Overseas The Discotek Media Thread (plus AnimEigo)

I already have the Gunbuster OVA Blu-ray from Discotek and the Collector's Edition set from Anime Limited, but since this was announced I also ordered a copy of the Sentai Gunbuster The Movie release this morning just for completion's sake, before that goes OOP too. So I should be good for now. Just need Diebuster yet.

I have the Anime Limited standard edition, but always end up feeling like I should have a spare copy for things like this in case I have an accident and damage the disc or something happens to it.

I do have the Bandai US blu-ray of the movie version too, but as that is edited and shortened it has always seemed like an inferior version.

With this going OOP seemingly fairly quickly, I wonder if it's some kind of licensing issue, and if so, Diebuster might be affected as well.

Here's a list of Discotek Blu-ray/4K releases that are currently not available on the Crunchyroll Store i.e. the listing was removed.

City Hunter 2
It's encouraging to see that Discotek's licence for City Hunter doesn't appear to be about to expire, especially with season 2 set 2 having been OOP for some time. That said, I'm in two minds about how much City Hunter I need on my shelf. I love season 1 (rewatching it at the moment, in fact, and it's still a 9/10 show for me), but 51 episodes kind of feels like enough when it's the same formula for each episode. Do later seasons switch things up at all, or improve on season 1 in any way?

Season 2, is a very different set up, as I don't want to spoil it, there isn't much I can add, except Kaorii has a bigger role in the season, she adds à comedic twist to the series as she tries to curb Ryo's mokkuri

I don't like that fact. My favorite episodes of City Hunter are the very first ones, before she shows up and the series is somewhat more serious. I don't mind the 100t hammers, as long as it's not overdone, and as the series goes on and especially in City Hunter 2, it's waaaaayyyy overdone for me.

As far as this rerelease goes, while I'm happy it's available again for anyone who missed it, I'm in the pissed-off category. I prefer single sets per series when available, so I re-bought the first season when it was rereleased as a single set. Then I waited a very long time before buying City Hunter 2 because I wanted it in the same format. Finally I got the two parts when Right Stuf had their final sale before they closed because a spokesperson for Discotek insisted it would never be rereleased as a single set saying that was a failed experiment with the first season.

Surprise news from Discotek Media. Project A-Ko is coming to 4K Ultra HD with HDR and will also include the three OVA sequels presented in 1080p SDR on the same disc. So pretty much its all here (outside of the ones they don't have the license to).

Basically no need to grab the old four individual Discotek sets and Anime Limited's recent Blu-ray release of the first one unless you don't have a 4K player (or PS5/Series X) at this point. 4K is all-region as well.

Glad I haven't picked up the sequels yet, this'll definitely save on space as well. I may sell off my AL CE though I'm yet to watch it so depending how much I enjoy it I may keep the CE along with this upcoming release.

I will stick with AL for part 1 and Discotek's blu-ray for part 2 unless AL ever releases that one too. I don't like the other sequels enough to own them. I don't buy anything on UHD unless there is no other option, like remasters that only exist in that format. I only have 1080P displays and do not intend to replace them because I want the panel resolution to match that of the majority of my media; I've never seen 1080P on a 4K display that looks acceptable to me.

Edit: Forgot to add I really dislike the revisionist nature of how HDR is implemented on far too many anime UHD discs.

I thought Discoteks 4K discs were region locked
