such problems with Magic Knight Rayearth or Cardcaptor Sakura both of which I've watched a couple of times.

I am 6 episodes into Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works and Shirou Emiya is really annoying, he's such a doormat that it is tempting to drop the anime. I really wish Rin was the protagonist instead.

There are probably others but two come to mind that stand out:
  • Toradora - I found Taiga to be an insufferable brat.
  • Death Note - I can't stand L.

I know I should give it another go but Love Chunibyo and other Delusions

Yuta was just being a ---- to Rikka, it wasn't funny, just a ----. So I ended up dropping the show after less than 2 episodes.

It was a few years ago and its a KyoAni so its on my rewatch pile when I get back into Anime

Also not a drop but... I tried to get into Macross plus with the understanding its a masterpiece, but I hated both male main characters. They where both so cocky, hotheaded and immature. The romance felt more like possessiveness.

(This question is interesting to think about, because I feel I get to know myself a bit better:).)

I also do not like Macross Plus, but it has been so long since I saw it, I do not really remember why other than I know in general I did not find the characters appealing compared to the original SDF Macross. I believe there were other reasons though. I also thought, even at the time, that the use of CG was awful.

Edit: One more, how could I forget Mushoku Tensei, which I dropped part way through the second episode. Rudeus has to be the most repulsive MC in any anime I've ever seen.

I'm curious what I would think of Macross Plus on a rewatch, knowing what I'm getting into.

Oh cool are you a fan of SDF Macross and/or the DYRL movie? I know you don't like dubs but I do love the uncut ADV English dub version of the TV series (aka the one that's not Robotech), it made it one of my fave anime I got really into it and I've watched the whole show at least 2-3 times now. I acknowledge the animation quality is, uh, variable, and that might put some people off but I really enjoyed it and am keen to rewatch it again at some point in the next couple of years :)

To keep this thread on topic, I'm trying to think what anime I dropped due to not liking one or more of the principal cast members...

I did watch all of Death Note but didn't like Light (not trying to start a fight that's just my opinion), I have been put off a fair few modern isekai by some of the male MCs being... makes the face the fairies make in Soul Eater when Excalibur is mentioned... even tho I loved Excalibur and found him hilarious Not all of them just some of them, and I actually like some well enough that are divisive like Subaru from Re:Zero (he's not my fave MC ever or anything but he def doesn't make me wanna drop the series).

I can see why some of the other characters and series here have been mentioned:

Taiga is far too angry and violent for me to really love her as a character, I still enjoyed Toradora and I did appreciate that they did try to make her and some of the other characters a bit more complex than just them being super nice great people all the time (even though I tend to respond well to super nice great people lol)... but when she gives Ryuji a threatening look about halfway through just for finding another girl attractive or having some sort of possibly sexual thought all I could think was "if I had a boyfriend who treated me the way she is treating him, I would dump his scary jealous ass" so yes she at least can sometimes be an absolutely terrible person and she's def one of those characters that only even half "works" in a cartoon as if it were a live-action show she would be a domestic abuser.

I didn't really care for Macross Plus, even though it's the kind of thing that on paper would be right up my alley - I didn't exactly drop it, but I've never actually finished it.

Didn't mind S1 of Love Chuunibyo but it's not one of KyoAni's best for sure.

I can see why Irresponsible Captain Tylor would be divisive but I find the show great fun and the character mostly endearing and cute.

I like Shirou Emiya, I appreciate his kindness and sincerity, based on having watched many of the Ufotable Fate entries (Zero, Unlimited Blade Works and the Heaven's Feel films), I think he's a nice young man.

I get why the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle anime would appeal less to someone than MKR or CCS, there is something about the pacing that is just so slooooowwww.

I didn't finish Attack on Titan but that wasn't especially due to Eren.

If only Shirou Emiya was just kind and sincere I would agree with you, however he repeatedly does dumb things that puts his own life and those around him in danger.

Like he repeatedly goes places without Saber, gets himself into danger leading to injuries and people getting themselves into danger to save him.

Also still only 6 episodes in, he discovers who has been draining the life force of innocent people around and despite the fact that the guy in question has been acting like scum from the very first episode and is now stated to be harming people to drain them he just lets him get away and agrees to not tell Rin or the others about his identity.

Primarily the movie for me, but the only way I've ever seen the series is as Robotech so I can't truly judge it on its own merits.

Yeah, the animation quality is all over the place; I read somewhere long ago that it was a troubled production. What always got me with that is Millia's wedding episode. You'd think they would have taken whatever steps necessary to make her look beautifiul for her wedding, but no, it's one of the terrible looking episodes. :(

Original Macross is cursed. There's the whole thing where it's been basically unavailable because of Harmony Gold. The series has the animation quality issues. DYRL is beautiful, but suffers from mistakes in how the cels were photographed so much of it is out of focus. This wasn't obvious on laserdisc or DVD, but became so on blu-ray, and Bandai has done less than ideal things to try to fix it. The current blu-ray and 4K UHD aren't terrible, but some kind of AI was used and there are some typical issues from that. Still, it's the only English subtitled version of the film available, so I cherish it.

I'll watch any Macross series from Zero on but the earlier Macross series I won't touch with a 10' pole-space operas make me feel sick to my stomach if I try to watch them. I'm really big into Frontier and Delta but Frontier is favorite by far as you might guess from my avatar.
As far as Fate/Zero and Fate/Unlimited Blade Works are concerned all I can say is WOW. As you might guess I loved them both along with the 2 movies that followed.
