[Overseas] Anime News & Announcements

Beginning of 2026 is also when Crunchyroll completely ended their free-with-ads service. Maybe the timing is a coincidence but it's starting to really look like the only thing they're interested in is their paid streaming service.
It's a sorry state of affairs, but it's increasingly clear that any enthusiasm for anime as anything but content to keep subscriptions active has long since been wrung out of Crunchyroll and the companies they gobbled up. That they kept Funimation's physical release pipeline going this long feels more like a half-hearted experiment than a project with any passion behind it. Occasionally you'll see a release here or there that bucks the tedious power-fantasy trend and feels like it's been championed by someone who cares, but the last one I can think of is A Sign of Affection, which was about a year ago.

Has anybody besides me noticed that crappyroll's streaming subtitling has gone back to the way it was before the huge controversy a few months ago? The signs, cell phone text, floating comments etc. are all done in color matching typesetting. It looks like they've gone back to using Aegisub after the massive amounts of complaints from streaming subscribers.

I've given up on Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts getting a home release.

That's over two years old now so it's very unlikely. Even when they were still releasing a lot more things on blu-ray, after something was that old it seldom got picked up.

The list of things I want that will never get released is so long I can't even remember all of it but a few are, in no particular order aside from #1:
  • Sound! Euphonium Seasons 2 & 3
  • Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire
  • Tsukimichi
  • Raven of the Inner Palace
  • The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
  • Don`t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
  • My Happy Marriage
  • Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki-kun Season 2
  • Gridman Universe (movie)

The state of things when this stuff can't even get standard releases.

Sacrificial Princess, Raven of the Inner Palace, and My Happy Marriage are HUGE anime titles for me, making me so upset they never got Blu-ray releases. Heck, I would buy Ultimate Edition releases for all three! I at least made sure I have fansubs saved on multiple hard drives for those titles. Everything else on that list are also big wants for me, except the last two titles, which I'm not really into.

Oh, and don't forget We Rent Tsukumogami, which AL let their license expire for without ever releasing it. I'll never forgive them for that.

Hmm, no Steelbooks from Sentai for May. I was getting used to having at least one Steelbook of interest each month. I do still have three Sentai steelbooks on pre-order yet for March and April, so I can at least look forward to getting those.

Maoyu is actually a re-rerelease (i.e. the third version Sentai has done). 😄

From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated! for me. I'd get Maoyu but already have the version from 2021.
